Amaranth (Amaranthus hypochondriacus L.) can be cultivated in greenhouses or the open field. Greenhouse cultivation provides better yields but may affect chemical composition. In this study we compared antioxidant capacity, content of total phenolic compounds, condensed tannins, anthocyanins, α-tocopherol and anti-nutritional factors (phytic acid and trypsin inhibition) in amaranth plants grown in the greenhouse and in the open field. An area of 100 m2 was used for each cultivation system. Cultures were performed by direct sowing in furrows, with a system of drip irrigation and no fertilizers were used. Student’s t test was used for comparison of variables in the two systems. Greenhouse-grown amaranth showed the highest values for total anthocyanins in leaf and α-tocopherol (leaf and seed), while in the open-field system, higher values of trypsin inhibition,...

This review shows the development of the pig gastrointestinal tract (GIT) since intrauterine life... more This review shows the development of the pig gastrointestinal tract (GIT) since intrauterine life. Immediately after birth, the GIT begins another important stage in its ontogenesis, which ensures for the piglets to have access to the protective substances in colostrum and milk nutrients. Another important stage in the development of the GIT begins after weaning. In general, life changes in the days around weaning leading to a decrease in feed intake, which, in turn, leads to nutritional stress that results in the atrophy of intestinal villi, diminishing the piglets ability to digest and absorb nutrients necessary for growth. The small intestine loses weight due to a net loss of intestinal mucosa. The decrease in voluntary feed intake also produces a reduction in both pancreatic enzyme activity, due to lack of substrate, and brush border enzyme activity, due to physical loss of enterocytes in the small intestine and to lack of substrate. Once the animals begin to eat solid food the ...

The aim of this study was to compare the basic chemical composition and growth parameters of Amaranthus hypochondriacus grown in a greenhouse in comparison to the open field. Each cropping system was assigned an experimental area of 100 m 2. Cultivation was performed directly in irrigated furrows without fertilizers. The same soil type was used for both cropping systems. Number of leaves, plant height, stem diameter, length of seeds, panicle length, biomass and grain yield, grain area, percentage of popped and sprouted grain, and chemical composition were compared. The variables under greenhouse cultivation yielded superior results were grain yield (26.5%), biomass (61.2%), plant height (87.4%), stem diameter (24.3%), number of leaves (2.4%), panicle length (18.4%), percentage of popped grain (2%) and sprouted grain (7%) than field cultivation. Open field cultivation improved protein, fat and ash (9.0%, 17.6% and 43.1%, respectively), and grain size (22.5%) than greenhouse production. Thus, it may be concluded that greenhouse cultivation of A. hypochondriacus crop provides for higher yields, but inferior chemical composition values compared to the open field cultivation system.

The composition of goat milk and its products may vary depending on factors such as season, feeding system and heat treatment. The aim of this work is to quantify total phenolic compounds (TPC) and antioxidant capacity in pasteurized and unpasteurized samples of milk, milk whey, and cheese from goats fed in two different systems (free-range grazing and permanent confinement), during dry and rainy seasons. TPC concentrations were highest in unpasteurized samples from dry season compared to pasteurized and rainy season: 132.4 ± 27.3, 76.5 ± 5.77 mg of gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/L for unpasteurized milk and milk whey, respectively, and 363.21 ± 52.97 mg GAE/Kg for cheese. Antioxidant capacity for dry season produce was significantly higher (P

Experiment one was conducted to test if DPP and PPC in an antibiotic-free diet affected pig performance, and faecal consistency. Eighty-four piglets weaned at 22 days and weighing 6.9 kg were used. Piglets were fed for two weeks with one of four diets: a positive control diet with antibiotics (C+); and three others diets without antibiotics added with DPP, PPC, or DPP and PPC (DPP+PPC) to measure the average daily feed intake (ADFI), average daily gain (ADG), feed efficiency (FE), and incidence and severity of diarrhoea (ID and ISD respectively). In experiment two, twenty-four piglets weaned at 17 days and weighing 5.7 kg, were implanted at 21 days of age with a T-cannula at the terminal ileum to measure the apparent ileal digestibility (AID) and the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of nut...

We also evaluated the pigs' performance and the presence of kafirin fractions in sorghum samples and in ileal digesta. We used 24 pigs that weighed 22.1 ± 0.65 kg randomly assigned to four different cereal-soybean meal diets: a corn-based (control diet; C), a low tannin and low kafirin sorghum-based (LTLK), a low tannin and high kafirin sorghum-based (LTHK), and a high tannin and high kafirin sorghum-based (HTHK). We evaluated the pH of the gastrointestinal digesta, the liver and pancreas weight, and the total and specific trypsin and chymotrypsin enzymatic activities in the pancreas, and the intestinal villi morphology. The results indicated that the different sorghum diets did not affect the performance of the pigs (P > .05) or the majority of the evaluated morphophysiological parameters. The total trypsin activity was higher in pigs fed the HTHK diet (P < .001). The highest intensity/area of the kafirin fractions was noted in ileal digesta from pigs fed LTHK and HTHK diets. The simultaneous presence of high levels of tannins and kafirins could affect the digestion of sorghum proteins.

Anemia was induced by feeding rats with an iron-deficient diet (IDD) for 11 days and iron-recovery diets were subsequently tested for 14 days using a normal diet, a 10 % bean leaf-supplemented IDD (BLSD) or a ferrous sulfate-supplemented IDD. Decreased levels of leukocytes (64 %), erythrocytes (30 %), lymphocytes (62 %), granulocytes (72 %), hematocrit (34 %), hemoglobin (35 %), and ferritin (34 %) were observed in the iron-deficient rats compared to the control rats. BLSD supplementation showed the highest recovery values relative to those recorded for control rats: leukocytes (40 %), erythrocytes (24 %), lymphocytes (33 %), granulocytes (88 %), hematocrit (17 %), and hemoglobin (18 %), suggesting that common bean leaves could be a good source of bioavailable iron with possible immunomodulatory effects.

However, only a few studies have researched this subject in piglets. Knowledge regarding AA ileal digestibility in piglets would be helpful during the formulation of diets for weaning piglets, rather than just using coefficients obtained in growing pigs. Therefore, in this study, we sought to estimate endogenous protein and AA ileal losses in piglets. Furthermore, apparent and true ileal digestibility (AID and TID) of protein and AAs from casein were measured. Results The average flow of protein was 20.8 g/kg of dry matter intake (DMI). Basal protein loss, as estimated by regression, was 16.9 g/kg DMI. Glutamic acid, arginine, and aspartic acid (2.2, 1.4, and 1.2 g/kg DMI, respectively) were the AAs for which greater losses were seen. The AID of protein and AAs increased as the protein level in the diet increased. A higher increment in AID was observed betw...
