The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of the "Food Safe Families" clean and separate messages on cross-contamination behaviors of consumers and to determine the impact of external safe food handling cues. Participants (n = 123) were randomly assigned to a control group or to one of two experimental groups (traditional food safety messages or Ad Council public service announcements). Experimental groups were given a defined educational intervention; then all three groups were videotaped preparing a meal with raw chicken or ground beef (inoculated with Lactobacillus casei) and a ready-to-eat fruit salad. About 90% of salads were contaminated and 24% were highly contaminated, although levels were lower for the food safety messages group. Handwashing scores were lower for the control group than for the other groups. Cloth towels were the most contaminated contact surface, and towels were frequently handled by participants. A slight positive impact relative to the level of cross-contamination observed was associated with the use of external cues. Cell phone use was observed in the kitchen and should be studied as a source of cross-contamination. An educational intervention had a small impact on some measures, but most participants in all groups used procedures that resulted in cross-contamination.

Subjects consisted of 12 nonambulatory adults with severe speech impairments associated with cerebral palsy. Four scripted videotaped conversational conditions involving the AAC system user and a typically speaking partner were employed to manipulate the two independent variables. A balanced incomplete block design was used. Following each viewing, subjects completed a questionnaire designed to assess the communicative competence of the AAC system user. Results indicated that neither independent variable had an impact on the subjects' ratings of communicative competence. Findings are compared with those from an earlier investigation, and clinical implications are discussed.

At baseline, 1, 3, and 6 months after stroke, 459 stroke patients were prospectively assessed. We used the Geriatric Depression Scale to determine depressive status. Outcomes were times to achieve independence in BADL (Barthel >95) and independ-ence in at least three IADL. We used the Kaplan-Meier method and time-dependent Cox proportional hazards regression to examine the relationship between depression and stroke recovery. Depressed patients were 0.3 times less likely than nondepressed patients to achieve BADL of >95 and 0.4 times less likely to be independent in three or more IADL. The cumulative percentages for the nondepressed patients to achieve a BADL of >95 at 1, 3, and 6 months after stroke were 47%, 63%, and 72%, and for the depressed patients, they were 19%, 34%, ...

This study characterizes the psychometric properties of the Stroke Impact Scale (SIS) Version 2.0.Methods—Version 2.0 of the SIS is a self-report measure that includes 64 items and assesses 8 domains (strength, hand function, ADL/IADL, mobility, communication, emotion, memory and thinking, and participation). Subjects with mild and moderate strokes completed the SIS at 1 month (n=91), at 3 months (n=80), and at 6 months after stroke (n=69). Twenty-five subjects had a replicate administration of the SIS 1 week after the 3-month or 6-month test. We evaluated internal consistency and test-retest reliability. The validity of the SIS domains was examined by comparing the SIS to existing stroke measures and by comparing differences in SIS scores across Rankin scale levels. The mixed ...

Gift buying represents a significant proportion of purchases in many product classes and is a pervasive retail consumption pattern. Specialty clothing retail sales surpassed the $9 billion figure in 1983. Factors that discriminate status brands for gift purchases can be used to develop market strategies to increase purchases. Strategies are provided for brand managers, fashion marketers, and store buyers to better meet consumer needs and wants in the gift‐buying process.

Specifically, the ratings were compared across messages with relevance, informativeness, and brevity violations, when latency remained constant (i.e., short). The 96 participating sales clerks viewed scripted, videotaped bookstore conversations and completed an attitude questionnaire. Results indicated that the prestored message with repeated words/phrases was rated the highest, followed by the message with excessive information; next was the message with inadequate information, followed by the message with partly relevant information. The findings may be useful to those using utterance-based systems when making message choices during interactions with service providers. Technological implications point to the development of schema/script-based systems and intelligent editing.

This paper introduces an uniformly most powerful (UMP) unbiased test for testing the equality of means for independent samples of count data from two negative binomial populations in the presence of a common dispersion parameter. The size and power of the UMP unbiased test is compared to several other known tests. The proposed methodology is illustrated with an application to real data.
