Professor Anthony J. Frendo is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and Professor of Near Eastern Archaeology and the Hebrew Bible at the University of Malta where he is a member both of the Department of Oriental Studies as well as that of Classics and Archaeology. He is a one-time Head of both Departments (1999-2011 of the former, and 1996-1999 of the latter). From 2009 to 2018 he was the local Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Malta. His main interests are Biblical Archaeology, Classical Hebrew, North-West Semitic Inscriptions (especially Phoenician-Punic), and the Historiography of Ancient Israel. He has degrees in Philosophy, Theology, Near Eastern Studies, and Biblical Exegesis, and he holds a Ph.D. in Biblical Archaeology. He is the author of Pre-Exilic Israel, the Hebrew Bible, and Archaeology: integrating Text and Artefact published by T & T Clark International, as well as the author of many book reviews, book chapters, and articles published in peer-reviewed publications.

The topics I deal with in this book are partly those from many years gone by and partly from very recent times. For over thirty years, I taught a good deal of the issues discussed in this book, however, the topic I finally investigated demanded that I also had to dig into fresh soil. I first want to thank all those students who over the years sat in my lectures on methods of research, and Phoenician archaeology and epigraphy. I underscore the fact that the questions some put to me were of a type that revealed how intelligent, observant, and dedicated they were. It is impossible to single out these students, however, suffice it to say that many of them are today friends and colleagues. The research for this book was carried out over many years-partly here at the University of Malta, and partly at the University of Oxford, where I went on research visits practically every year for many years. Heartfelt thanks to all my friends and colleagues in both institutionsthey know who they are-true friends. Some Reflections on Malta in the Phoenician World

The Phoenician presence in Malta belongs to the most ancient phase of Phoenician colonization, na... more The Phoenician presence in Malta belongs to the most ancient phase of Phoenician colonization, namely in the second half of the eighth century B.C. It appears to be the result of Phoenician navigation from the East to the West along the ‘way of the sun’. Moreover, the Phoenicians used native settlements in Malta, both in the interior of the island, as can be seen from the concentration of tombs in the Rabat–Mdina zone, and on the coast, as is demonstrated by the Italian discoveries at Tas-Silġ where a Phoenician cult succeeds the prehistoric one. There are numerous and specific connections between Malta and the East in the pottery, in the crafts, in the writing and in the language. On the contrary, there do not seem to be specific connections with Carthage nor with Punic Sicily. Evidently, Malta soon found itself outside the main route that linked these areas, and was less exposed to the course of history.
