The carrying capacity of these beams, predominantly loaded in bending, is approached by elastic and inelastic buckling analyses. A series of parameters that are believed to influence the resistance to LTB of class 3 beams to (EC3) steel I-beams, namely boundary conditions, flange thickness, and load application level, are investigated. An eigenvalue analysis that predicts the theoretical buckling strength through 3D computational elastic beam models is first conducted using LTBEAM software and ABAQUS. A good agreement in the prediction of Mcr was found. Then, a parametric inelastic buckling analysis is performed using the Riks method implanted in ABAQUS. Results have shown the importance of the lateral restraint conditions and the transverse stiffeners to LTB resistance of compressive flange slenderness following EC3-1-1 for cross sections with a class 3 web and class 1 or 2 flange. In addition, an interaction of local buckling (LB) and LTB in the flanges was observed exclusively for restrained beams. The applied load level strongly affects the beams' elastic and inelastic resistance to LTB.

The cyclic inelastic responses of more than 20 specimens of isolated links under cyclic load protocol of AISC are simulated and analysed using elastic-plastic model implanted in ABAQUS 14. These isolated links are made from IPE360 and 450, of isotropic steel grade S235. The impact of the shape section of the link is also analysed using HEB profiles with approximately similar geometrical properties as for IPE sections. The effect of the stiffener's kind, number, orientation, spacing and combinations on the overall inelastic cyclic behaviour is also analysed. The numerical results show the determinant role of parameters considered in this study in addition to the contribution of stiffeners, while being elastic, in delaying the premature local buckling, particularly for shear links. Also, the primary obtained results show the importance of the shape section. Based on the good performance of the models studied herein which were designed to RPA99 provisions, the authors think that the time has come for RPA, in its future version, to include the EBF structures as seismic lateral resisting system and to adopt provisions of design of links from international seismic codes: EC8, AISC as they are very close to each other.

The shear strength results obtained from the proposed model as well as those from the design codes (ACI 318, Eurocode 2 and BS 8110) are compared with the database containing 700 beams made of both high strength concrete and normal strength concrete. Furthermore, the experimental results were used to assess the contribution of each shear mechanism obtained from Chen’s, Cavagnis’s and Fernández Ruiz’s models. The contribution of these various shear-transfer actions is also quantified experimentally, using a digital image correlation. As a result, the measured contributions of dowel action, aggregate interlock and compression zone to the total shear resistance were estimated as 45% to 50%, 20% to 35% and 17% to 31%, respectively, for high strength concrete beams. On the contrary, the average test-to-predicted c...
