Functional Approaches for Applying Workbased Learning into Electrical and Electronic Technology Education in Nigeria

The study examined functional approaches for applying work-based learning (WBL) into Electrical a... more The study examined functional approaches for applying work-based learning (WBL) into Electrical and Electronic Technology (EET) in northwest Nigeria. Survey research design was adopted to carry out the study. Random sampling technique was used to select two tertiary institutions offering Electrical and Electronic Technology. The entire 32 lecturers of EET from the two tertiary institutions and 64 supervisors of registered Electrical Technology firms in the two states making a total of 96 respondents were used for the study. Data were obtained using structured 48-item questionnaire titled 'Functional Approaches for Applying Work-based Learning Questionnaire (FAAWBLQ)'. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentages and mean ratings. In interpreting the results, work-based learning experience with percentage score of 50% and above were interpreted as 'Practiced' while those with less than 50% were interpreted as 'Not Practiced'. Using 2.50 as the cutoff point, items with mean values of 2.50 and above were interpreted as 'Agreed'. The results of the study showed that only 2 out of the 17 identified work-based learning components were practiced for skill acquisition in Electrical Technology in Northwest Nigeria. In addition, the study identified administrative, school-industry and resource inputs approach for effective application of WBL that will guarantee skill acquisition in Northwest Nigeria. The study recommended policies to strengthen a dynamic and robust WBL in technical and vocation education (TVE) in Nigeria and that work-based learning framework in Nigeria be carefully developed and overseen by Industrial Training Unit (ITU) of education sector to coordinate the synergy between training institutions and industry for improved skill acquisition of the teaming Nigerian youths.

Work-based learning in technical and vocational education and training (TVET) is a separate pedag... more Work-based learning in technical and vocational education and training (TVET) is a separate pedagogy that strengthens the delivery of vocational education and training, and requires students to maintain balance in being a student and a trainee. While the concept of work-based learning is overwhelming, its practice in Nigerian Institutions is relatively low. This paper, therefore, investigates the awareness level of work-based learning in TVET in Nigerian education system. The study participants are 150 TVET Lecturers in Tertiary Institutions that have TVET departments. Mixed method research was adopted because of its ability to provide in-depth discussions into the investigation; questionnaires were developed in a two-step revision stage. First, a structured questionnaire was designed to collect quantitative and qualitative data. Second, validity test was carried out in which the questionnaire was applied to ten TVET lecturers outside the area of study to obtain feedback about the clarity of the questions, the use of appropriate terminology, and the possible omission of important issues. In follow up to validate the responses a focus group discussion was conducted to clarify some pertinent trends captured from the survey. Data collected were coded and analysed with SPSS. Findings among others revealed that there is low level of work-based learning awareness in Nigeria, adopting work-based learning in TVET program will increase students’ responsibilities related to acquiring new skills, which will expand their roles in contributing to nation’s building

Tessellation of polygons that have been innovated through created motifs, as shown in this work, is a departure from standard tessellations of things and animals. In comparison to employing irregular polygons or other items, the fundamental contribution of this work is the simplification and innovation of new patterns from existing regular polygons, in which only three polygons (triangle, square, and hexagon) that may be freely tessellated are employed. This is accomplished by lowering the size of each polygon to its smallest value and then tessellating each of the smaller figures to the right or left to produce two distinct patterns of the same unit called motif.After then, the motifs are joined to form a pattern. The green synthesized nanocomposite was characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Diffraction X-Ray (EDX), Ultra-Violet/Visible spectroscopy, and Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR). These techniques confirmed the formation of CuO@SiO2 nanocomposite. The toxicity studies were conducted for 24 h on 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th instars of malaria vectors at various concentrations of 10, 20, and 25 Mg/L. The LC50 for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th instars were found to be 7.525, 7.980, 8.026 and 9.741 Mg/L, respectively, whilst the LC90 for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th instars were found to be 14.839, 24.937, 57.77 and 48.5 Mg/L, respectively. The correlation coefficient values between concentrations and mortality for instars were obtained in the range of 0.944 - 0.984. Testing of Event Detection Lateness in Wireless Sensor Networks

The sensor consists of small mini computers powered by batteries and use radio communication for the exchange of information it gathers. The sensors are able to collect the data and exchange the information with all the nodes that were affected and triggered during the event detection. Although the technology has been in use for a period of time it has been noted that there is lateness of the event detection by the technology. Therefore the essence of this paper is to describe the factors affecting the lateness detection of events by WSNs. From the experiment it is evident that varying distance of the sensor nodes to the base station and the transmission power affect the packet data transmission efficiency and thus lateness detection of events. Power level at 5 dBm (maximum level) ensures 90% of the event detected is communicated effectively to the base station whereas minimum power level at-10 dBm allows ineffective detection of events. At-10dBm the base station node could not detect a transmitted data packet at distances beyond 30 feet. Thus the application of any sensor node with the transmitting power at-10 dBm will only be effective at the distance less than 10ft. Therefore, distance of the sensor nodes and the transmission power of the WSNs affect the data packet delivery performance and hence lateness of event detection.

This paper presents an improved technique for Face Recognition, which consists of two phases where in each phase; a technique is employed effectively that is used extensively in computer vision and pattern recognition. Initially, the Robust Principal Component Analysis (RPCA) is used specifically in the first phase, which is employed to reduce dimensionality and to extract abstract features of faces. The framework of the second phase is sparse representation based classification (SRC) and introduced metaface learning (MFL) of face images. Experiments for face recognition have been performed on ORL and AR face database. It is shown that the proposed method can perform much best than other methods. And with the proposed method, we can obtain a best understanding of data.

In the selection scheme, the best protocol between AF and DF is selected depending on the comparisons of signal-to-interference and noise ratio (SINR) for all source-relay links. All relays measure the received SINR to decide whether to forward the signal or not. When SINR is above a certain threshold, then DF is used, otherwise AF is used. Through the use of structured questionnaire, the opinions of 385 respondents consisting of 227 TVE lecturers and 158 supervisors of technical and vocational firms were sought. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics and varimax rotated principal component factor analysis with factor loading of 0.40. The result showed that about 25% of the TVE firms in Northwest Nigeria are industrial technical firms, 22% are computer/ICT, 19% are business/distributive trade, 18 % are home economics while about 16% are agricultural based. Based on the perceptions of two strata of stakeholders (entrepreneurship teachers and Radio, Television and Electronic Work curriculum planners), the feasibility and desirability of embedding entrepreneurship skills across Radio, Television and Electronic Work trade curriculum in selected technical colleges were analysed after conducting a preliminary study. Document analysis and in-depth interview were used as the methods for data collection. For the selection scenario, only a best relay that maximizes the end-to- end received signal-to-interference and noise ratio (SINR) at the destination is selected to forward the information. Through statistical analyses, we establish a closed-form expression for the symbol error rate (SER), by deriving the analytical expressions for the probability density function ( PDF ), the cumulative density function ( CDF ), and the moment generating function (MGF) of the instantaneous received signal to interference and noise ratio (SINR) from relay selection. At relay nodes we use selection combiner (SC), which only process one of the diversity branches that has the highest SINR, alternatively, at the destination we used maximum ratio combiner (MRC) to combine the transmitted signals from the source and that one from the best selected relay. we show that our new scheme optimizes well the available resources (two channel links: the direct and the best relay links). Simulations are given to validate the analytical results with different number of relays and different interference power.

Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is envisioned to prepare a workforce which... more Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is envisioned to prepare a workforce which has knowledge of behaviour and skills that could enable them in securing and maintaining their job effectively. Thus, in carrying out the task, two main elements are involved; institution and workplaces. Students receive training in the theory aspect from school and practice in industry. Therefore, relationship between these two elements is essential for the attainment of goals TVET. This study aims to provide a systematic review of published researches on the current practice of Work-based Learning in TVET and to assess the major challenges that affect the relationship between school and workplace with a view to make recommendations for the best practice in future application of WBL in TVET. To achieve this aims, papers were selected in April 2018 with search terms "Work-Based Learning" "Conceptual Model of WBL" "WBL in TVET" and "Implementation of WBL in TVET" from five databases: Scopus, PsycINFO, Springer, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect.16 research based article were evaluated published from 2000 to 2018. Findings revealed the extent of the implementation of WBL in TVET in tertiary institutions including universities is low. Emphasis was given to some aspects such as Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) leaving other aspects unexploited. These unexploited aspects include cooperative work experience, job shadowing, youth apprenticeship programme, internships among others etc. Factors affecting the implementation of WBL in TVET identified in the reviewed researchers were curriculum defects, poor policy framework, inadequate trained manpower to supervise the proper implementation and lack of WBL learning implementation framework in institution of learning. The findings add to the growing empirical evidence regarding the positive impact of WBL in TVET. Policy makers, educators, and the public can contribute to development of TVET by supporting the incorporation of WBL into standard TVET practices.

The green synthesized nanocomposite was characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Diffraction X-Ray (EDX), Ultra-Violet/Visible spectroscopy, and Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR). These techniques confirmed the formation of CuO@SiO2 nanocomposite. The toxicity studies were conducted for 24 h on 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th instars of malaria vectors at various concentrations of 10, 20, and 25 Mg/L. The LC50 for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th instars were found to be 7.525, 7.980, 8.026 and 9.741 Mg/L, respectively, whilst the LC90 for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th instars were found to be 14.839, 24.937, 57.77 and 48.5 Mg/L, respectively. The correlation coefficient values between concentrations and mortality for instars were obtained in the range of 0.944 - 0.984. The sensor consists of small mini computers powered by batteries and use radio communication for the exchange of information it gathers. The sensors are able to collect the data and exchange the information with all the nodes that were affected and triggered during the event detection. Although the technology has been in use for a period of time it has been noted that there is lateness of the event detection by the technology. Therefore the essence of this paper is to describe the factors affecting the lateness detection of events by WSNs. From the experiment it is evident that varying distance of the sensor nodes to the base station and the transmission power affect the packet data transmission efficiency and thus lateness detection of events. Power level at 5 dBm (maximum level) ensures 90% of the event detected is communicated effectively to the base station whereas minimum power level at-10 dBm allows ineffective detection of events. At-10dBm the base station node could not detect a transmitted data packet at distances beyond 30 feet. Thus the application of any sensor node with the transmitting power at-10 dBm will only be effective at the distance less than 10ft. Therefore, distance of the sensor nodes and the transmission power of the WSNs affect the data packet delivery performance and hence lateness of event detection.

This paper presents an improved technique for Face Recognition, which consists of two phases where in each phase; a technique is employed effectively that is used extensively in computer vision and pattern recognition. Initially, the Robust Principal Component Analysis (RPCA) is used specifically in the first phase, which is employed to reduce dimensionality and to extract abstract features of faces. The framework of the second phase is sparse representation based classification (SRC) and introduced metaface learning (MFL) of face images. Experiments for face recognition have been performed on ORL and AR face database. It is shown that the proposed method can perform much best than other methods. And with the proposed method, we can obtain a best understanding of data.

Through the use of structured questionnaire, the opinions of 385 respondents consisting of 227 TVE lecturers and 158 supervisors of technical and vocational firms were sought. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics and varimax rotated principal component factor analysis with factor loading of 0.40. For the selection scenario, only a best relay that maximizes the end-to- end received signal-to-interference and noise ratio (SINR) at the destination is selected to forward the information. Through statistical analyses, we establish a closed-form expression for the symbol error rate (SER), by deriving the analytical expressions for the probability density function ( PDF ), the cumulative density function ( CDF ), and the moment generating function (MGF) of the instantaneous received signal to interference and noise ratio (SINR) from relay selection. At relay nodes we use selection combiner (SC), which only process one of the diversity branches that has the highest SINR, alternatively, at the destination we used maximum ratio combiner (MRC) to combine the transmitted signals from the source and that one from the best selected relay. we show that our new scheme optimizes well the available resources (two channel links: the direct and the best relay links). Simulations are given to validate the analytical results with different number of relays and different interference power.

Thus, in carrying out the task, two main elements are involved; institution and workplaces. Students receive training in the theory aspect from school and practice in industry. Therefore, relationship between these two elements is essential for the attainment of goals TVET. This study aims to provide a systematic review of published researches on the current practice of Work-based Learning in TVET and to assess the major challenges that affect the relationship between school and workplace with a view to make recommendations for the best practice in future application of WBL in TVET. To achieve this aims, papers were selected in April 2018 with search terms "Work-Based Learning" "Conceptual Model of WBL" "WBL in TVET" and "Implementation of WBL in TVET" from five databases: Scopus, PsycINFO, Springer, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect.16 research based article were evaluated published from 2000 to 2018. Findings revealed the extent of the implementation of WBL in TVET in tertiary institutions including universities is low. Emphasis was given to some aspects such as Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) leaving other aspects unexploited. These unexploited aspects include cooperative work experience, job shadowing, youth apprenticeship programme, internships among others etc. Factors affecting the implementation of WBL in TVET identified in the reviewed researchers were curriculum defects, poor policy framework, inadequate trained manpower to supervise the proper implementation and lack of WBL learning implementation framework in institution of learning. The findings add to the growing empirical evidence regarding the positive impact of WBL in TVET. Policy makers, educators, and the public can contribute to development of TVET by supporting the incorporation of WBL into standard TVET practices.
