I am a veterinary surgeon. Presently working as a Senior clinician- At Farm Animal Teaching Hospital and Senior lecturer at the Department of Farm Animal Production and Health, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, University of Peradeniya. I am a dedicated senior student counselor for the welfare and betterment of university students. Furthermore, I am a fellow of the Sri Lanka College for Veterinary Surgeons while being an active member of a number of professional associations. I believe more than 12 professional awards that I have won for my more than 100 national and international scientific publications are an indicator of the success of my professional and academic carrier.

Carpectomy and partial arthrodesis as a surgical intervention for unilateral congenital flexion of carpal joint in a crossbred heifer calf: a case study

A twenty-day old calf was presented to the Farm Animal Teaching Hospital with the complaint of in... more A twenty-day old calf was presented to the Farm Animal Teaching Hospital with the complaint of inability to extend the left forelimb since the birth. The leg was congenitally flexed caudomedially at the carpal joint. Clinical examination and X-ray images revealed the malformation of the carpal bones and the elective surgery was made under the general anesthesia with Xylazine (0.05mg/kg, IM) and Ketamine (2mg/kg, IV). At the surgery, instead of six carpal bones only two (medial and lateral) were found. A wedge shaped (~15º) slice of partial arthrodesis was performed at cranial parts of distal epiphysis of the radius and ulna bones. Similar arthrodesis was performed in proximal epiphysis of the metacarpus bone as well. The leg was extended and after infiltration of long-acting Penicillin; joint capsule, subcutaneous incisions and skin were sutured. Post-operative care was followed with wound dressing and parental injections of longacting Penicillin for 5 weeks. Until one month post operatively, the joint was immobilized with specially prepared 4-armed ('U' shape) metal splints. Six days after the surgery, the calf started to bear the weight using the operated limb. The calf was discharged with usual walking stance, and it was further confirmed 6 months later.

Asian elephants feed on a wide variety of vegetation but their preference for particular plant sp... more Asian elephants feed on a wide variety of vegetation but their preference for particular plant species maybe an important factor in determining seasonal movements. We identified 63 elephant fodder plants in Udawalawe, consisting of 19 trees and 44 herbs and grasses. Elephant fodder species mainly occurred in scrub forest (40%) and grasslands (31%). Elephants in Udawalawe were more grazers than browsers year round. Availability of seasonal vegetation is a possible factor, keeping elephants inside the park during the dry season. unknown. Effect of pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin (PMS) on ovarian function of beef heifers, as influenced by progestins, plane of nutrition, and fasting

Beef heifers aged 1-3 years were kept on different planes of nutrition and given progestins to sy... more Beef heifers aged 1-3 years were kept on different planes of nutrition and given progestins to synchronize ovarian cycles. Treatments included fasting for 24 or 72 hr and/or administration of PMS 0 or 4 days, before the end of the synchronization regime. Ovulations and follicles greater than 3 mm in diameter were recorded at laparotomy and slaughter. Plane of nutrition, fasting, progestin treatment, time of year, and the dose and time of injection of PMS influenced follicular development and ovulation in PMStreated heifers. PMS given before the end of the progestin regime resulted in ovulation of a high proportion of follicles. The results are discussed in relation to design of experiments concerned with understanding the physiological basis of control of ovarian function in the cow.

Polyunsaturated fatty acids influence offspring sex ratio in cows

Dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) can influence fertility in farm animals. Some evidenc... more Dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) can influence fertility in farm animals. Some evidence in mice and sheep have suggested that PUFAs may influence offspring sex ratio, which may have significant value for cattle production. To test this hypothesis, three groups of Holstein cows were supplemented with either 0%, 3% or 5% protected fat (PF) in the form of calcium salt of fatty acids (rich in omega-6) from 14-21 days pre-partum until conception. Proven-fertile frozen semen from the same ejaculate was used for insemination. Calf sex recorded at birth was 8/19 (42.1%) male offspring in the control group, increasing to 14/20 (70%, P > 0.05) and 17/20 (85%, P < 0.05) in 3% and 5% PF, respectively. To test if this effect was caused by a direct influence on the oocyte, we supplemented bovine cumulus oocyte complexes during in vitro maturation with either omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), omega-6 linoleic acid (LA) or trans-10, cis-12 conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). Sex ratio of the produced transferable embryos was determined using PCR of SRY gene. Similar to the in vivo results, sex ratio was skewed to the male side in the embryos derived from LA-and CLA-treated oocytes (79% and 71%) compared to control and ALA-treated oocytes (44% and 54%, respectively). These results indicate that both dietary and in vitro supplementation of omega-6 PUFAs can skew the sex ratio towards the male side in cattle. Further experiments are required to confirm this effect on a larger scale and to study the mechanisms of action that might be involved.

On arrival, the animals were pyrexic (36.61˚C61˚C to 39˚C39˚C), tachycardiac (72/min to 100/min), tachypnoeic (15/min to 60/min) and the mucous membranes were muddy colored. The capillary refilling time was more than 2 seconds. The treatment protocol consisted of vigorous fluid therapy (0.9% Sodium Chloride Solution and 5% glucose solution), gastric decompression using a stomach tube, and administration of Flunixinmeglumine (1.1mg/kg, IV), Penicillin and Streptomycin (20/20LA, 20ml, IM) and in 03 cases ceftriaxone® (50 mg/kg IV, bid). The hematology in all cases revealed haemo-concentration with an increased packed cell volume and elevated serum protein. There was also a neutrophilic leukocytosis with a left shift.
