Since the year 2001, I have worked at various capacities and academic levels including ACF (Action Contre La Faim - France), Jimma University, College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine (JUCAVM) as well as at Addis Ababa University, College of Veterinary Medicine and Agriculture. I have good experience and knowledge in leading relief and development job and departmental offices at university level. I am currently working as head of the VTH (Veterinary Teaching Hospital) at Addis Ababa University. Previously I had also lead similar academic offices like the Continuous and Distance Education (CDE) office and the Biomedical Science Departments of JUCAVM (Jimma University, College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine). I have great ability and experience to perform office procedures in a timely and masterful manner. I have MVSc degree from Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University and a DVM degree from AAU, CVMA. Currently, I am working on a project benefiting the local community through free rabies vaccination, dog deworming, stray dog spay and neutering as well as public education on Rabies.

Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is endemic and has a substantial impact on the livestock sector in Ethi... more Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is endemic and has a substantial impact on the livestock sector in Ethiopia and other low and middle-income countries (LMICs). With a national emphasis on dairy farm intensification to boost milk production and spur economic growth, the incidence of bTB is anticipated to rise. However, Ethiopia, like other LMICs, lacks a comprehensive national bTB control strategy due to the economic and social infeasibility of traditional test-and-cull (TC) approaches. To inform the development of such a strategy, we evaluated the effectiveness and feasibility of TC and testand-segregation (TSg) strategies for bTB control on Ethiopian dairy farms. A TC approach was used at Farm A [N = 62; comparative cervical test (CCT) > 4 mm, starting prevalence 11.3%] while TSg was implemented at Farm B (N = 45; CCT > 4 mm, prevalence 22.2%), with testing intervals of 2-4 months. Both strategies achieved a reduction in bTB prevalence to 0%, requiring seven rounds of TC over 18 months at Farm A, and five rounds of TSg over 12 months at Farm B's negative herd. The results show that adopting more sensitive thresholds [CCT > 0 mm or single cervical test (SCT) > 2 mm] during later rounds was pivotal in identifying and managing previously undetected infections, emphasizing the critical need for optimized diagnostic thresholds. Cost analysis revealed that TC was approximately twice as expensive as TSg, primarily due to testing, labor, and cow losses in TC, versus construction of new facilities and additional labor for TSg. This underscores the economic and logistical challenges of bTB management in resource-limited settings. Taken together, our study highlights an urgent need for the exploration of alternative approaches including TSg and or vaccination to mitigate within herd transmission and enable implementation of bTB control in regions where TC is not feasible.

Post-slaughter survey data collected over a period of 15 years (1985-1999) by the Faculty of Vete... more Post-slaughter survey data collected over a period of 15 years (1985-1999) by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FVM), Addis Ababa University (AAU) were used as a basis for the analysis of estimation of the economic significance of bovine hydatidosis in Ethiopia. The analysis output revealed a 35.15% mean annual prevalence of bovine hydatidosis. The total estimated economic loss from organ condemnation, carcass weight and milk yield decrease amounts to 1,691,266,200 ETB (101,203,734 USD). This is equivalent to a loss of 475.40 ETB (28.45 USD) per every infected slaughtered cattle and 249.00 ETB (14.90 USD) per every infected milking cow. The results of the present study showed that hydatidosis is a highly prevalent cattle disease in Ethiopia with considerable direct and indirect economic losses. The magnitude of loss per infected subject warrants the need to mount an integrated nationwide hydatidosis control program involving public education, canine health care, proper handling and disposal of infected organs, stray dog population management and institution of strict standard operating procedures (SOPs) in slaughterhouses and public health legislative reinforcements. The authors recommend that hydatidosis control program should be designed and implemented in the context on 'One Health' initiative by integrating it with other zoonotic disease control program and in partnerships with animal and public health actors as well as other relevant stakeholders. .

Thus diagnostic imaging is a crucial tool required to confirm the diagnosis of urolithiasis in dogs presented with non-specific clinical signs of urogenital affection. Aim The aim of this study was to compare the capability of radiography and ultrasonography in detecting uroliths and concurrent urinary system abnormalities and to evaluate clinical, haematological and urinalysis findings of dogs affected with urolithiasis during the presentation. Methods Findings of signalment, history, physical and laboratory examination of blood and urine were performed and recorded. All dogs presented with complete or partial urinary obstruction, haematuria and renal failure were subjected to both radiographic and ultrasonographic evaluation. Uroliths were retrieved by a cystotomy, urethrotomy, and at necropsy from kidney failure cases confirming urolithiasis. Results The result revealed occult clinical haematuria in 56.5%, microscopic haematuria in 78.3% and dysuria/anuria in 34.8% of the affected dogs. Crystalluria is detected in seven (30.4%) of urolithiasis affected dogs. The total leukocyte count was significantly elevated (p≤0.05) in partially and completely obstructed dogs. Radiography diagnosed 19 of 23 urolithiasis cases in the urinary bladder (UB), 2 of 2 in the kidney and 12 of 13 in the urethra while ultrasonography diagnosed 17 of 23 urolithiasis cases in the UB and one in the urethra. From a total of 15 dogs presented with either neoplastic growth and/or cystitis concurrent with urolithiasis, ultrasound detected six while pneumocystogrpahy detected only one. Conclusion The study showed haematuria as the leading clinical sign of urolithiasis. Detection of urolithiasis and concurrent cystitis and/or urinary bladder growth increases when ultrasonography and radiography were employed together.

The present paper reviews and summarizes available data on the disease. Abattoir survey data collected over a period of 15 years (1985-1999) were analyzed to assess the infection prevalence of hydatidosis in domestic animals in three different agroecological zones of Ethiopia. Accordingly, 8036/22,863 (35.15%) cattle, 768/6518 (11.78%) sheep, 36/1753 (4.9%) goats, 70/417 (16.79%) camels and 0/150 (0%) pigs slaughtered in 21 different abattoirs located in various parts of the country were found harbouring hydatid cysts. A statistical discernible significant difference (p<0.001) was observed in the overall hydatidosis infection prevalence between the different species of animals, and in infection prevalence of bovine hydatidosis in the three agroecological zones where the slaughtered cattle were believed to originate from. Similarly, a statistically significant difference (p<0.01) in the prevalence of ovine hydatidosis was observed between mid-altitude and lowland agroecologies. Conversely, there was no significant difference (p>0.20) in the infection prevalence of caprine hydatidosis between mid-altitude and lowlands. The present study reconfirms that hydatid disease is widespread and highly prevalent in ruminant livestock in Ethiopia and warrants institution of a nationwide control measures. Considerations on experiences of other countries with respect to the economic benefits that hydatid disease control programs may bring to livestock producers and combining such efforts with other zoonosis control schemes in view of the 'one health' initiative is worthy for animal health planners and policy decision-makers. The paper also serves as a quick reference source on hydatidosis in the country and basis for future studies.

Study on the Prevalence of Major Trypanosomes Affecting Bovine in Tsetse Infested Asosa District of Benishangul Gumuz Regional State, Western Ethiopia

The study was conducted in Asosa district of Benishangul Gumuz Regional State to determine the pr... more The study was conducted in Asosa district of Benishangul Gumuz Regional State to determine the prevalence and identify different species of trypanosomes affecting cattle in the area known to be infested with tsetse flies. From a total of 384 randomly selected and examined cattle in six of the study area, 108 (28.1%) were positive. The prevalence was significantly higher (P<0.05) in older and poor body conditioned animals but didn't vary between sexes and peasant associations. The most common trypanosome species identified were T. congolense (72/108, 66.7%) followed by mixed T. vivax and T. congolense (21/108, 19.4%), T. vivax (10/108, 9.3%) and T. brucei (5/108, 4.6%). The proportional prevalence of T. congolense is significantly higher (P=0.000) than the other trypanosome species. The mean PCV values recorded were 20.6% in parasitaemic and 25% in aparasitaemic animals with a statistical significant difference (P<0.05). The notorious impact of bovine trypanosomosis on cattle productivity and the recorded high prevalence of the disease in the area with more pathogenic T. congolense as the dominant species validate the need for application of integrated control utilizing insecticide pour-on, odor-baited and insecticide impregnated targets and traps kindred with curative and prophylactic treatments of livestock with trypanocidal drugs.

The total sample size was determined to be 384, which was proportionally allocated to the studied PAs. The overall prevalence of Varroa destructor infestation recorded were 40% in the brood and 35% in adult honey bees. The rate of mite infestation in the brood and adult bees of the three peasant associations were 40%, 35% at Genfel, 42.7%, 37.8% at Adikisandid and 38%, 33% at Aynalem, respectively. Statistically no significant variation was observed in the prevalence of varroa infestation between brood and adult bees as well as among the three PAs (p > 0.05, ÷ =0.279). Bovine Hydatidosis: Prevalence and Economic Significance at Adigrat Municipal Abattoir, Northern Ethiopia

A cross sectional abattoir survey was conducted to determine the prevalence and economic importan... more A cross sectional abattoir survey was conducted to determine the prevalence and economic importance of bovine hydatidosis at Adigrat abattoir during the time extending from November to April months. A total of 384 randomly selected cattle slaughtered at Adigrat municipal abattoir were examined and 89 (23.18%) were found harboring the cyst. Bovine hydatidosis infection prevalence at Adigrat abattoir was significantly higher in cattle older than five years and with poor body condition (P<0.05). The lung was the most commonly affected organ followed by liver, heart, kidney and spleen. A total of 198 hydatid cysts collected from the lung, liver, kidney, heart and spleen were also assessed for size, where 83(41.92%) were small (< 6 ml), 45 (22.73%), medium (6-12 ml) and large (> 12 ml) 70 (35.35%) whereas the fertility test showed 41(20.71%) to be fertile, 98 (49.49%) sterile and 59 (29.80%) calcified. The present study reconfirms that hydatid disease is widespread and highly prevalent in ruminant livestock in Ethiopia and warrants institution of a nationwide control measures. Considerations on experiences of other countries with respect to the economic benefits that hydatid disease control programs may bring to livestock producers and combining such efforts with other zoonosis control schemes in view of the 'one health' initiative is worthy for animal health planners and policy decision-makers. The paper also serves as a quick reference source on hydatidosis in the country and basis for future studies.

Study on the Prevalence of Major Trypanosomes Affecting Bovine in Tsetse Infested Asosa District of Benishangul Gumuz Regional State, Western Ethiopia

The study was conducted in Asosa district of Benishangul Gumuz Regional State to determine the pr... more The study was conducted in Asosa district of Benishangul Gumuz Regional State to determine the prevalence and identify different species of trypanosomes affecting cattle in the area known to be infested with tsetse flies. From a total of 384 randomly selected and examined cattle in six of the study area, 108 (28.1%) were positive. The prevalence was significantly higher (P<0.05) in older and poor body conditioned animals but didn't vary between sexes and peasant associations. The most common trypanosome species identified were T. congolense (72/108, 66.7%) followed by mixed T. vivax and T. congolense (21/108, 19.4%), T. vivax (10/108, 9.3%) and T. brucei (5/108, 4.6%). The proportional prevalence of T. congolense is significantly higher (P=0.000) than the other trypanosome species. The mean PCV values recorded were 20.6% in parasitaemic and 25% in aparasitaemic animals with a statistical significant difference (P<0.05). The notorious impact of bovine trypanosomosis on cattle productivity and the recorded high prevalence of the disease in the area with more pathogenic T. congolense as the dominant species validate the need for application of integrated control utilizing insecticide pour-on, odor-baited and insecticide impregnated targets and traps kindred with curative and prophylactic treatments of livestock with trypanocidal drugs.

The total sample size was determined to be 384, which was proportionally allocated to the studied PAs. The overall prevalence of Varroa destructor infestation recorded were 40% in the brood and 35% in adult honey bees. The rate of mite infestation in the brood and adult bees of the three peasant associations were 40%, 35% at Genfel, 42.7%, 37.8% at Adikisandid and 38%, 33% at Aynalem, respectively. A total of 384 randomly selected cattle slaughtered at Adigrat municipal abattoir were examined and 89 (23.18%) were found harboring the cyst. Bovine hydatidosis infection prevalence at Adigrat abattoir was significantly higher in cattle older than five years and with poor body condition (P<0.05). The lung was the most commonly affected organ followed by liver, heart, kidney and spleen. A total of 198 hydatid cysts collected from the lung, liver, kidney, heart and spleen were also assessed for size, where 83(41.92%) were small (< 6 ml), 45 (22.73%), medium (6-12 ml) and large (> 12 ml) 70 (35.35%) whereas the fertility test showed 41(20.71%) to be fertile, 98 (49.49%) sterile and 59 (29.80%) calcified.
