Design/methodology/approach – A literature review on learning and lean management literatures was carried out to design the methodology. Then, a case study methodology was used to test the framework. Findings – The methodology permitted to asses learning processes and course contents of educational dynamics carried out in model factories and to theoretically ground such learning processes. The test showed that learning lean management is supported through a complete coverage of the eight phases of the learning path. Research limitations/implications – The methodology contributes to the literatures of lean management and experiential learning, proposing a methodology of assessment. Part of the framework could also be applied to other disciplines. Practical implications – The methodology could be...

We present a theoretical framework that builds upon the idea of product modularisation as a knowledge management tool enabling community collaboration. The framework consists of a community meta-model and a product meta-model; some mechanisms enabling collective innovation are also presented as part of the framework. We then apply the theoretical framework to the real case of a high-performance human powered watercraft showing how the community was able to innovate the artefact evolving its modular architecture.

In this paper we want to suggest how the basic concepts of complexity theory and business and innovation ecosystem can inspire and guide the design of a web platform to support innovative and collaborative process of European SMEs. More specifically, we have highlighted the power of modularity (Baldwin and Clark, 2000) towards the design of new products, services and business models, which potential has been already only partially exploited. The innovation led by an eco-systemic vision and the systemic assumption of the modularity principle are therefore proposed as the self-organization and self-poiesis enablers of collaborative network.

The model considers the following elements: competitive advantages, performances of the operation system (as sources of competitive advantages) and the four macrophases of the so called operation value chain: design, purchasing, production and distribution. The study of the implications on production strategy deriving from globalization is carried out using three groups of strategic decision categories: organization and management, management systems, technologies. The cross between the three groups of strategic decision categories and the four operation macrophases identifies twelve areas of opportunities and decisions for the realization of global type strategies. The proposed model makes it possible to identify the emergence of three paradigms in global industries regarding performances and behaviour of companies: time and cost compression, agreements and coalitions, transfer.

The authors, comparing the evolution of two industrial districts, analyse the variables that determine or impede the formation of strong linked buyer-suppliers systems, influence the network stability and fashion the logistic pipeline mapping and management. Three central propositions are discussed: (a) the setting up of a supply network prncem is connected to the presence of operational interdependencies between the units of the supply chain; (b) the stability and effectiveness of a supply network is closely bound to the ability, on the part of the core-firm, to plan the governance structure of the supply relationship; and (c) the product structure and the nature of the process influence the networking process.

In particular, the main purpose of this paper is the i nvestigation of the variables that determine the use and success of information systems supporting Operations Management. In order to reach the abovementioned objective a literature review on measurement models of IS success has been carried out. The literature review has been performed analyzing 141 papers published in the period 1973-2005. The theories and models identified for determine the IS success can be organized into three main research streams: − Technology acceptance − Task-technology Fit − IS Success The ma in findings of the research are: − Identification of the factors that determine the success of IS − Recognition of the analogies and discrepancies between the models or theories identified − Proposal of a theoretical model based on the abovementioned findings.

The authors explore accelerators practices and tools in sustaining start-ups and increasing survival probability in their innovation process, with the aim of addressing the following research question: how can start-ups benefit from participation in an accelerator programme from an open innovation perspective? Design/methodology/approach A review of the literature on start-up successes and failures and on major practices in the open innovation paradigm was carried out, delineating them in the context of accelerators. Given the absence of literature on accelerator practices for supporting start-ups, and aiming at a comprehensive understanding of how the open environment within the accelerator influences a start-up’s survival (or even success) by mitigating the probability of failure, the authors conducted an exploratory case stu...

Complexity is not only due to the external environment (market and/or technological turbulence) but also to the internal configuration and specificities. A recent stream of studies in organizational literature suggested that organizations should develop and deploy specific capabilities for facing complexity, namely dynamic capabilities. This means becoming more flexible. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – This paper proposes four main capabilities to face four dimensions of complexity. It then investigates if it is more appropriate to focus on a specific capability when facing higher levels of a specific dimension of complexity. The research methodology is a multiple case study in seven different organizational units of the same super-store corporate. Findings – Data showed some important results. First of all, internal complexity is unit specific rather than corporate o...

The aim of this paper is to analyse how KM projects can contribute to the development of dynamic capabilities; the study is based on four case studies of KM projects implemented by medium size enterprises. Results show that under some conditions KM projects can give an important contribution to the development of dynamic capabilities for both optimization and innovation activities.
