This transition is associated with the appearance of conics patterns on fracture surfaces that, in many materials, are the signature of damage spreading through the nucleation and growth of microcracks. A simple model allows to relate both the energetic and fractographic measurements. These results suggest that dynamic fracture at low velocities in amorphous materials is controlled by the brittle/quasi-brittle transition studied here.

Still, the way in which the crack selects its velocity in response to this energy flux remains far from completely understood. To uncover the underlying mechanisms, we experimentally studied damage and dissipation processes that develop during the dynamic failure of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), classically considered as the archetype of brittle amorphous materials. We evidenced a well-defined critical velocity along which failure switches from nominally-brittle to quasibrittle, where crack propagation goes hand in hand with the nucleation and growth of microcracks. Via postmortem analysis of the fracture surfaces, we were able to reconstruct the complete spatiotemporal microcracking dynamics with micrometer/nanosecond resolution. We demonstrated that the true local propagation speed of individual crack fronts is limited to a fairly low value, which can be much smaller than the apparent speed

You can opt for a closed technique (mastoidectomy simple) or open surgery (radical mastoidectomy). The open mastoidectomy with reconstruction of the posterior wall of the middle ear reconstruction in one surgery combines the advantages of both techniques as adequate surgical exposure, eradication of cholesteatoma and anatomical reconstruction of the middle ear structures. Objective. To evaluate the surgical results in the management of cholesteatoma with the technique of open mastoidectomy with reconstruction of the posterior wall and the middle ear in one surgery. Methods. Prospective analytical observational study conducted between 2009-2012 with patients undergoing this surgical technique in the Hospital Universitario del Valle, performing preoperative clinical monitoring and quarterly postoperative tomography and previous assessments of hearing and pre -and postoperative audiometry. Results. 45 patients were studied. Mean P...

Many treatment options exist for epistaxis, but with no consensus on which is the method of choice. We describe the case of a patient with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) secondary epistaxis with septoplasty managed with synthetic hard graft, which improved intensity and frequency of bleeding episodes. This technique is a variant of the septodermoplasty described by several authors, but the use of synthetic dura can help in obtaining better results and avoid taking skin grafts from other sites different from the surgical site.

Background: Most adults and children have high daily sodium intake and most adults strongly associate high salt intake with cardiovascular problems. Little is known about the association parents make between salt consumption and health for children. Methods: In California's Central Valley, qualitative interviews in Spanish investigated farmworking parents' views and understandings of dietary salt consumption. Hispanic female caregivers (N=30) were interviewed individually in their homes for 1.5 2 hours. Five focus groups were conducted (N=40 new participants), including one group with male caregivers. Interview transcripts were coded and thematically analyzed. Results: Caregivers believe children's excessive salt consumptions harmful, just as for adults. Children were viewed as controlling their own salt intake by age fiv...

Methods: Qualitative in-depth interviews (N=30) and five focus groups (N=40) were conducted in Spanish with Latino women and men. Topics included participants' knowledge of fluoride and the acceptability of fluoridated salt (NaF) as a preventive for dental caries. Audio recordings were translated to English, transcribed, and text data coded for emerging themes. Results: Salt (NaCl) was very present in multiple aspects of family and work life. Fluoride was often confused with iodine in salt. Aside from knowing fluoride was in toothpaste, most participants were unaware of its value in dental caries prevention. Before using NaF in their daily lives, the majority indicated they would first need to know and evaluate information about what ...

Participants were part of a psychosocial accompaniment program conducted by a team of professional psychologists and undergraduate students. The results show that religious beliefs, acknowledgment of moral and practical values, optimism, creativity when looking for alternatives, positive evaluation of adverse situations, good decision making abilities at critical moments, capacity to initiate effective behaviors, survival skills in aggressive social environments, communication skills, and pursuit of effective social support, preserving dignity, composed the personal resources set for the victims. Regarding empowerment the results indicate that there is a different qualitative relationship between the type of accompaniment programs and improvements in collective empowerment.

Analysis of 14,406 mandatory notifications of scorpion envenomation involving patients aged 0 to 19 years in Minas Gerais. After performing a univariate analysis of factors related to mortality (p < 0.25), multivariate analysis was carried out using logistic regression. The number of notifications of accidents involving scorpions increased over the period. The age group that suffered most accidents was 5 to 9 years. Local pain was reported in 95% of cases. The majority of cases were classified as mild (60%) and antivenom was given to 42% of this population. The mean mortality rate was 0.7%. The state capital, Belo Horizonte, was the municipality with the greatest occurrence of incidents. Each hour's delay before receiving first med...

In 2004, a community– university partnership resulted in the first Filipina breast cancer support group in the San Francisco Bay Area. Building on this partnership, we explored the social and cultural contexts of Filipinas’ experiences with breast cancer to inform development of culturally appropriate and sustainable support services and outreach. We utilized multiple qualitative methods (participant observation, individual and small group in-depth qualitative interviews) to identify meanings of survivorship and support. Interviews and observations revealed the influences of social context and immigration experiences on women’s understandings of cancer, what “surviving” cancer means, and what it means to take care of someone with breast cancer (or be taken care of). Our findings highlight the importance of a transnational perspective for the study of immigrant women’s experiences of...

The authors explored these constructs and their underlying assumptions relating to the social context of Filipina and Latina women. The mixed-methods study included testing construct measures in the multilingual surveys of a concurrent intervention study of 1,463 women from five ethnic groups. An intensive inductive investigation then targeted Latina and Filipina women to elucidate connections between
