In treating phonetic pr oblems, I soon found myself going beyond strictly phonetic (o r linguistic) domain to face general epistemological questions in which phonetic considerations merely e xemplify the importance of epistemol1ogical issues.

However, the mechanism of such a modification is not clear. We present a patient with emotional flattening and increased risk taking after left cerebellar infarct who had an impaired autonomic reactivity to negative as compared with positive reinforcement. This impairment was demonstrated by the patient's undifferentiated skin conductance responses to negative and positive reinforcement, whereas controls produced larger skin conductance responses after negative feedback. The cooccurrence of emotional flattening and undifferentiated autonomic reactions to positively and negatively valenced stimuli strengthens the role of the cerebellum in the modulation of the autonomic responses.

These features, e.g. voice quality and prosody, either occur spontaneously and are related to the speaker's emotional and/or physiological state or are produced intentionally and related to the speaker's attitudes or interaction strategies (even though the latter often include features that are meant to appear as unintentional). Acoustic analysis of the human voice thus allows the identification of vocal correlates of the speaker's emotional and/or physiological state as well as of his social intentions.
