Just as the iris regulates the amount of light entering your eye, the aperture controls the light that passes through the lens and hits the sensor. When there’s too much light, your iris closes down (a higher f-stop) to limit the light entering. At night or in low light, it opens up (a lower f-stop) to allow more light in. But aperture doesn’t just affect exposure; it also influences depth-of-field (DOF)! Depth-of-field determines how much of your shot is in focus. Increases your depth-of-field, making both foreground and background sharper. However, this limits the amount of light entering the lens.
