Boris Magrini
Boris Magrini is Senior Curator at LAS Art Foundation in Berlin. Previously, he was Head of Programme and Curator and part of the museum direction
at HEK (House of Electronic Arts). He studied art history at the University of Geneva
and completed his PhD at the University of Zurich. He was curator at àDuplex in Geneva
and assistant curator at Kunsthalle Fribourg and Kunsthalle Zurich. He was expert for the visual arts and a member of the boards of trustees at Pro Helvetia, the Swiss Arts Council, a member of the jury panel at Lumen Prize, The Award for Art and Technology, a member of the jury panel State of the ART(ist) at Ars Electronica, and a member of the reviewer panel for the 29th International Symposium of Electronic Art (ISEA). He regularly contributes articles on contemporary and new media art in magazines and exhibition catalogues. He has curated group exhibitions on the topics of blockchain, ecology, artificial intelligence, art games and counter-cartography, and frequently participates in international panels and juries.
Curated shows include: Exploring the Decentralized Web – Art on the Blockchain (2023), Earthbound (2022), Radical Gaming (2021), Shaping the Invisible World (2020), Entangled Realities – Living with Artificial Intelligence (2019), Future Love. Desire and Kinship in Hypernature (2018), Grounded Visions: Artistic Research into Environmental Issues (2015–2016), Hydra Project (2016), Anathema (2007-2008), and Mutamenti (2007). He has created and curated the experimental electronic concert series Noise Gate at HEK. Some of his recent publications include: «Kunst und das Metaverse heute – ein Wettbewerbsfeld» in Kunstforum (Vol. 290, 2023), «Automation and Intentionality - Photography Without the Camera» in Automated Photography (ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne, Mörel Books: 2021), «Strategies of Neogeography in Recent Media Art» in Shifts in Mapping - Maps as a Tool of Knowledge (Bielefeld: transcript 2021), “Building New Paradigms - A Brief History of Artificial Intelligence and Art” in Entangled Realities (Basel: CMV 2019), “Alternative Visions: Human Futures” in Transdiscourse 2 - Turbulence and Reconstruction (Berlin: De Gruyter 2016), and “Hackteria: An Example of Neomodern Activism” in Leonardo Electronic Almanac (Vol. 20, Issue 1, 2014). His book Confronting the Machine (Berlin/Boston: de Gruyter 2017) examines the traditional narratives relating artistic production to technology and the society, while offering an unconventional perspective on digital art.
