Violence and vengeance joins a large literature on the violent communal conflicts which exploded ... more Violence and vengeance joins a large literature on the violent communal conflicts which exploded in Indonesia fifteen years ago. Christopher R. Duncan aims to bring to the fore the voices and understandings of the ordinary people involved. He asserts that for most, the defining feature of the violence was religious difference. Having written a book on the same conflict, this is a difficult review for me to write. I will therefore focus on the analytical approach taken by Duncan, only referring to specifics on which we disagree when necessary to illustrate my concerns. Some aspects of Duncan's book make it a welcome addition to the scholarship on North Maluku and conflict in Indonesia. Not only is his study based on extensive fieldwork, something too often missing in studies of conflict, but this occurred before, during and after the fighting, giving him an almost unique perspective. Scholars will find his discussion of the post-conflict era useful as this period has largely been missing from the literature. The book is well written despite regular jarring spelling errors ('casual' factor, p. 172; 'affect' of religious framing, p. 173; 'tenants' of Islam, p. 166) although some were amusing ('marital' prowess, p. 34). More vexingly, large sections discuss information that has already been published but are unreferenced. Duncan begins by claiming that most existing studies of the conflicts in North Maluku and elsewhere in that era are undermined by their quest for 'causation and chronology'. They are preoccupied with 'grand narratives that discuss timelines, causal mechanisms, and the roles of political elites and their parties' (p. 7). These studies are 'based on media reports and interviews with regional and national elites' (p. 8) and 'omit the stories and voices of those individuals most affected' (p. 7). He eschews 'causal analysis' of why things happened and who was to blame, and is more concerned with 'understanding people's conceptions and experiences of what they "know" happened' (p. 10). The Circles of 71 core members are reviewed in detail, with reference to demographic data, offense and sentencing histories, risk assessment data, and considerations regarding Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements. A group of 71 comparison subjects who were referred to CSE and deemed suitable for but did not receive the service was identified. Follow-up behaviors of both groups are examined (including all forms of reconviction, breach of orders, and prison recall). Over a comparable follow-up period of 55 months, the incidence of violent and contact sexual reconviction in the comparison group was significantly higher than for the Circles cohort. Many technologies and methodologies that improve the quality of the verification process and the productivity of the verification team have been developed and successfully deployed throughout the years. Random stimuli generation is certainly one of the main advances in the field of functional verification. The shift from manually created test cases to machine generated stimuli helped automating many aspects of the verification process, replacing expensive and scarce human experts with readily available compute power.
A rapid ultrasonic extraction method coupled with a heated-copper clean-up procedure for removing... more A rapid ultrasonic extraction method coupled with a heated-copper clean-up procedure for removing interfering constituents was developed for analyzing pyrethroid and phenylpyrazole pesticides in sediments. Incubation of the 60 mL extract with 12 g copper granules at 60 °C for 2h was determined to be the optimal conditions for removing the interfering constituents. Eleven pyrethroid and phenylpyrazole pesticides were spiked into sediment samples to determine the effectiveness of the ultrasonic extraction method. The average recoveries of pyrethroids and phenylpyrazoles in sediment at 4 °C storage on day 0, 1, 7, 14, and 21 ranged from 98.6 to 120.0%, 79.2 to 116.0%, 85.0 to 119.7%, 93.6 to 118.7%, and 92.1 to 118.2%, respectively, with all percent relative standard deviations less than 10% (most <6%). This illustrated the stability of pyrethroids and phenylpyrazoles in sediment during sediment aging at 4 °C. Recoveries of the pesticides ranged from 98.6% to 120.0% for lowest fortification level (2-16 μg kg⁻¹), from 97.8% to 117.9% for middle fortification level (10-80 μg kg⁻¹), and from 94.3% to 118.1% for highest fortification level (20-160 μg kg⁻¹). Relative standard deviations of pesticide recoveries were usually less than 7%. Method detection limits of target pesticides ranged from 0.22 μg kg⁻¹ to 3.72 μg kg⁻¹. Furthermore, field sediment samples collected from four residential lakes during a three-month monitoring period were analyzed to evaluate the effectiveness of this method. Bifenthrin was detected in all of sediment samples (highest concentration 260.33±41.71 μg kg⁻¹, lowest concentration 5.68±0.38 μg kg⁻¹, and fipronil sulfone was detected at least once in sediment samples collected from three sites with concentrations ranging from 1.73±0.53 to 7.53±0.01 μg kg⁻¹.

The two cell lines most commonly used for production of rAd vectors, 293 and Per.C6, were derived from human primary cells and contain contiguous E1A and E1B sequences from the Ad genome. As an alternative system, we tested complementation of rAd vectors using sequential transfection of individual E1A and E1B expression cassettes into A549 human lung tumor cells, which support highly efficient replication of wild type adenovirus. We found that E1A function could be complemented in A549 cells by the mutant E1Adl01/07, and that E1B function could be provided in such cells using only the 55K E1B gene. Production yields in the resulting producer cell line, designated SL0003, were similar to those obtained from 293 cells without generation of detectable recombinant replication competent adenovirus.

Unfortunately, yeast researchers use a definition of longevity not applied to other species. We propose here a method that makes it possible to estimate for yeast the same measures of longevity calculated for other species. We also show that the conventional method (equating longevity with the number of offspring) is only an approximate measure of true chronological lifespan. Our method will allow results for yeast to be compared more correctly with those for other species.
The probability density functions (PDFs) of sea level and geostrophic relative vorticity are exam... more The probability density functions (PDFs) of sea level and geostrophic relative vorticity are examined using satellite altimeter data. It is shown that departures from a Gaussian distribution can generally be represented by two functions, and that the spatial distribution of these two functions is closely linked to the skewness and kurtosis of the PDF. The patterns indicate that strong jets tend to be identified by a zero contour in skewness coinciding with a low value of kurtosis. A simple model of the statistics of a meandering frontal region is presented which reproduces these features. Comparisons with mean currents and sea surface temperature gradients confirm the identification of these features as jets, and confirm the existence of several Southern Ocean jets unresolved by drifter data. Diagnostics from a range of idealized eddying model simulations show that there is a strong, simple relationship between kurtosis of potential vorticity and effective diffusivity. This suggests that kurtosis may provide a simple method of mapping mixing barriers in the ocean.

Eddy fluxes are directed downgradient on average when either (i) there is a Lagrangian increase in tracer variance or (ii) there is strong dissipation of tracer variance. The effect of the eddies on the mean tracer evolution can be described through an ensemble of eddies that each have a particular life cycle.
