Prevention initiatives are, however, important for reducing the incidence of brain injury. This report examines the development and implementation of an interactive electronic teaching program (an e-module) that is designed specifically for concussion education within an adolescent population. This learning tool and the accompanying consolidation rubric demonstrate that significant engagement occurs in addition to the knowledge gained among participants when it is used in a school curriculum setting.

Subsequent simple linear regression procedures found Emotional Self-Control [β = 0.486, t(74) = 2.016, p = 0.052] and Emotional Management of Others [β = 0.494, t(74) = 2.310, p = 0.027] predict a strong relationship in the positive direction between four of the five Inviting School Survey-Revised (ISSR) domains of school climate. By contrast, analysis of the Emotional Self-Awareness [β = 0.172, t(74) = 0.816, p = 0.420] results identified a strong relationship in the negative direction between all five ISS-R dimensions of school climate. Results affirmed previous research that indicated the leader’s overall emotional intelligence, rather than the leader’s self-awareness alone, influences the followers’ perception of...

Different cultural backgrounds of the students compared to the teacher can increase misconceptions or confusion. Although the effective teacher may plan for a range of questions to promote classroom discussion, the more cultural diversity exhibited within a classroom, the greater the likelihood for miscommunication. The intentionally inviting teacher understands different does not mean deficient. This type of effective teacher handles miscommunication, misconceptions, or conceptual confusion by empowering the diverse learner to actively seek or provide greater clarity. By contrast, when a culturally diverse learner’s response does not fit the instructor’s preconceived expectations, the intentionally disinviting teacher can disable the learner’s continued inclusion in class dialogue. As a foundational system for responsive classroom management, Invitational...

Little is known about the incidence or outcomes of CPVT patients with ≥2 variants. The phenotypes, genotypes and outcomes of patients in the Pediatric and Congenital Electrophysiology Society CPVT Registry with ≥2 variants in genes linked to CPVT were ascertained. The American College of Medical Genetics & Genomics (ACMG) criteria and structural mapping were used to predict the pathogenicity of variants (3D model of pig RyR2 in open-state). Among 237 CPVT subjects, 193 (81%) had genetic testing. Fifteen patients (8%) with a median age of 9 years (IQR 5-12) had ≥2 variants. Sudden cardiac arrest occurred in 11 children (73%), although none died during a median follow-up of 4.3 years (IQR 2.5-6.1). Thirteen patients (80%) had at least two RYR2 variants, while the remaining two patients had RYR2 variants plus variants in other CPVT-link...

Impairment of skin barrier function is often demonstrated by an altered integrity of the stratum corneum (SC) and a consequential increase in transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Skin barrier function impairment often arises from direct damage followed by a breach in the SC and/or a decrease in or dysfunction of SC lipids. The most common dermatological disorder is dry and flaky skin. This arises from direct damage to the SC with potential mechanical failure and from an impairment in SC cell (corneocyte) maturation and its desquamation together with a decrease in the water holding capacity of the SC. Dry and flaky skin is associated with a range of pathological and physiological abnormalities and can be treated with moisturizers, especially those which enhance SC barrier function. This paper gives a brief overview of the work conducted in this area of science over the past decade.Section editor:Michael Roberts – School of Medicine, University of Queensland, Australia

Ecologists have developed approaches to restore grassland communities and many have been successful, particularly where soils are rich, precipitation is abundant, and seeds of native plant species can be obtained. However, climate change adds a new filter needed in planning grassland restoration efforts. Potential responses of species to future climate conditions must also be considered in planning for long-term resilience. We demonstrate this methodology using a site-specific model and a maximum entropy approach to predict changes in habitat suitability for 33 grassland plant species in the tallgrass prairie region of the U.S. using the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change scenarios A1B and A2. The A1B scenario predicts an increase in temperature from 1.4 to 6.4°C, whereas the A2 scenario predicts temperature increases from 2 to...

Diagnosis is often difficult to establish and delayed due to a low incidence. We present the case of a patient aged 26 years with a life-long history of persistent urinary incontinence. Initial presentation was at childhood; however, the diagnosis went undetermined for 22 years. CT urography revealed a duplex kidney with an atrophic upper pole associated with an ectopic ureter that drained into the vaginal vault. This is the first description of such a case being managed successfully via a robot-assisted partial nephrectomy approach. Ectopic ureteral duplication should be considered in the differential diagnosis for young women with refractory urinary incontinence. Robotic partial nephrectomy is a safe and effective technique to manage such cases.

Mutations in RYR2-coded Ryanodine Receptor-2 (RyR2) and CASQ2-coded Calsequestrin-2 (CASQ2) genes underlie CPVT1 and CPVT2, respectively. However, prognostic markers are scarce. We sought to better characterize the phenotypic and genotypic spectrum of CPVT, and utilize molecular modelling to help account for clinical phenotypes. This is a Pediatric and Congenital Electrophysiology Society multicentre, retrospective cohort study of CPVT patients diagnosed at <19 years of age and their first-degree relatives. Genetic testing was undertaken in 194 of 236 subjects (82%) during 3.5 (1.4-5.3) years of follow-up. The majority (60%) had RyR2-associated CPVT1. Variant locations were predicted based on a 3D structural model of RyR2. Specific residues appear to have key structural importance, supported by an association between cardiac arres...

Few studies examine clutch fate across the wide range of environments experienced by birds; instead, most focus at the small site scale. We examine survival of model shorebird clutches as an index of true clutch survival at a regional scale (∼200 km), encompassing a variety of geomorphologies, predator communities, and human use regimes in southeast Queensland, Australia. Of the 132 model nests deployed and monitored with cameras, 45 (34%) survived the experimental exposure period. Thirty-five (27%) were lost to flooding, 32 (24%) were depredated, nine (7%) buried by sand, seven (5%) destroyed by people, three (2%) failed by unknown causes, and one (1%) was destroyed by a dog. Clutch fate differed substantially among regions, particularly with respect to losses from flooding and predation. ‘Top...

It is usual to allow an equilibration time to elapse after tissue trauma caused by probe insertion. One of the prerequisites for correct interpretation of data is detailed knowledge of the effect of insertion and presence of the probe in the skin, especially in the tissue closest to the membrane. Methods: Laser Doppler perfusion imaging was used to investigate the time required for blood perfusion to return to near normal levels after probe insertion. The standard system was used in parallel with a high resolution system. The latter gave 3600 measurement sites in an area of 2 cmx2 cm and thus enabled a detailed study of circulatory changes immediately around the membrane. Perfusion levels prior to probe insertion as well as the perfusion response to probe insertion were recorded by both systems. Results: In agreement with previous findings, the perfusion levels were found to return to near normal levels within 60 min. Individual variations were, however, seen. High resolution laser Doppler perfusion imaging provided detailed visualisation of these variations both spatially and over time. Conclusions: High resolution laser Doppler perfusion imaging is superior to standard laser Doppler perfusion imaging in detailed visualisation of the variations in skin blood perfusion after microdialysis probe insertion. The individual variations seen can be of importance in the interpretation of microdialysis data.
