solve the water problem caused by the increasing population and construction and to meet the
needs of the city, studies have been carried out in different periods waterways and water
structures have been built to transport water from the source to the city. Esenler, which is on
the periphery of Istanbul's central districts in terms of water structures and culture, has
remained in the background in the academic literature. Although there are individual studies
on some of these structures, there is no comprehensive research on the water structures in this
region. The aim of this study is to draw attention to the current situation of various Ottoman
and Byzantine water structures in the Esenler district of Istanbul, such as Nene Hatun Fountain,
Yavuz Sultan Selim Fountain, Menderes Fountain/Litros Ayazma, Atışalanı Sebili, Ma'zul
Aqueduct, Avasköy Arch, and Davutpaşa Barracks Water Tank, and to raise the consciousness
of these structures. In this context, five fountains, a sebil, two arches, and a water tank in the
district will be introduced with the data from the site and the relevant literature; the current
conservation and utilization problems of these structures will be discussed. Thus, it is believed
that the study will make an important contribution to the literature regarding the water
structures built in Istanbul, which are less known in the architectural history literature than
those in the central districts.
Keywords: Istanbul, Esenler, Water Structures, Fountains, Ma'zul Aqueduct, Avasköy Aqueduct.
