In this article I examine how medieval Sefardic commentators explained the words of Yose ben Yoha... more In this article I examine how medieval Sefardic commentators explained the words of Yose ben Yohanan of Jerusalem in Avot 1:5: "Do not talk excessively with women". Misogynist attitudes were part of the prevailing atmosphere in Spain during the latter half of the Middle Ages, but women played a role even in the Jewish public sphere, albeit to a lesser extent than men; and while there were expressions of condescension and hostility toward women, other voices were heard as well. The commentaries on Avot have much to teach us about the viewpoints, the problems, the concerns and beliefs of their authors and of the audiences for whom they were written. Since the commentators were cultural agents, we may assume that at least some of their as well as by the rabbis' direct and indirect followers.
