Nadia M Wager
Between August 2014 and June 2016 I was a Reader in Psychology at the University of Bedfordshire. Prior to this I was Principal Lecturer and Portfolio Leader in Psychology (between September 2012 and August 2014) I am an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society and a Chartered Psychologist (Teaching and Research). I hold a PhD in Applied Psychology awarded by Brunel University in 2002 and in 2009 I completed the British Psychological Society's independent route to achieving Stage One of the Diploma in Forensic Psychology (equivalent to an MSc). The dissertation for this was a critical review of the potential social-cognitive mechanisms that might potentiate risk for sexual revictimisation. This has served as a catalyst for my on-going empirical research in this area. My research findings to-date have highlighted that amnesia for memories of childhood sexual abuse is associated with heightened risk for sexual revictimisation. And that both amnesia and revictimisation are more likely in cases where the abuse was perpetrated by a trusted individual and the child received a negative response to an early disclosure (a concept I have referred to as ‘double-betrayal’).
Additionally, I am an active applied researcher who engages with community partners in evaluation, training and consultancy activities. Partners to-date have included; Thames Valley and Bedfordshire Police, Thames Valley Probation, Circles UK, Circles South East, NOTA, Buckinghamshire County Council, Bracknell Forest Community Safety Partnership, Restorative Solutions, R U Safe, Thames Valley Partnership, CALM etc. My main focus is on victimisation (both as primary victims and secondary victims) and the application of restorative justice practices to serious crimes such as sexual and domestic violence.
Previously I taught Criminal and Forensic Psychology and Victimology for ten years at Buckinghamshire New University, where I was presented with Inspirational Lecturer Awards in 2011 and 2012.
