The rationale for the study was to establish the extent to which undergraduate students understand issues related to HIV/ AIDS. The study was conducted using a survey research design. The sample was made up of 500 undergraduate students 255 males and 245 females . A questionnaire was used to collect the data . Simple percentage was used to analyse the data . Findings revealed that students had a lot of accurate factual information about HIV/AIDS but at the same time they had some misconceptions. It was recommended that relevant stakeholders facilitate HIV/AIDS awareness and necessary attitude change among students both theoretically and practically. The Implications for Counselling were also stated. Background to the Study HIV I AIDS not only attacks individuals, it also attacks systems. Until recently, HIV I AIDS has been perceived primarily as a health problem, which can be contained by effective health education programs. But the deadly virus has not been contained and continues to spread so widely that it is now having a profound adverse impact on communities and institutions. Government's health-focused HIV I AIDS plans have failed to consider what must be done when the disease is out of control and state systems are themselves threatened. The pandemic threatens everyone in Africa as well as in many other parts of the world. HIV kills at least a third of the young men and women in countries where it has its firmest hold, and in some places up to two-thirds. Despite * The authors are from the Department of Educational Foundations, University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos, Nigeria. UNDERGRADUATE STIJDENTS' PERCEPTIONS OF THE CAUSES AND EFFECTS.. . 337 millennia o{ epidemics, WCl.r and famine, never before in history have we experienced such an alarming rate of death among young adults of both sexes and from all walks of life. HIV I AIDS is changing the world in unprecedented ways. It attacks individuals, alters populations and challenges systems. It kills ten times more people per year than war and society's young adults suffer disproportionately (UNAIDS, 2000). According to UNICEF (2000), nearly one third of all people with HIV I AIDS are between the ages of 15 and 24 years. In the year 2000, 500,000 children died of AIDS, bringing the total of children's deaths to date to 4.3 million. Every minute, six young people under the age of 25 are infected with the virus. In Nigeria the first case of HIV was reported in1986 (JAAIDS, 2003). Since then the prevalence has risen steadily over the years-1.8 per cent in 1993; 4.5 per cent in 1996; 5.4 per cent in 1999; and 5.8 per cent in 2001. The prevalence towards the end of 2001 represents a figure of about 3.5 million Nigerians already infected with HIV. The highest prevalence, however, is in the age group of 15-24 years, which are the most reproductive and economically productive segments (JAAIDS, 2003). The table below shows that Nigeria has recorded a rather high prevalence of HIV I AIDS cases since 1986 when the first case was reported in a 13-year-old girl. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study and the population of the study consisted of all the children in public primary schools and in junior secondary schools within Lagos state of Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique was adopted for the study. Random samples of twenty five children were picked from each of the sixteen schools selected. This gives a total 400 participants that were used for the study. Experts in Sociology, measurement and evaluation certified the content validity of the questionnaire, while the co-efficient of the reliability of the four sections of the questionnaire were ascertained to be 0.63; 0.68; 0.66 and 0.73, respectively for sections A,B,C and D. The conception, incubation and delivery of any national development policy, as well as the reform and implementation of extant policies, are driven by the quality of teachers and their products within a functional educational system. Indeed, national and global models of development, including the millennium development goals revolve round the frames of quality education, beginning with teacher education. It is therefore important to have functional teacher education systems in Africa to help its citizens explore the networking of the world as a global village. This is achievable through a systematic mobilization of national resources and visible commitment to the development of a modernized cadre of scientific and technological manpower. This book, Teacher Education Systems in Africa in the Digital Era is a rich exposition of theories and praxes essential for the development of teacher education in Africa. The book has immense benefits for teachers, teacher trainers, funding agencies, other stakeholders and policy makers

Four research questions were raised and four hypotheses were tested. The descriptive research design was adopted for the study. A total of 200 participants were selected from 10 public primary schools and 10 private primary schools within Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government area of Lagos, Nigeria using simple random sampling technique. The research instrument used was a four point Likert Rating Scale Questionnaire type. Data analysis were done using descriptive statistics of frequency counts and percentage to answer the research questions, while the hypotheses formulated were tested using Chi-square and independent t-test statistical tool at 0.05 level of significance. All the hypotheses tested were rejected. Based on the result from the findings of this study, it was concluded that there is significant influence of educated mother on their children academic performance and well-being and that there is significant difference between academic performance, well-being of pupils from educated and uneducated mothers. Children living with mothers who have low educational attainment experience less academic guidance, support and success. Hence, mothers' level of education is a sin qua non to their children well-being and academic pursuit. It was recommended that parents who are not educated or have low educational qualifications should endeavour to allow their children to attend summer coaching provided or secure services of home tutor for their children to complement the regular school programmes and that government and corporate institutions should increase salaries of parents in line with economic situations, to enable parents meet the educational needs of their children.

This recognition has formed the basis for investment in the development of ICT capacity in higher education institutions (HEIs) in Nigeria. After years of this investment, this study investigated the reach and utilisation of ICT facilities in HEIs .in the country. The findings were that availability of ICT facilities, notably mobile phones and the internet, is widespread. However, these have not been mainstreamed into teaching and learning processes. This is blamed on gaps in funding and training. Recommendations for the better deployment of ICT as an aid in teaching are made.

In carrying out the study, the descriptive research design was used; four research questions and four null hypotheses were postulated to give direction. Researcher’s self-designed questionnaire (SHASAQ) was used to assess the respondents’ opinion while 350 well-completed set of the questionnaire were collected from the respondents. Data collected were analyzed using simple mean, percentage, standard deviation, T-test, Pearson Moment Correlation and Chi-square statistical tools and the hypotheses were tested on 0.05 level of significance. After analyzing the data gathered, it was revealed that there are more female adolescent hawkers than male adolescent hawkers in Mushin Local Government area of Lagos State. Adolescents have the bad disposition towards street hawking in Mushin Local Government area of Lagos State; there is a significant relationship between adolescent social behavior and academic behavior, and gender is a significant factor in social adjustment of street hawkers. It was suggested that the government and the school administrators provide adequate educational scheme arrangement for students from the poor socio-economic background who do not often have time to review school activities at home. As a result of street hawking and that government should ensure that the number of adolescents who partake in street hawking is reduced by making laws to ban street hawking so that the rate of drop out can be reduced. It is however recommended that the study is replicated by other researchers using different location and environment and also to confirm or refute its validity and to expand the scope of work previously done.
