In situ High-Pressure-and High-Temperature Studies of Siliconsuboxides via Energy Dispersive X-ray Diffraction Abstract. The amorphous silicon compounds Si 2 O 3 , H 2 Si 2 O 4 , HSiO 1.5 , and SiO have been investigated under High-Pressure-and High-Temperature conditions in situ via energy dispersive X-ray diffraction with synchrotron radiation. The studies have been performed using the Multi Anvil High Pressure Device MAX-80, at HASYLAB, DESY-Hamburg, Germany. Except for SiO, at a pre-set pressure of 45 kbars the formation of Coesite was observed at heating. Commercially available SiO did not crystallize in any way, indicating that it seems not to consist of silicon(II)-oxide, but is in fact a mixture of silicon and silicondioxide, disproportionated on an atomic scale.

Considering the geometrical limits of the used diractometer this leads to the range of momentum transfer from 0.8 to 29 # A À1. The structure factors and the pair correlation functions show that the curves are more damped for the silicon sesquioxide Si 2 O 3. From the pair correlation functions of both substances, we retrieve a nearest neighbour distance of about 1.6 # A as is typical for a Si±O bond for tetrahedrally coordinated silicon and of about 2.3 # A that can be related to a direct Si±Si coordination.

Optimal dispersion of the silica as primary particles is essential and this can be achieved by incorporating it at an early stage of the mixing process before other fillers are added. This ensures that the PVC grains are coated with SIDISTAR. This material is able to function as an impact modifier via the cavitation mechanism and it will also improve the dispersion of the other ingredients in the compound. It was found that SIDISTAR delayed gelation of the PVC compound, but this could be avoided by minor changes in formulation and processing conditions. Reduction in gelation time resulted in improved impact performance. Furthermore, compounds containing SIDISTAR possessed a wide processing window.

The QC and Raman studies indicate the formation of the Si clusters inside the bulk of the SiO protoparticle at the very first stages of its gas-phase growth. Infrared, Raman, inelastic neutron scattering and electron spin resonance spectra for the synthesized SiO thin films and the commercial sample have been recorded and simulated in order to verify the theoretical model. The QC calculated radial distribution function and vibrational spectra reproduce well the experimental ones.
