Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) quenched significantly chlorophyll fluorescence when introduced both in intact leaves and isolated chloroplasts. Additionally, the fluorescence spectra corrected for light re-absorption processes showed a net decrease in the fluorescence ratio calculated as the quotient between the maximum fluorescence at 680 and 735 nm. This fact gave evidence for a reduction in the fluorescence emission of the PSII relative to that of the PSI. Strikingly, the photosynthetic parameters derived from the analysis of the slow phase of Kautsky's kinetics, the rate of oxygen evolution and the rate of photo-reduction of 2,6-dichlorophenolindophenol were increased in the presence of AuNPs indicating an apparent greater photosynthetic capacity. The observed results were consistent with an electron transfer process from the excited PSII, which was thermodynamically possible...

UV-Vis absorption, steady state and time-resolved fluorescence measurements were performed for Chl in the presence and absence of these nanoparticles. AgNPs strongly suppressed the Chl fluorescence intensity at 678 nm. The Stern-Volmer constant (KSV) showed that fluorescence suppression is driven by the dynamic quenching process. In particular, KSV was nanoparticle size-dependent with a nearly linear decrease as a function of the nanoparticle diameter. Finally, changes in the Chl fluorescence lifetime in the presence of nanoparticles demonstrated that the fluorescence quenching may be induced by the excited electron transfer from the Chl molecules to the metal nanoparticles.

In order to filling knowledge gaps, in vitro and in vivo assays were performed, using cyanobacterial phycocyanin (C-PC) from Arthrospira platensis and Lemna valdiviana plants (duckweed), respectively. Impairment in light energy transfer became evident in C-PC exposed to CuONPs, giving rise to an increase of light absorption and a suppression of fluorescence emission. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results showed that C-PC structures might be altered by the nanoparticles, also revealed that CuONPs preferably interacts with-NH functional groups. The data also revealed that CuONPs affected the chlorophyll a content in duckweed leaves. In addition, photosystem II (PSII) performance was significantly affected by CuONPs, negatively impacting the PSII photochemical network. In summary, the results point out that, even eco-friendly designed, CuONPs may negatively affect the photosynthetic process when accumulated by aquatic photoautotrophs.

As a result, there is a continuous increase in the production, use and disposal of these materials in the environment. The behaviour and (bio) activity of these materials in the atmosphere, water and soil are not fully studied. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out an analysis of the risks of contamination, as well as the possible effects and impacts of nanoparticles (NPs) on the ecosystem. In an attempt to investigate these effects on plants, the present study aimed to investigate the impact of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) on the seed germination process of Sesbania virgata. For this, the Sesbania virgata seeds were subjected to different concentration of CuO NPs (0, 100, 200, 300 and 400 mgL-1) and their germination and development were monitored by optical analysis (thermography and chlorophyll a fluorescence). The result...

H. glycines eggs were incubated at three temperatures: 25°C, 28°C, and 28°C for three days followed by 25°C up to the end of the trials, and three incubation media: water, 0.01 M zinc sulphate, and three days in water followed by 0.01 M zinc sulphate till the end of the trials. Zinc sulphate stimulated the hatching of H. glycines juveniles (p< 0,05). The effect of temperature was not so clear as that of the incubation media, but in one trial the hatch rate was higher when the hatching chambers were set at 28°C for three days followed by 25°C up to the end of the incubation time.

One day old chicks have not already developed thermoregulation ability; thus, brooding temperature variations may affect pullet quality leading to broiler meat production losses. This research aimed to calculate sensible heat loss in one day old pullets in hatching area and vaccination room. Ten one day old pullets were randomly selected from hatching area of a commercial hatchery. Infrared images were used to calculate bird surface temperature. Exposure areas for the two conditions were quantified, and both air temperature and wind speed was recorded. Total sensible heat loss was calculated as heat loss by radiation plus heat loss by convection. It was found that heat transfer occurs in different ways at different bird body parts. Total heat loss found for hatching baskets was equivalent to 0.81 J s-1 while for vaccination room was 1.16 J s-1. Pullet nutrition is based on energy loss from brooding to farm, and...

Concomitantly, atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels continue to rise, increasing the concentrations of bicarbonate ions in aquatic ecosystems. This study investigates the influence of CeO2 NPs (from 0 to 100 μgL-1) in the presence and absence of an elevated bicarbonate (HCO3-) ion concentration (1 mM), on vibrational biochemical parameters and photosystem II (PSII) activity in leaf discs of Salvinia auriculata. Fourier transform-infrared photoacoustic spectroscopy (FTIR-PAS) was capable of diagnostic use to understand biochemical and metabolic changes in leaves submitted to the CeO2 NPs and also detected interactive responses between CeO2 NPs and HCO3- exposure at the tissue level. The results showed that the higher CeO2 NPs levels in the presence of HCO3- increased the non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) and coefficient of photochemical quenching in dark (qPd) compared to the absence of HCO3. Moreover, the presence of HCO3- significantly decreased the NPQ at all levels of CeO2 NPs demonstrating that HCO3- exposure may change the non-radiative process involved in the operation of the photosynthetic apparatus. Overall, the results of this study are useful for providing baseline information on the interactive effects of CeO2 NPs and elevated HCO3- ion concentration on photosynthetic systems.
