In this pa per, an approach to handle idioms and phrasal verbs for English-Myanmar machine translation is proposed. This technique consists of two phases, the analyzin g phase and the grouping phase. In the analyzing phas e, the given English sentence is analyzed to find whet her it contains any phrasal verbs or idioms. In the grouping phase, if any phrasal verb or idiom is fou nd in the given sentence, it will be grouped into a si ngle unit and it will be categorized with a special tag in order to denote it as the phrasal verb or idiom. Th e proposed approach can be incorporated with rule based English-Myanmar machine translation system with some modifications and can increase the accura cy

Generally, Myanmar language is the syllabic language and the combination of consonant and vowel phonemes can make syllable. In this paper, we proposed new phoneme concatenation algorithm for MTTS system. Consequently, firstly, we created phoneme speech database in which there are only 125 phoneme units that can speech out for any Myanmar texts. It is very suitable for resource limited devices, such as mobile phones. In our proposed system, firstly, the system accepts input Myanmar texts and then these texts are normalized for next processing. After that, the standized texts are converted into phoneme sequences by using proposed phonological rules that can get the high quality MTTS system. Detecting phrase boundary is also considered to assign pause duration for the purpose of getting more natural sounding MTTS. In the case of speech generation, we concatenate the phoneme speech units with our proposed algorithm. According to the experimental result, our proposed phoneme concatenation algorithm achieves the acceptable level of intelligibility and naturalness for Myanmar speech output.

Concatenative method has been used to develop this TTS system using phoneme as the basic units for concatenation. In this proposed system, phoneme plays an important role so that Myanmar phoneme inventory is presented in detail. In Myanmar language, schwa is the only vowel that is allowed in a minor syllable or consonant that has half-sound of the original one. If these half sound can be handled, the TTS quality will be high. After analyzing the number of phoneme and half-sound consonant to be recorded, create the Myanmar phoneme speech database which contains total 157 phoneme speech sounds that can speech out for all Myanmar texts. These phonemes are fetched according to the result from the phonetic analysis modules and concatenated them by using proposed new phoneme concatenation algorithm. According to the experimental results, the system achieved the high level of intelligibility and acceptable level of naturalness. As the application area, it is intended for the resource limited device to use as language learning app and so on.

In this day and age, the usage of mobile phones is extremely increasing so the researchers focus on speech processing on mobile devices. TTS system for mobile phones is difficult to implement as they have limited storage capacity and computing performance. Therefore, phoneme based Myanmar TTS (MTTS) system is proposed for resource limited devices. In this paper, rule based Myanmar number conversion and new phonological rules are proposed. For speech generation, firstly, phoneme speech database in which there are only 133 phoneme units is created and then the new phoneme concatenation algorithm is applied. Moreover, each module of MTTS system is presented in detail with their respective experimental results and the system achieved the acceptable level of intelligibility although naturalness is still needed to achieve the satisfactory level according to these results.

The most important challenge in this method is choosing an appropriate unit for creating a database. The present used speech units are word, syllable, di-phone, tri-phone and phoneme. The speech quality may be trade-off between the selected speech units. This paper presents the three speech synthesis system of Myanmar language, respectively based on syllable, di-phone and phoneme speech units by using concatenation method. Then, we compare the speech quality of the three systems, using the subjective tests.

Language is sequential - speech is a sequence of sounds whereas writing is a sequence of symbols. To produce a good piece of writing, learners need to enrich their vocabularies. Vocabulary knowledge is also one component of language skills such as reading and speaking. Since the meanings of new words are emphasized frequently, vocabulary learning plays a crucial role in foreign language learning. Teaching and learning vocabulary in context also helps learners for inferring the meaning of new words. Vocabulary development is concerned with all four language skills and it can be treated as a link between reading and writing.
