Wine translates qualities and experience of space and creation through the sense of taste and smell. Intoxicating impressions rediscovers the artistic nature of this craft through the space of a winery. It proposes an architecture of engagement. Impressionist painting offers an immersive representation of the qualities and atmosphere of space. This immersive effect creates an engagement of the viewer's imagination within the depicted scene. The painting's execution is based on both science and art through the representation of the intangible. This exploration resulted in testing architectural concepts of 'dissipation of light' and 'blurring of boundaries' to enhance the architectural experience to engage the imagination of the inhabitant. From these concepts, architecture allows the inhabiting of intangible qualities. The landscape pres...

The author, a mental health professional and a dance movement therapist with more than 12 years working experience in Haiti, encountered numerous anecdotal reports of physical illness and psychological distress amongst rescue and recovery workers, humanitarian aid workers, and others. This ¢eld report describes a sta¡ support programme in Haiti that consisted of three phases: 1) psychological ¢rst aid; 2) needs and resource assessment and training of a local sta¡ support team; and 3) team building, ongoing training and mentoring. While sta¡ support has been ' on our radar' for 20 years, the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake may be a pivotal event in terms of putting the issue front and centre for both local nongovernmental organisations and international nongovernmental organisations. The Haitian experience provides important lessons for the future of sta¡ support in humanitarian situations. The author argues that sta¡ support needs to be an integral part of all international humanitarian programming.

We set out to elicit Haitians' views on its effects to guide the development of interventions. In March 2006 we studied a population in the slum area of Cap-Haitien, Haiti's second largest city, and the nearby towns of Milot and Limbe. A convenience sample of adults was asked to free list all current problems affecting victims of organized violence. Two major categories emerged: psychological problems and financial problems. The psychological problems of "feeling startled and loss of self control," "sadness/grief," "continuing to suffer from reliving/reexperiencing past events," "problems in the head/mental problems," "deep suffering in the heart," and "thinking too much" emerged as themes from key-informant interviews. These may correspond to constructs of depression, dysthymia, and anxiety disorders including posttraumatic stress disor...

While the Office of Refugee Resettlement requires a health screening of refugees resettled in the United States, guidelines for mental health are less clear. The complex interaction of refugee trauma, the impact of acculturative stress, and refugee cultural frameworks has made screening and diagnosis difficult. This chapter presents a set of considerations for screening refugees and an overview of the most useful and effective tools for screening. Considerations explored in the chapter include managing communication issues, language and cultural barriers and descriptions of symptoms that do not fit easily into a Western medical context. The chapter also gives practical information and suggestions that will aid providers in the screening process including how to engage and more effectively screen refugee patients. Although there is limited empirical research of screening tools for refugees, the chapter reviews the use of the Vietnamese Depression Scale (VDS), the Harvard Trauma Questionnaire (HTQ), the 15-item Health Leaflet (HL), the Posttraumatic Symptom Scale-Self Report (PSS-SR), and the Hopkins Symptom Checklist-25 (HSCL-25). The chapter concludes with a more extensive review of the development and use of the Refugee Health Screener-15 (RHS-15).
