One of the tools used is the Geographic Information System (GIS), which was used for the analysis and identification of industrial routes from which pollutants potentially harmful to health are derived. These industries are classified according to the pollutants whose emissions and effluents vary according to the economic line of business; they were also classified according to the number of people working in them. To calculate the area susceptible to contamination and the population exposed, the main roads (canals, tributary rivers) affected by these discharges were located. The case study is the José Antonio Alzate dam, one of the most important dams in Mexico, which is going through one of the worst stages in its history due to the excessive amount of toxic waste discharged into the José Antonio Alzate river and some tributaries. In the present paper were identified qualitatively and quantitatively 567 industries whose activities directly affect approximately 2.5% of the population, as well as the polluting routes.

This probabilistic study can be used to provide the relevant authorities with the necessary data to define possible risk scenarios and, at the same time, allow a sustainable territorial planning. Peñón de los Baños is in the borough of Venustiano Carranza. It has a perimeter of 6,180 m (20,275 ft) and an area of 1.59 km 2 (392.9 acres). It is a zone where ponding often occurs during wet season on a yearly basis. However, this problem has not been mitigated despite its recurrence. The purpose of this paper is to show the results of a numerical simulation model, by referencing a collaborative flood risk map made by the community and the academy. From an engineering point of view, efforts were made to make a numerical simulation model that could be used to support flood predictions as per data provided by the population (streets where water is perceived to run and ponding zones). Iber is a two-dimensional mathematical model for the simulation of flows in rivers and estuaries, it is promoted by the Center for Hydrographic Studies of CEDEX, and it was used to get scenarios and to be able to prevent floods. The coincidence of routes (streets where water runs) and flooding zones, as provided by the community, could be contrasted with the results of the numerical model to provide feedback and possible solutions that would mitigate this problem.

Government (G), non-governmental organizations (NGOs), civil society organizations (CSOs) and private enterprises (PEs) are the main players involved in humanitarian aid. This aid in Mexico comes through national and international instances. Here the actors meet the needs of the people affected individually and not collectively. Pointing out that sometimes the same population (P) provides help to themselves. This research intends in a qualitative way to help the Mexican government to incorporate the integration of third and fourth-party logistics as actors for humanitarian aid; by proposing the formation of providers' groups focused on humanitarian aid with the aforementioned actors. This would help the population more efficiently by applying horizontal and vertical coordination, to reduce the response time when the affected population is in danger.

A first experiment conceived the use of a physical model (3D wave tank) to obtain the characteristics of recycled glass and natural sand under the same wave conditions. A second experiment was conducted to determine the rate of abrasion and mass losses due to abrasion of glass using a tumbler machine. Analysis of results was made in order to compare the performance of glass and sand, and to determine beach profiles and reflection coefficients for both materials. Beach evolution was measured and the reflection coefficients were obtained for the conditions tested. Glass was also tumbled for 56 days to determine the rate of abrasion and mass loss. The results show that glass performs equivalent at this scale to the sand showing little variation in profiles and reflected wave energy. Mass wasting of glass seems to be stable at the end of the experiments, after suffering a considerable loss at the beginning. The present study shows that recycled glass can be considered for beach nourishment based upon its performance versus natural sand. Proper consideration should be given to recycled glass as beach material in areas that are "sand deficient.

This study reveals how higher education in particular helps in certain areas, and shows that problems such as lack of investment in this sector slow down productivity and the interest in researching in the area through the implementation of the Malmquist index, comparing the 43 countries that have universities cataloged within the World University Ranking for 2012, 2013 and 2014, and formulating a benchmark to help detect which areas provide opportunities to improve and achieve higher productivity.

Scientists, engineers, universities, companies, and government agencies around the world, all of ... more Scientists, engineers, universities, companies, and government agencies around the world, all of them related to coastal engineering issues, understand the importance that High Performance Computing (HPC) has brought to the way they approach larger and physically complex problems within this field. This technology is being used to predict the effects of large storms approaching the coast (near real time) and with this information help authorities to handle emergencies generated by a hurricane. This work will make a brief review, in its introduction, of the initiatives that have been developed in the Netherlands and USA by different research groups and universities to implement algorithms for storm-surge prediction. In Sect. 2 we will focus our attention on the implementation and progress made by a research group involving actors at government level, and universities to make ADCIRC a tool employed for the end mentioned above. In Sect. 3 entitled, ADCIRC+SWAN for the Mexican Pacific, we shall show how this tool is being used to hindcast storm-surge by expounding a newborn project that is being developed at UAEM to implement a similar approach for the Mexican Pacific. Finally in Sect. 4, Conclusions, we will indicate how the work developed so far has changed the perspective that we and other countries have for dealing with the effects of a hurricane impacting our coasts.
