The primary context is the Predominately White Institution and the terms African American and Black are used interchangeably. We discuss the silencing of this group of women while privileging others. To date, little has been written on this topic. Much less has been written about the African American females’ struggles in silence, both personally and professionally (Collins, 1986). We end by putting forth strategies that African American women might consider as they soar in leadership roles.

Many freshmen students are coming to college underprepared and in need of developmental education. The role of student services is to assist these students and their families with this important transition to postsecondary education by offering specialized services such as new student orientation programs and welcome week activities, and establishing First Year Offices. This article also explains the role of the Center for Access and Transition which was established by the University of Cincinnati to provide services to students who do not meet the criteria for direct admission to the baccalaureate program.

This initial CAHEP Directory of Higher Education Programs was a spiral bound paper directory that is now provided electronically by CAHEP. Secondly, though not mentioned in its title, the CAHEP directory was, for the most part, limited to higher education programs in the United States. This limited perspective identified just only over 200 higher education administration, management, and leadership programs, including general higher education administration programs, student affairs programs, and related other higher education programs with various other higher education concentrations. This is now compared to what are over 450 higher education programs that have been identified by authors Rumbley, Altbach, Stanfield, Shimmi, Gayardon, and Chan (2014), worldwide. Also, while the intent was to use the initial CAHEP directory as a resource for higher education program directors and researchers, Rumbley et al.'s 2014 Worldwide Inventory provides much more; not only in terms of the inventory's higher education academic program, research center, professional organization, journal and periodical publication listings along with contact information, location, focus areas, and number of faculty, researchers, or professional staff, but also a substantive analysis of the existing landscape of higher education as a field of study, policy analysis, and research globally. Examples include a history and current trends in the field of higher education, the positioning of the field of higher education around the globe, with a particular focus on its steady growth and prominence in China, followed by growth in the United Kingdom, Africa, Japan, and Latin America, and a focus on the importance of increased understanding of the critical role that higher education plays in the economic and social development of countries around the word.

The impact of economic recession on higher education enrollment was examined using seasonally adjusted data from the U.S. Census and the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, Unemployment Level-Civilian Labor Force. One-way analysis of variance, factorial Anova, and t-tests revealed that overall enrollments during recession years were not statistically different. Rather, higher education enrollments registered a steady rise over the four decades. However, enrollments differed by gender and ethnicity. In fact, powerful linkages were found to exist between gender and enrollment, and ethnicity and enrollment to recessions and unemployment and undergraduate enrollment. In sum, the study results indicated that recessions between 1970 and 2009 had very little restraining power on U.S. higher education enrollments.
