This study was conducted with the main aim of assessing the factors that influences the amount of household consumption of electricity in Bauchi state, Nigeria. About 750 households were selected using cluster area sampling out of which 539 responses were analyses. OLS regression model was estimated to examine the impact of the household's socioeconomic and demographic characteristics on their electricity use and consumption. The result indicates that level of education of the household head, living in the urban areas of Bauchi State, price of firewood and number of energy use devices at home, have positive significant impact on the household use of electricity. On the other hand, marital status was found to have a negative impact on the electricity expenditure, the households that are headed by a married person have less expenditure on electricity than otherwise. The study recommends policies that ensure increase in the level of education and turning some rural areas into urban areas will encourage adoption and use of electricity as a main source of household energy thereby reducing the rate of using traditional biomass energy.

Indeed one-third of the increase in cereal production worldwide has been attributed to fertiliser related factors. This paper reviews and synthesises various literature and empirical studies on fertiliser demand. The paper has shown that different models have been used by previous studies in analysing determinants of fertiliser demand or adoption, depending on the objective of a particular study. The paper also, has shown that differences in the areas under previous studies have led to differences in conclusions, mainly because of the variations of the socioeconomic , geographical, environmental and other climatic factors. The paper conclude that there is a need for more studies on fertiliser demand each study to concentrate its analysis on a specific area or community so as to come up with suggestions and policies suitable for each community in order to improve fertiliser use by farmers so as to raise the level of agricultural productivity in developing countries.

A total sample of 539 household responses were analysed, which were selected using cluster area sampling. The analysis indicates that the average monthly household income is USD 220, and the average monthly firewood consumption per household is about 35 bundles. Moreover, about 70% of the respondents argued that they use firewood as their main source of cooking fuel. For the lighting source of energy, 65% of the households argued that they use electricity as their main source of lighting. Additionally, the correlation analysis indicates that income has a positive relationship with the quantity of energy consumption, while there is a negative relationship between the price of a particular source of energy and its consumption. The study suggests that there is a need of a good policy that will reduce the households much dependence on firewood to other cleaner sources of energy.

This study aims to model the determinants of credit supplied to farmers by microfinance banks. A total of 835 households and 45 microfinance banks were utilized as the samples of the study. The result of the Tobit model shows that the entrepreneurial ability of the farmers, having an account with the bank, profits from loan and the number of marketing staff of the banks have positive impacts on loan supply. Contrarily, the higher the distance of customers from the banks, the lower the intensity of loan supply. The study recommends that pro-poor credit policies are required for the establishment of new agencies and financial institutions devoted to agricultural sector. Such financial agencies should be established closer to farmers especially those in remote areas. Moreover, policies should focus on rural development through the activities that could generate off-seasonal employment.

This study was conducted with main aim of analysing the socio-economic factors influencing the quantity of firewood consumption in Bauchi state, Nigeria. A total of 750 households were selected out of which responses from 539 households were analysed. Ordinary Least Square (OLS) regression model was used as the tool of data analysis. The result indicates that household head being male and the number of rooms in the home have positive impact on the quantity of firewood consumption. On the other hand, price of firewood and kerosene as well as the level of education of the household head; have negative impacts on the quantity of firewood consumption. Therefore, policies of increasing the cost of obtaining firewood and mass awareness and education will help to reduce the extent of firewood use in Bauchi state, Nigeria.

The critical issues to raise here are how can these households be encouraged to change their energy consumption behavior? What are the factors that cause the rampant use of biomass fuel in developing countries? How and to what extent can these factors be manipulated so that households in developing countries are encouraged to adopt clean energy fuel an alternative to the most widely used biomass fuel? Therefore, this chapter tries to find answer to the above questions raised, by carrying out an in depth analysis of households’ use of biomass fuel in developing countries using Bauchi State, Nigeria, as the case study. Cluster area sampling technique was utilized to generate the various responses, where a total number of 539 respondents were analyzed. Probit regression model was estimated to analyse the factors that influence modern inputs adoption. On the other hand, OLS, Poisson and instrumental variable regression models were used to estimate the efficiency of modern inputs adoption and consumption at farm level. The estimated OLS model indicates that additional use of 1 bag of fertiliser, increases the level of productivity by about 5.4%. Similarly, the estimated Poisson model indicates that an additional 1 bag of fertiliser use on a farm increases the productivity per hectare by about 4.5%. Meanwhile, the estimated 2SLS model shows that a 1% increase in the amount of fertiliser use increases the level of output productivity by about 0.34%. Furthermore, the method adopted by farmers on how to use modern agricultural inputs has a significant influence on the level of output production. Modern method of fertiliser application improves the level of output production. Government can use this medium to improve the rate of input use by rural farmers via agricultural schemes that will introduce the farmers to and maintain the modern techniques of farming. Additionally, farmers need to be exposed to skills and training on some off-farm jobs to raise their income to be able to afford the recommended amount of fertiliser. Lastly, the adoption of policies that will encourage the rate of farmers' contact with extension agents will improve the manner of fertiliser utilisation which in turn increases the level of efficiency.

According to the relative income hypothesis, consumption behavior of households does not depend s... more According to the relative income hypothesis, consumption behavior of households does not depend solely on their absolute income but also relatively on other peoples' income and consumption behavior. Households try to maintain their consumption pattern in such a way to meet the average consumption standard of their community. This study was conducted with the major aim of testing the validity of this axiom in relation to the household energy choice and consumption in the context of developing countries. In total, 540 households were utilized as the samples of the study. The study used both statistical and econometric (Verme model) tools. Both the cooking and lighting aspects of household energy sources were examined separately. The study found that all the various tests methods confirmed the validity of the axiom of relative income hypothesis in relation to household energy choice and consumption. Therefore, if the policy makers of developing areas take this aspect into consideration, it will simplify the process of making and implementing policies for shifting households away from using traditional biomass energy sources to modern, clean sources of energy.

This study was conducted with the main aim of assessing the factors that influence household lighting fuel choice and consumption in developing areas. To achieve this objective, samples were selected using a cluster area sampling technique, whereby a total of 539 samples were utilised. The estimated multinomial logit model for the lighting fuel choice indicates that age of the household head, income level, urban location, number of rooms and the availability of electricity have positive impacts on the probability of electricity adoption. Therefore, a sound policy that ensures availability of cheap electricity to households will have a strong and wider impact on more households that will move towards the use of the modern lighting source. Additionally, raising incomes and campaign awareness will encourage households to shift away from the use of the traditional lighting source, which is full of pollution, towards a modern source of lighting.

The major aim of this study was to empirically examine how to minimise carbon emissions (CO 2) in Malaysia which are mainly caused by energy production, fossil fuel consumption, population density and economic growth. The study adopted the method of autoregressive distributed lag bound testing approach to analyse the data for the period 1971-2011. The study found that economic growth in Malaysia has a direct relationship with CO 2 emissions in both the short run and the long run. Similarly, there is a positive relationship between fossil fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions over the same period. Population density was found to have positive impacts on CO 2 emissions. Contrarily, the relationship between the activities of energy production and pollution is negative in the long run. The study recommends that a targeted GDP growth rate should be set with the consideration to avoid more environmental pollution. In addition, the positive impact of fossil fuel consumption on the environmental pollution implies that there is a need to make and implement policies that will encourage the use of public transportation system more than private transportations. That is, the unnecessary use of private vehicles should be discouraged in order to reduce the extent of fossil fuel consumption.
