I am Classical Archaeologist, specialised in Anatolian archaeology in the 1st millennium BC, in particular Karia.
I nourish a profound interest and possess expertise in theoretical issues such as the concept of style and material culture, iconology, acculturation, colonialism (middle ground) and ethnicity studies. In recent years the position of religion and ritual studies in archaeology has formed a central part of my research. I love the longe durée!

I hold a full time position outside academia, thus I'm less productive, but still available for a good discussion or a lecture on Karian business, sepulchral architecture, art history and archaeology

Karia and the Hekatomnids. The creation of a dynasty

Using predominantly archaeological evidence this study looks at the strategies employed by the He... more Using predominantly archaeological evidence this study looks at the strategies employed by the Hekatomnids to build and bolster their dynasty. Carstens examines architecture, sculpture coinage and inscriptions to reveal a systematic attempt to create a distinctive Hekatomnid iconographic style which emphasises its Anatolian roots to instill a sense of legitimacy but includes elements of the Classical and Persian traditions, "Creolization as political strategy" as Carstens puts it. Includes detailed reassessments of the Maussolleion at Halikarnassos and the Sanctuary of Zeus Labraundos.

The local rulers of the Hekatomnid dynasty, Maussollos and Idrieus, renovated the rural sanctuary... more The local rulers of the Hekatomnid dynasty, Maussollos and Idrieus, renovated the rural sanctuary dedicated to the local Karian Zeus Labraundos in the mountains north of Mylasa in Karia in the fourth century BC.1 The Hekatomnids were Persian satraps in the newly-established satrapy of Karia and they acted as both local kings and as representatives of the hegemonic power, the Achaemenid Persian Empire. The closest2 references to Achaemenid iconography in Labraunda are the two sphinxes found in 1953 in the cella of andron C and in 1960 southeast of andron B, respectively. Originally they served as corner acroteriae on andron B.3 As can be seen from the drawing of the restored façade of the andron, they add quite a prominent, seemingly foreign, element to the ostensibly traditional Greek ante-style façade of the building (Fig. 1). Tumulus Tumulus as Sema Space, Politics, Culture and Religion in the First Millennium BC

This contribution will focus on both the tumulus as a point of attraction, as a structure shaping... more This contribution will focus on both the tumulus as a point of attraction, as a structure shaping and defining landscape, and as a socio-cultural phenomenon. Impressive and well-preserved tumuli in Cyprus are rare, yet a detailed study of not least the magnificent publications of the Swedish Cyprus Expedition gives ample evidence of a quite extensive use of this type of grave marker. And other analyses of tomb types, funerary feasts, and rituals point to a sort of political communication via princely burials within a larger Near Eastern network, existing already by the Early Iron Age, long before the expansion of the Persian Empire to Anatolia and Cyprus. The paper explores the princely tumulus tomb as a political monument communicating complex meanings (space, politics, culture and religion) on many levels (locally, regionally, and 'internation-ally').

This contribution investigates the contradicting statement that the traditional view on Karia as ... more This contribution investigates the contradicting statement that the traditional view on Karia as a cultural backwater zone is both utterly wrong and quite right. Yet it offers only little to explain processes of cultural interaction and what archaeology through the last decade or more has labelled the "meeting of cultures". Rather than looking for cultural senders and receivers resulting in the eclectic nature of Karian styles, the 'Creole' is introduced as an explanatory model.

Arkaeologi handler om kultur, om historie, om menneskers liv og om menneskers omgang med ting. Ar... more Arkaeologi handler om kultur, om historie, om menneskers liv og om menneskers omgang med ting. Arkaeologens bidrag til historien har fysiske efterladenskaber af levet liv som udgangspunkt. Men denne lille note handler ikke om disse tings betydning i vores forsøg på at rekonstruere livet, som det måske var dengang − altså om arkaeologiens selvforståelse. Derimod handler den om tings direkte betydning i og for dannelsen af samfund, af sociale strukturer og af sociale spilleregler. Jeg vil fortaelle om ideologisk ikonografi. Om politisk kunst i det vestlige Anatolien i den periode, hvor området var en del af Perserriget, det vil sige i det 6. til 4. århundrede f.Kr. Jeg vil fortaelle om tingenes betydning for skabelse og vedligeholdelse af aristokratisk status, for at vise forbindelser mellem ting og sociale og politiske handlinger og budskaber. En alabastervase Under C.T. Newtons udgravninger af Maussollaeet i Halikarnassos i 1850'erne blev der blandt andet fundet en alabastervase. Vasen har indridset en kartouche med ordene Storkongen Xerxes på oldpersisk, elamitisk, babylonsk og egyptisk. Men hvordan endte den ved det store mindesmaerke for den kariske dynast og persiske satrap Maussollos? Tilmed i en sammenhaeng, der daterer sig et århundrede efter
