Taking into consideration that obesity is a risk factor for chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer, which are an increasing public health concern, the search and use of dietary agents for the prevention and management of obesity would be of tremendous benefit. Recently, natural bioactive phytochemicals present in foods have been found to provide health benefits and have effects on the prevention of several chronic non-communicable diseases including obesity. Naturally-occurring bioactive compounds present in teas, spices, cocoa and coffee, such as catechins, capsaicinoids, capsinoids, ginerols, and methylxanthines have been shown to modulate physiological and molecular pathways that are involved in energy metabolism, adiposity, and obesity. These compounds play an important role in weight control by decreasing appetit...

Material and methods: Participants (13-19 years old, n = 14,044 students) were recruited from 207 schools, randomly selected from a total of 2058 schools. The stratified two-stage sampling method was used. First the schools were selected, and then the students. The study was conducted from 2013 to 2014. The body weight of students aged 13-18 years was assessed using IOTF criteria. For students aged 19 years old, standard WHO body mass index criteria were applied. Results: Excessive body weight was observed among 18.2% of all adolescents aged 13-19 years old, 11.6% were found to be overweight, and 6.6% obese. The prevalence of overweight ranged between 9.3% and 11.5% for girls, and 9.4% and 17.0% for boys. The prevalence of obesity ranged between 3.8% and 7.3% for girls, and 4.8% and 9.2% for boys. The obesity rate was higher among younger individuals for both gender groups, and a decreasing prevalence with age was observed. Conclusions: In Poland overweight was observed in one out of every eight adolescents, and obesity in one out of every 15 adolescents. The weight status was dependent on age and gender of adolescents. The highest prevalence of obesity was noted for the youngest boys (13 years old).

However, compliance with such a diet has an impact on the quality of life of individuals with CD, and, possibly, on their nutritional status. The aim of the study was to assess the dietary intake of female coeliacs and to determine if they are meeting the current dietary reference values. Volunteers were recruited through advertisements placed in coeliac disease support groups, and from the Section of Dietary Counseling at the Department of Dietetics at WUL-S. Forty-two volunteers met all criteria for participation and completed the 3-day food records. The following parameters were evaluated: body height, weight, mass index, and fat and muscle masses (bioimpedance-BIA, Akern). The total daily energy and selected nutrients intake were calculated using Dietetyk 1 software, and the obtained values were compared to current recommendations. The results showed an inadequate intake of complex carbohydrates, fibre, calcium, potassium and iron, and high consumption of fat, sugar, and phosphorus. Although most of the individuals (79%) had normal weight, the BIA results showed excessive amount of fat tissue. Female CD patients are at risk of having an unbalanced diet; therefore, the nutritional therapy for CD patients cannot be focused only on the avoidance of gluten on a GFD. Emphasis should be on the nutrients contents of a gluten-free foods, especially fat, sugar, fibre, calcium, potassium, and iron.

A long period of development, high colorectal carcinoma-related mortality as well as significant social and economic costs due to this condition are prerequisites for seeking efficient methods of cancer prevention, including nutritional approach. A number of bioactive components of food is extensively tested for antitumor activity, however limited number of reliable studies on humans impedes the formulation of unequivocal nutritional recommendations. Plant products represent a rich source of numerous phytochemicals endowed with anticancer potential due to, first of all, their free radical scavenger activity. The purpose of this paper was to present the relationship between consumption of selected foods reach in numero...

Although clinically significant interactions between l-T4 and food can alter the safety and efficacy of the treatment, they still seem to be generally underestimated by patients, physicians and pharmacists. This review aimed to investigate the effects of meals, beverages, and dietary supplements consumption on l-T4 pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, to identify the most evident interactions, and to perform the recommendations for safe co-administering of l-T4 and food. A total of 121 studies were identified following a systematic literature search adhering to PRISMA guidelines. After full-text evaluation, 63 studies were included. The results proved that l-T4 ingestion in the morning and at bedtime are equally effective, and also that the co-administration of l-T4 with food depends on the drug formulation. We found limited evidence for l-T4 interactions with coffee, soy prod...
