It generates over 90% of the nation revenue through oil production. Essentially, oil related activities have caused severe climate and environmental changes with attendant adverse impacts on the people's livelihood. This paper highlights some of the main climate and environmental changes that have occurred in the Niger Delta Region highlighting the relationship between these changes and the people's socioeconomic prospects, and suggests possible institutional approach to ameliorating the problem.

This paper interrogates the poverty alleviation programmes of the Nigerian government in the current decade with a view to proposing an alternative paradigm for rural poverty alleviation. Through an observationaltheoretical approach, a model of poverty alleviation that is anchored on the perceptions, views and aspirations of the rural people was articulated and presented. The model represents a shift from a conventional top-bottom approach where the “Urban Elites” occupy the top role in the poverty alleviation schemes to put the rural people at the top. It is believed that making rural people major stakeholders in the planning and implementation of poverty alleviation programmes in their domain is key to addressing rural poverty

This paper demonstrates the need and importance of urban design as a tool and framework for achieving sustainable urban transformation in Nigeria. Through an elaborate review of concepts and the synthesis of ideas from literature, the paper outlines a four-point agenda for evolving and utilizing urban design by built environment professionals, policy makers and other stakeholders who are interested in coming to grips with the problem of urban sprawl as well as the successful determination of the urban space. T... more Infrastructure is critical to the sustainable development of the tourism sector in any society. This study assessed the availability of general infrastructure, tourism infrastructure and other social services in thirty randomly selected tourists’ destinations in South-South Nigeria. Data for the study were generated with the aid of infrastructure/social services checklist alongside oral interview with tourism officials in the area. Findings revealed a significant deficit in the number and types of infrastructure available as more than fifty percent of sampled tourist destinations lack the basic infrastructure such as tourist accommodation, transport infrastructure and health services. The sustainability of tourism in this area is in doubt except effort is made to engage the public-private partnership for the provision of critical infrastructure in these tourist destinations.

Field measurements were utilized to generate location data on the distance between septic tank and borehole water on twenty-two sampled points across eleven residential zones in Eket LGA of AKS. Water samples from the boreholes were analysed for physico-chemical and bacteriological properties. The chisquare test of goodness of fit was applied on the location data to examine their level of conformity with WHO baseline data; while the regression analysis was conducted to examine the effect of location of septic tanks on the quality of the borehole water. Findings showed massive non-conformity with WHO standards for minimum allowable distance between septic tank and borehole water points. Though no significant relationship was found between septic tank location and the physico-chemical properties of borehole water, the study found significant effect of location on the bacteriological load of borehole water in the area, as it degrades the quality of borehole water and also threatens population health. Intensive awareness campaign against improper location of sanitary facilities (septic tanks) alongside strict enforcement of town planning laws could go a long way in mitigating the situation.

A cross-sectional survey of 375 randomly selected residents was conducted in the five residential zones that make up the town using questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, frequency count and simple percentages were employed for data analysis. Results showed that respondents had an overwhelming positive disposition towards recreation with a high preference for outdoor recreation particularly "sitting out at open spaces, Parks and Plazas with drinks and photography". The further finding revealed the top 5 constraints to recreation including insecurity, poor access to recreational facilities, inadequate recreational facility, poor sanitation at recreational centres and high cost of recreational services. Findings re-echo the need to inaugurate community policing in order to strengthen security at recreational centres as well as enhancing access to recreation through citizens empowerment, infrastructure upgrade and expanding facilities for outdoor recreation.
