Our analysis is divided into four periods: before the First World War; the inter-war years; the post-Second World War decades to about 1980; and the post-1980 period. Each of these periods is characterised by distinct design themes, these being, respectively, the children's library as: School and Shelter; Middle-Class Domesticity and Constructive Play; Open Plan and Modern Office; Domestic Comfort Zone and Pop Culture Playground. Taking an overview of these themes and periods, certain continuities and discontinuities present themselves. The early shelter function of the children's library can be seen today in its role as a cocooned comfort zone. The original schoolroom image, though still visible in the 1920s and 1930s, and even detectable in the era of the children's library as 'modern office' in the 1960s, has now diminished. The open plan of postwar modernism was, naturally, in keeping with contemporary developments in office design, although it also reflected the emergence of the open-plan house, re-enacting the link of the children's library with the domestic sphere. Design for constructive play in the interwar period has undergone a metamorphosis and has re-emerged in the early-twentieth century in the form of the children's library as 'playground'. Heavy references to the domestic environment in the 1920s and 1930s has recently reappeared under the guise of the high-styled IKEA-like environments for young library users; while, in keeping with the trend towards cocooning, the open-plan, free-flow interface with adult sections seems to have lost some of its appeal. Sport and NationalismThis article looks at some of the ways in which sport and nationalism connect and how, in an age of ever closer political and economic ties between EU member states, the world of sport provides a framework for the promotion of individual national identity. Sport and especially large-scale televised sports extravaganzas are not, as is sometimes suggested, events which cement notions of global community but rather arenas in which nationalism and national feelings are confirmed time and time again. I look here at a number of different theoretical views on the nature of nationalism and relate these to how the world of sport acts out these theories in practice. Special emphasis is placed on Benedict Anderson’s idea of Imagined communities, which has come to play such an important role in the understanding of the premises which form the basis for national identity. I also look at Michael Billig’s idea of Banal Nationalism and pursue the idea th...

As a part of this project, DTU Library and The Royal Library, Copenhagen, developed and implemented a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) on academic information seeking. This paper will analyze and discuss how we have used the results and experiences from the DEFF project to develop and further qualify our e-didactic and e-learning endeavors. The second part of the paper will look to the future and how a new DEFF funded project running will seek to establish new solutions taking their inspiration from the concept of co-creation. We will discuss underlying theory of the two DEFF projects, target groups, and how experiences and conclusions from the first DEFF project influenced...

The emergence of information technology in the guise of library automation, online public access catalogues and not least the Internet have changed fundamental perceptions of libraries. The last 10-15 years have been used to implement various IT strategies in libraries, often somewhat unaware of what this would mean for the design and redesign of the library. In recent years books and other traditional materials could be found next to PC's, various multimedia products and other new materials, without any real focus being given to how these new media should be integrated into the traditional library. Use of the library is also changing in a fundamental way. Library patrons no longer need to visit the library in order to search the catalogue, order books or ...
