The most important American social conflict of 2012-the Chicago Teachers Union strike-suggests th... more The most important American social conflict of 2012-the Chicago Teachers Union strike-suggests that the rising trajectory of social struggle in the United States that began at the beginning of 2011 may be continuing to ascend. While the United States has a much lower level of class struggle and social struggle than virtually any other industrial nation-few American workers are unionized (only 11.8%) and unionized workers engage in few strikes and those involve a very small numbers of workers-still, the economic crisis and the demand for austerity by both major political parties, Republican and Democrat, has led to increased economic and political activity by labor unions, particularly in the public sector. 2

It deals with textiles and looms, bananas and coffee, oil and coal; it is about the movement of money, factories and equipment, about workers from the United States, Europe, and Latin America, about businessmen and business unionists, about communist, socialist, and anarchist revolutionaries, about government military interventions, arms sales and mercenaries, about death squads and murder. Not surprisingly, given what it attempts to accomplish, it is a complicated book and a challenging one. Aviva Chomsky, Professor of History and coordinator of Latin American Studies at Salem State College in Salem, Massachusetts, discovers, describes, and analyzes in her book Linked Labor Histories: New England, Colombia, and the Making of a Global Working Class the long and complex relationships between New England and Latin America, and among governments, capital, and labor. Examining the history of the textile industry, agriculture, and coal and oil production, she places at the center of her study the responses of corporations and organized labor, as well as the U.S. and foreign governments, to the vicissitudes of the capitalist system. Principally, this book is an attempt to understand this history through the dynamics of capital and labor. She is primarily interested here to understand and Dan La Botz teaches History at the University of Cincinnati and is the author of several books on U.S., Mexican, and Indonesian labor. He is an editor of Mexican Labor News and Analysis (www.ueinter national.org/), and of New Politics: A Journal of Socialist Thought (www.wpunj.edu/*newpol/) as well as a leader of Solidarity (www.solidarity-us.org/), a socialist organization in the United States.

En septiembre pasado unas 8000 personas, de movimientos socials, iglesias, sindicalistas y activi... more En septiembre pasado unas 8000 personas, de movimientos socials, iglesias, sindicalistas y activistas de izquierda, se manifestaron en Pittsburgh para protestar frente a la reunión de los ministros de finanzas del G20. La marcha llegó cerca del décimo aniversario de la famosa Batalla de Seattle, en la que sindicalistas y ecologistas se unieron junto a un amplio espectro de activistas y movimientos sociales para intentar desafíar a la Organización Mundial del Comercio (OMC). La Batalla fue un éxito impresionante, representando una nueva fase en la cooperación entre diversos movimientos, un nuevo nivel de militancia, y sugiriendo que el movimiento estaba en ascenso. Pero dos años después los ataques terroristas del 11 de septiembre de 2001 en el World Trade Center y el Pentágono, y el ataque fallido en el Capitolio, frenaron al movimiento por la justicia global y el activismo decayó rápidamente. Los activistas ecologistas, los sindicalistas, y los miembros de las iglesias que participaron en las batallas callejeras en Seattle volvieron a sus comunidades locales preparados para desafiar a las multinacionales y al gobierno. La Batalla de Seattle de 1999 representó un alzamiento repentino contra la globalización al servicio de las multinacionales, abriendo nuevas esperanzas en la posibilidad de un cambio social progresista. The Marxist View of the Labor Unions: Complex and Critical

Since the world economic crisis of 2008 and governments' increasing demands for austerity in coun... more Since the world economic crisis of 2008 and governments' increasing demands for austerity in countries around the globe, labor unions have failed to provide leadership to the working class. This has led to a debate about the value of unions and their role in social change. Longstanding socialist organizations and emerging nonstate socialist and anarchist groups have begun an important discussion of the nature of the labor unions, the character of their leaderships, and their relationship to employers and the state. Marx and Engels are often referred to or cited as authorities in these debates, though seldom do we have an overview of how they arrived at their complex understanding of labor union structures, leaderships, politics, and behaviors. This essay is meant to contribute to this important discussion by examining Marx's and Engel's involvement in the workers' movement, including with the labor unions, as well as their writings about labor unions, placing them in the broader context of their revolutionary socialist strategy and vision. We trace the development of these ideas from their first involvement with the workers movement in the mid-1840s until the death of both by the 1890s. Finally, we conclude by making a summary of their considered opinion. Marxist socialists have a complicated and critical attitude toward labor unions. 1 The general reasons for this are no doubt obvious to anyone who has thought about them. Labor union leaders generally fight for higher wages, while Marxist socialists struggle to end the wage system. Trade union leaders often see strikes as unfortunate if sometimes necessary struggles that temporarily disrupt the labor union's usual and ongoing partnership with capital. Socialists on the other hand see strikes as essential to maintaining workers' fighting spirit and preparing workers to engage in class war and eventually to carry out a social revolution to overthrow capitalism. Trade union leaders tend to see their unions as the only legitimate vehicle and voice of the working class, while socialists tend to see trade unions as too limited in their scope-excluding as they often do much of the working class, especially ethnic and racial minorities, women, immigrants, domestic and farm workers, the unemployed, and the indigent. Socialists, on the other hand, organize workers not only into unions but also into educational groups, workers parties, social movements, and revolutionary socialist organizations. Unions foresee no alternative workers' organization, while socialists envision the organization of workers into community or industrial councils that would include virtually all workers, broad organizations that would bs_bs_banner
