It manifests in various forms and is being committed by individuals, political thugs and of recent, armed groups. The study has assessed the recent trends in criminality with the objectives of identifying the hot spots of criminality and the perpetrators of crime, the trends, causes and its implication for state development. The study also looked at the implications of criminality to the state's development and proffered strategies to curb it. The study was exploratory and was conducted using existing literature as its secondary source of data. Hence, data were collected from books, journals, the internet, and security reports. Unstructured interviews with the public, state security operatives, the Police Community Relation Committee, voluntary security operatives, the vigilante formed the sources of primary data. Data collected were analyzed leading to logical deductions and recommendations. The results were presented quantitatively using tables and bar charts. The results revealed that high level poverty, unemployment, drug abuse are the contributing factors to criminality in the study area. The study revealed also that the trend in criminality in the last few months were theft, armed robbery, insurgency, communal conflicts and kidnapping. The study recommends a combination of training in entrepreneurship, employment of youths, creation of security outpost in flash point areas, clamp down on illicit drug peddlers and consumers and quick dispensation of justice and public enlightenment among other ways to curb the menace of criminality.

General strain theory and social bond theory were, adopted as the theoretical frame of the study. While the former explains how blocked opportunities among the lower class youths lead to delinquency, and consequently, to insecurity in the society, the latter explains how weakened bond to conventional social institutions reduces social control of young persons, and subsequently, leading to insecurity in the society. Thus, abuse of children will have a long term effect and elicit deprivation that can later be, expressed through delinquency or crime. The article principally relied on secondary data. The article concludes that child abuse has many social and psychological consequences and they are associated to security challenges in Nigeria. As differently indicated by the data cited in this article, most of the city hooligans, members of urban gangs, Boko Haram and other forms of criminal gangs are ...

In the present study, the response spectra for Miri district, in Sarawak, has been obtained by using 1-D equivalent linear site response analysis at 114 borehole locations. All the borehole sites are classified based on average shear wave velocity (Vs30) as per Malaysia National Annex to Eurocode 8 (MNA-EC8) site classifications using the geotechnical relationship. In this study, the input motion was selected from Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research (PEER-NGA) online database compatible with target response spectra of Sarawak at engineering bedrock by considering the seismic hazard map for 2475 years as return period and by following the 475 years return period as shown in (MNA-EC8). From the results of this study, it was found that the maximum response spectral acceleration (response spectra with 5% damping) is 2.25 g, 3.25 g and 1.7 g at the ground surface for MNA-EC8 site...

However, regardless of quality, rivers the world over supply substantial volume of water for man’s diverse uses. Rivers in form of drainage basin is more than a geomopologic unit, it is also a hydranlic and hydrological unit having a unifying factor in water as a natural resource. A river channel with or without water possessess a utility that contributes to the livelihood of the people within and beyond it.This paper assess the contribution of Moron River Basin situated in the north-east part of Gombe to the livelihood of the communities residing within the basin. The work observed the uses of river system in the work of multidisplinary analysis of the Lake Chad Basin by Neitherland and Bene in 2002 and compared it with that of Morom River Basin in order to explore areas of similirities and more importantly to show case how Morom River Basin is put to use to alliviate poverty. The objectives of this study, therefore, were to identify the institutional framework for rural water management and the contributions of rural water end users in managing their water supply points. The study utilized both primary and secondary data sources. Using a purposive sampling technique, fifty (50) rural communities were identified and administered with structured questionnaire which were complemented with personal interviews, focus group discussion, field observations and measurements. The study findings revealed that institutional arrangements for operation and maintenance of water issues have been top-bottom management strategy as against the supply driven norm where end users determine the outcome decision on water issues. The stu...

In an academic sphere today modernity theory relies on the key idea of rationalization to give explanation on the distinctiveness of the modern societies. The rationales for creating fresh federal and state capital cities in the third world especially Nigeria is to accomplish national ambition of a modern capital as a sign of state identity. As a consequence states aspire to be seen as coming of age in terms of development or “catching up with the west”. Improvement in quality of urban life in the course of provision of housing and basic services, and healthier environment is very important aspect of being modern and that is why this paper examined the degree of modernity of residential areas in Bauchi Metropolis to see how areas have improved and modernised in order to keep phase with modernity. The paper specifically assessed the nature of the build up env...

To improve the accuracy of these assays, care must be taken to prevent premature activation or inactivation of gametocytes before they are fed to mosquitoes. This can be challenging in the field where infected individuals and insectary facilities are sometimes very far apart. In this study, a simple, reliable, field applicable method is presented for storage and transport of gametocyte infected blood using a thermos flask. Methods The optimal storage conditions for maintaining the transmissibility of gametocytes were determined initially using cultured Plasmodium falciparum gametocytes in standard membrane feeding assays (SMFAs). The impact of both the internal thermos water temperature (35.5 to 37.8 °C), and the external environmental temperature (room temperature to 42 °C) during long-term (4 h) storage, and the impact of short-term (15...

The reviewed literature are categorised into three groups: literature related to developed countries, literature related to developing countries, and literature related to group countries. Moreover, the various empirical studies reviewed show mixed results and conclusions. In some studies, strong positive relationships are found to exist between stock returns and macroeconomic fundamentals and in some the relationship is a bit weak. Other researches report different results. This mixture of findings and conclusions emanates from differences in methodology, variables used and the period of study. There is also disparity in study area that fundamentally affects the behaviour of the macroeconomic variables.

To monitor its efficacy, between August 2011 and November 2014, children with uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria were treated with AL and followed up for 42 days. A total of 463 subjects were enrolled in three sites (246 in Senegal, 97 in Mali, and 120 in Gambia). No early treatment failure was observed and malaria infection cleared in all patients by day 3. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-adjusted adequate clinical and parasitological response (ACPR) was 100% in Mali, and the Gambia, and 98.8% in Senegal. However, without PCR adjustment, ACPR was 89.4% overall; 91.5% in Mali, 98.8% in Senegal, and 64.3% in the Gambia (the lower value in the Gambia attributed to poor compliance of the full antimalarial course). However, pfmdr1 mutations were prevalent in Senegal and a decrease in parasite sensitivity to artesunate and lumefantrine (as measured by ...

In this regard, the recovery of gold from CCBs has attracted great interest. In this work, we report the recovery of gold from CCBs with different reductants. The CCBs were first crushed mechanically to obtain particles with sizes less than 0.1 mm. The powders were then leached with nitric acid to remove undesired metals. The remaining was then treated with aqua regia to dissolve gold ion. The dissolved gold was then precipitated from the leachate with hydrazine, ferrous sulfate or oxalic acid and the effect of these reductants on the recovery of gold was studied. We were able to recover more than 99% of gold from CCBs with purity of about 99.5%.
