However, there is little information on the prevalence of LDs in well-defined pediatric epileptic populations. OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to evaluate LDs in epileptic children. METHODS: We evaluated LDs in 37 epileptic children (18 boys and 19 girls; mean age: 8.29 ± 1.00 years) who had idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE) and were being treated with sodium-valproate monotherapy (22 with generalized tonic-clonic seizures and 15 with absence epilepsy). The mean duration of epilepsy and treatment was 3.48 ± 1.88 and 2.96 ± 1.80 years, respectively. All children attended mainstream schools, and their seizures were well controlled (without seizures for at least 6 months). We used the Athina Test for the Diagnosis of Learning Difficulties, a test that is partly based on the Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities, standardized in healthy Greek chi...

Ophthalmologic evaluation was performed in 80 infants (47.1%), of whom 12 (15%) had ROP although only 2 (2.5%) had severe ROP. Thirty five (20.6%) had intraventricular hemorrhage and 8 (4.7%) had IVH = 3. The overall mortality was 11.2%. Conclusions Comparing with the literature, our results were similar in variables as prenatal care, antenatal steroids, C-section and surfactant administration. We had less newborns receiving any assisted ventilation, a lower incidence of comorbidities as NEC and acceptable results of BPD. Our ROP results are not very different from the literature, however we had a lower incidence of VLBW with ophthalmologic evaluation performed. The overall mortality was similar to other Units.

Objective To describe the events leading to the epidemic of congenital rubella syndrome in Greece... more Objective To describe the events leading to the epidemic of congenital rubella syndrome in Greece in 1993 after a major rubella epidemic. Design Retrospective survey and systematic review. Setting Greece (population 10 million), 1950-95. Subjects Children, adolescents, and women of childbearing age. Results Around 1975 in Greece the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine started being given to boys and girls aged 1 year without policies to attain high vaccination coverage and to protect adolescents and young women. During the 1980s, vaccination coverage for rubella remained consistently below 50%, and the proportion of pregnant women susceptible to rubella gradually increased. In 1993 the incidence of rubella in young adults was higher than in any previous epidemic year. The epidemic of congenital rubella that followed, with 25 serologically confirmed cases (24.6 per 100 000 live births), was probably the largest such epidemic in Greece after 1950. Conclusions With low vaccination coverage, the immunisation of boys and girls aged 1 year against rubella carries the theoretical risk of increasing the occurrence of congenital rubella. This phenomenon, which has not been previously reported, occurred in Greece.

In 2017, 94 % of mothers initiated breast-feeding. Breast-feeding rates were 80, 56 and 45 % by the end of the 1st, 4th and 6th completed month of age, respectively. At the same ages, 40, 25 and <1 % of babies, respectively, were exclusively breast-feeding. We also found early introduction of solid foods (after...

We argue that the evidence about a relation between maternal total mercury (THg) and child fine motor (FM) neurodevelopmental scores remains insufficient. To fill this gap, we analyze...
