The article explores the linkage among management, spirituality, religion, the concepts of corpor... more The article explores the linkage among management, spirituality, religion, the concepts of corporate social responsibility (CSR)/corporate citizenship (CC), and their connections specifically with the tenets of the Spiritism Doctrine (SD). Overall, findings showed that, in theoretical terms, an ample convergence was found among the concepts of CSR, CC, and SD. More specifically, the concepts of CSR and CC describe the new duties and obligations, which make the manager's work more complex and challenging, while the SD clarifies the moral implications of decision making process, as well as suggesting some spiritually-based organizational policies that might be put into practice.
O presente artigo apresenta os resultados de um estudo exploratório de natureza qualitativa reali... more O presente artigo apresenta os resultados de um estudo exploratório de natureza qualitativa realizado com docentes do terceiro grau dos cursos de Administração e/ou Marketing. O estudo é comparativo e envolve a análise de dois grupos distintos. O primeiro constituído de docentes que lecionam disciplinas e/ou matérias ligadas a marketing. O segundo, de professores que lecionam outras matérias não atreladas ao primeiro grupo, tais como Teoria Geral da Administração, Economia, Psicologia etc. Buscou-se conhecer e aprofundar - junto a uma amostra de 16 professores universitários - a opinião dos participantes sobre vários temas ligados ao trabalho do professor. Design/methodology/approach Throughout the endeavor, the author received substantial feedback and evaluations from editors and reviewers that allowed him to understand better the motivation of those that are dedicated to carry out such task; enhance his work whenever was possible; increase his resilience and self-motivation; and identify several inconsistencies of the peer-review process. This paper examines whether the spiritually-based organization (SBO) can be regarded as an impera... more This paper examines whether the spiritually-based organization (SBO) can be regarded as an imperative for the third millennium. As a result, it draws on the literature review of organizational spirituality, psychology of religion, positive psychology, and spirituality leadership theory in order to support its conclusions, as well as it offers some research propositions. Overall, the evidence gathered throughout this paper suggests that the spiritual paradigm starts to play a key role alongside with the concept of SBOs. Rather, it concludes that these topics can be regarded as authentic imperatives for this millennium. Nonetheless, it argues that is likely to take some time until the spirituality topic may mold, so to speak, organizations' character regarding that spiritual theme is starting to become a noteworthy topic. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to explore such a theoretical stream by means of the Spiritism Doctrine (SD) tenets. In fact, the spiritual knowledge derived from this religion alludes to aspects worthy of investigation. Design/methodology/approach Religious lens serves as a robust frame to approach the MOW, given that people’s beliefs likely shape their view about work. Toward that end, it examines pivotal aspects of MOW literature and the SD revelations thereof. This is a comparative study and involves the analysis of two distinct groups. The first group is constituted by professors who teach other subjects not linked to the first group, such as General Theory of Management, Management, Psychology, etc. It was intended to deepen - with a sampling of 16 university professors - the knowledge about the opinion of the participants on the various themes related to the professor. Design/methodology/approach This investigation relies on historical analysis by addressing essentially a surface-level indicator (i.e. gender preferences). Rather, this study is grounded on data from the companies that were awarded as one of the best organizations to work for in Brazil by Época-Great Place to Work® Institute and Guia Você S/A lists (between 2012 and 2016). As a result, four organizations were selected, that is, the most representative examples of gender doing. Design/methodology/approach This study draws on a qualitative research design and social constructivism paradigm. In addition, it uses the template analysis, a peculiar form of thematic analysis, which is grounded on the hierarchical coding. Accordingly, it allows the researcher to yield a broad structure (obviously through the task of analyzing textual data, i.e. published texts) as well as providing enough flexibility to comply with the needs of a study. Purpose This study aims to increase the understanding about the concept of high-quality connectio... more Purpose This study aims to increase the understanding about the concept of high-quality connections (HQCs) by examining how it develops between members of different generations. Design/methodology/approach It draws on film-based method to explain how the theory of HQC unfolds, particularly in a context of high intergenerational connection. Findings This study reflects the analysis of a movie that, to a large extent, fits in the HQCs conceptual framework. Rather, all key mechanisms of HQCs concept (i.e. behavioral, cognitive and emotional) were found in the plot of Die Hard 4.0. It provides compelling evidence that films may explore the possibilities of reality including the nuances of the relationships among human beings, despite the fact that it portrays a fictional creation. In doing so, it shows that HQCs are likely to be found – as very often happens in the real life – even in the worst situations. Findings also show that HQCs may be built through the time as individuals start to better know each other, i.e. their styles, behavior, religion preferences, held values, capabilities and interpersonal skills. Research limitations/implications Otherwise, film method does not allow that the research results be generalized. At best, it offers elements to the viewers reflect about. Practical implications Very often individuals are designated to carry out certain tasks along with unknown colleagues with whom they need to interact in a positive manner to accomplish the goals. As a result, organizations should pay close attention to the quality of connections among their employees. Originality/value To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first endeavor toward analyzing the mechanisms of HQCs concept by means of such approach. In doing so, this analysis strongly corroborates HQCs concept functioning.
