My research focuses on Utilization of Wastes in Concrete, Durability of Concrete, Concrete Repairs and Non-destructive Testing of Concrete. I have been involved in supervising projects in the area of Durability of High-Volume Fly ash Concrete, Self-compacting Concrete, Use of Wollastonite in Concrete and Durability of Concrete Containing ISF Slag, Geopolymer Concrete, Use of Jarosite in Concrete, etc. I have also been associated with collaborative research project "High Performance Sustainable Concrete Infrastructure" jointly with University of Dundee (U.K.) and eight Indian Institutions, funded by UK India Education and research Initiative (UKIERI).

Strength and Abrasion Characteristics of ISF Slag Concrete

Use of industrial by-products as raw materials in concrete is becoming necessary to address the s... more Use of industrial by-products as raw materials in concrete is becoming necessary to address the sustainability of both the concrete and the industrial growth. The present study assesses the potential of imperial smelting furnace (ISF) slag as in concrete, considering the presence of toxic elements (lead and zinc) and their detrimental effects on the early hydration of cement. Equivalent volume of sand was replaced by ISF slag in different percentages. Concrete specimens were prepared at different water-to-cement ratios. Compressive, flexural, and pull-off strength, along with abrasion resistance, were examined. Leaching potentials of toxic lead, zinc, and cadmium from ISF slag concrete mixtures were also analyzed to evaluate environmental viability. Results are encouraging because sign of delay in setting was not observed. Improvement in compressive and pull-off strength, comparable flexural strength and abrasion resistance, and leaching of toxic elements within safe limits assures the potential of future use of ISF slag as sand in concrete.

It is produced in huge quantities and is a big environmental and health hazard. Therefore, researchers are focusing on development of technologies for its mass consumption. The present research aims to use marble powder in bulk quantities for manufacture of tiles. This paper presents results of an investigation on flexural strength and flexural creep characteristics of the flooring tiles containing marble powder. Four different mix proportions (1:5 to 1:8) were chosen for the investigation. The strength testing was carried out as per IS: 1237 and creep specimens were subjected to sustained central line load at 0.75 stress-strength ratio (applied stress: ultimate flexural strength) for a period up to 81 days. The change in deformation was found to become negligible between 45 to 60 days. Also, conventional concrete often fails to prevent the ingress of moisture and aggressive ions adequately. The concern for concrete durability surfaced globally by the time the structures built with high grade concretes started yielding to distress. Several materials such as fly ash, metakaolin, silica fume, stone waste, rubber tyre, slag, wollastonite etc. which are either industrial wastes or natural minerals, have been examined to make durable concrete. Among the various admixtures studied in the past, the effect of wollastonite on concrete has not been investigated in detail. Wollastonite is a calcium meta-silicate (CaSiO3) mineral with particles similar to cement particles by size. In the present investigation, eighteen concrete mixes at three w/b ratios (0.45, 0.50 and 0.55) were prepared, by substituting Portland cement with wollastonite at varying replacement levels (0–25%). Substitution of 10–15% cement by wollastonite resulted in improved strength and durability of concrete. SEM and MIP results indicated that substitution of cement by wollastonite upto 15% reduced porosity and densified the concrete microstructure.

Abstract Several materials including fly ash, silica fume, metakaoline, wollastonite etc. which a... more Abstract Several materials including fly ash, silica fume, metakaoline, wollastonite etc. which are either industrial wastes or naturally occurring minerals, have been investigated for making durable concrete material. Fly ash, silica fume, marble slurry etc. have been used in combination with wollastonite in cement concrete mixes for property enhancement. Huge amount of fly ash is being produced in India every year. It is expected to reach 225 million tons by 2017, creating its disposal problem which can be minimized by utilizing it in useful applications. The present investigation has been aimed to determine the influence of wollastonite–fly ash (W–FA) combination on properties of concrete such as strength, permeability, and durability over a range of water–binder (w/b) ratios and cement replacement. The microstructure and mercury intrusion porosity results of concrete mixes indicated that increased replacement levels of cement by W–FA combination (45–55%) causes some densification resulting into their enhanced mechanical and durability properties.
