The study sample included 168 Emirati second grade students (87 males and 81 females). One hundred forty-four words were randomly selected from the Arabic reading curriculum. Those words were classified into lexical categories as nouns (45%), verbs (34%), adjectives and adverbs (10%), and functional words (i.e., prepositions and conjunctions; 11%). They were also classified into three levels of linguistic difficulty (i.e., easy, difficult, and very difficult) according to their morphological complexity. The results revealed that reading difficulties may be the result of a threefold interrelated paradigm: the difficulty level of the words (i.e., morphological complexity), the lexical category (i.e., nouns, verbs, adjective and adverbs, and prepositions and conjunctions), and the pattern of the reading error (e.g., omission of a letter or a syllable and reading the geminated letter as ingeminated).

These teaching approaches were a conventional teaching method, a modified version of reciprocal teaching, and a key word strategy. Two groups of Emirati students were recruited: Group 1 (24 typical female, age range= 7.8-12 years) and Group 2 (12 students with mental handicap, age range= 11-18 years). Detailed procedures were outlined beforehand and implemented by the teachers. Statistical analyses (MANOVA) revealed that there were significant differences in group 1 students' achievement on the three teaching methods, F(2,46) = 18.37, P< .001.The Tukey (HSD) follow-up procedure revealed that there were significant differences at the .05 level between students' performance on method 1 (the conventional teaching method) and their performance on method 2 (the reciprocal teaching method) and method 3 (the key word strategy); however, the Tukey test did not reveal a significant difference between students' performance on method 2 and their performance on method 3. The MANOVA revealed that there were no significant differences in group 2 (students with mental handicap) students' achievement on the three teaching methods F (2,22) = 1.99, p< .160. That is, the apparent differences in students' achievement are not large enough to yield statistically significant differences. This means that the modified reciprocal

The purpose of the study was to explore Emirati teachers’ perceptions of voice handicap and to analyze their acoustic characteristics to determine whether acoustic measures of teachers’ voice would verify their perceptions of voice handicap. Methods. 66 Emirati school teachers (33 males and 33 females, with different years of teaching experience and age) and 100 control participants (50 males and 50 females) underwent vocal assessment that included the Voice Handicap Index (VHI-Arab) and acoustic measures (F0, Jitter%, Shimmer%, SNR). Results. Significant differences between the teachers’ group scores and the control group scores on the following subscales of VHI-Arab: physical (p = 0.006), emotional (p = 0.004)) and in the total score of the test (p = 0.002) were tested. No significant differences were found among teachers in the three VHI subscales, and the total score regarding gender (functional p = 0.307; physical p = 0.341; emotional p = 0.126; and total p = 0.184)...

Self-efficacy was measured by two scales, which differed in levels of specificity—Category Specific and Task Specific. Motivation was measured through four sub-constructs of motivation— Amotivation, External Regulation, Introjected Regulation, and Intrinsic Motivation. A total of 287 fifth grade students with an average age of 10.3 years were randomly selected to participate in this study. The multiple regression model showed that the six predictors were able to explain together high percentage (32%) of the variance of mathematics achievement. Also the results indicated that the best three predictors were Task Specific, External Regulation, and Intrinsic Regulation. When conducting the regression model across gender, the results showed that 30% of the variance in mathemat...

Parents’ outcomes in early intervention for children with special educational needs and disabilit... more Parents’ outcomes in early intervention for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) have not received close study in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). In pursuit of this goal, a quantitative method used to collect quantitative data and investigate parents’ outcomes. Therefore, the family outcomes survey (FOS) was utilised to collect data from parents whose children were served in four rehabilitation centres across the UAE. Descriptive statistics, the independent t-test, and one-way ANOVA were used to address the main research question and examine the study hypotheses. The results of the study indicated high parent outcomes in two areas: understanding the child’s needs and providing support; meanwhile, other outcomes did not achieve the cut-off score. Additionally, statistical differences were found among outcomes in relation to the family services programme, type of disability (in favour of parents of children with developmental delay and Down syndrome), and ac...

The ADHD Referral Scale and the ADHD Management Strategies Questionnaire (AMSQ) were completed by 52 elementary special and general education teachers. The results of the study revealed that inattention/distractibility was perceived by both the special and general education teachers to be a contributing factor for referring students with ADHD to special education services. The general education teachers also noted hyperactivity to be a contributing factor. The findings further revealed that while special and general education teachers employed behaviour and academic intervention strategies, special education teachers frequently used home/parent intervention strategies. Finally, the MANOVA analyses showed a significant main effect of teaching experience and teachers' experience with ADHD.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the patterns of reading errors from a morphological perspective (level of morphological complexity) and lexical category. One hundred and eighty-three Emirati regular education first graders, (54 male and 129 female) were presented with 96 randomly chosen words from the curriculum. Those were classified into lexical categories representing: nouns (43 words, 44.79%), verbs (32 words, 33.33%), adjectives and adverbs (11 words, 11.46%), and function words (i.e. preposition and conjunctions) (10 words, 10.42%). Words were classified into three levels of linguistic difficulty (easy, difficult, and very difficult) according to their morphological complexity. One male teacher participated in data collection to ensure procedural consistency. Nine reading error patterns were identified. Significant differences between male and female students in reading the target words were found. Results also indicated that reading difficulties may stem from a distinct, though interrelated, threefold paradigm: difficulty level of the read words (i.e. morphological complexity), lexical category (nouns, verbs, adjective and adverbs, prepositions and conjunctions), and pattern of

One hundred and seven educators were selected to respond to the questionnaire which was in the form of a Likert scale. The results indicated that indeed there are challenges that are being faced by the mainstream class teachers. These challenges among others include the lack of skills bases on the part of the teachers, class sizes, shortage of relevant instructional materials, and lack of support services as well as the unavailability of enough time for extra tuition. The study was carried out through the quantitative research design. Data were presented through the use of graphs and tables for easy reading and interpretation.

Context: Due to surplus of oil revenues, GCC countries have witnessed during the last four decades a rapid economic, social and cultural transformational movement which produced comprehensive and developmental programs in all aspects. It is quite notable that the economic growth in GCC countries was parallel with health, social, educational and cultural growth reflected in the concepts dealing with most needy groups of society such as children, handicapped and elders. Small and the large family in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) society have always been the safe haven to all its members from children to elderly stage. Since the UAE society pays a special tribute to elderly people being the men of yesterday and wise men of today, the elderly people have occupied a special place in social services policies implemented by UAE government since its establishment in 1971. Aims: The purpose of this paper is to overview the current services of elderly people especially those with handicapping conditions in UAE society. Analysis of social, economical and cultural background is taken into consideration when providing appropriate suggestions and recommendations to enhance and promote elderly programs.
