So they were dependent on others for fastening and unfastening of cuffs, tucking of shirt, fastening/unfastening of pants belt & fly's zipper, tying/untying of string. The problems encountered by hemiplegic women were slipping and removing upper garments off the head and arms. In case of lower garments, setting of the garment at waist, tying of string, slipping and removing the garments off legs were the problems being faced by majority of the respondents and most of them were always dependent on others.

A few paraplegic men encountered problems while wearing and removing upper garments for which help was always obtained. The problems encountered by all the respondents with the lower garments were: slipping legs in garments and removing them, garments and bed wetting because of incontinence, bunching of garments causing discomforts and bed sores at pressure points like scapula region, hip or back bones and wounds due to traction belt. Suitability assessment of functional features provided in the garments of paraplegics in accordance to their clothing related problems revealed that upper garments made with center front placket and large armholes were assessed to be highly suitable for the patients who had pain in their upper limbs. 'T'-shirt made to hip length were found to be very comfortable as bunching and wetting of garments could be prevented. A vest designed with back pocket for poly fiber padded cushion provided comfortability at scapula region while sleeping and sitting. Payajma with crotch length placket was assessed to be highly suitable due to ease in dressing/undressing as well as changing of napkins and pads. Napkin with side placket, padded with poly fiber at identified areas was found to be very appropriate as it could be changed easily and padding provided sufficient comfortability at pressure points.

The problems encountered by them while dressing/ undressing were: fastening/unfastening of placket and cuffs, tucking of shirt, sleeves of amputated side keep hanging if prosthesis not used, inconvenient to use front pocket of left side by right limb amputee, setting lower garments at waist, fastening of pants' belt fly's zipper, tying/untying of string and setting of dhoti. The problems encountered by women are fastening/unfastening of fasteners, setting of lower garments at waist, tying/untying of string and setting of saree.

Reinforcement provided to increase the serviceability of upper garments was highly appreciated. Pauncha placket fastened with zipper provided ease at the time of setting/detaching prosthesis. Underwears or hoses shirred with elastic were found useful to prevent frequent wear and tear as well as abrasion in lower garments.

A few paraplegics faced problems while wearing and removing upper garments as they had pain in their upper limbs whereas other common problems faced by majority of the paraplegics were: slipping legs in garments and removing them, garment and bed wetting because of incontinence, bunching of garments causing discomfort and bed sores at pressure points e.g. scapula region, hip or back bones and wounds due to traction belt.

Cotton is one of the major cash crops grown in India. After harvesting it goes under various processes until the manufacturing of a fine fabric. Ginning is the first step in this direction. A large amount of fibre dust is released during ginning and workers engaged in this process are at a great risk of exposure to various health problems due to lack of protective clothing and other preventive measures. The present study was conducted to study the existing clothing practices and health problems encountered by the workers of ginning mill. The data collected from thirty respondents engaged in cotton ginning at mills of Hisar and Panipat revealed that the respondents wear casual dresses at work place. Due to lack of protective or functional clothing and long exposure to cotton dust and high level of noise, the respondents faced different health problems viz. eye irritation, running nose, coughing, headache, hearing and breathing problems, etc.

Seven mordants used to study their effect on printing with said dye were: aluminium sulphate, copper sulphate, ferrous sulphate, lead acetate, potassium dichromate (chrome), stannous chloride and zinc chloride. Simultaneous mordanting technique was used. The mordants were added on the basis of total printing paste prepared under optimum conditions. Out of seven mordants, two mordants selected on the basis of visual assessment and washing fastness were chrome and copper sulphate. Fast colours were obtained when 3 per cent chrome or 5 per cent copper sulphate was used. The use of mordants produced various colours with marigold flower dye. Beige colour was obtained when dye was used without any mordant whereas it was mustard with chrome and olive green with copper sulphat

These require bringing them into contemporary look and developed through faster techniques. Fabric painting is an innovative, economical and time saving technique as compare to the embroidery. Present study was conducted for transforming Kantha traditional embroidery designs for fabric painting on jacket for its revival at Hisar, India. Fifteen motifs were explored from market survey, 3 designs were developed and selected from them and finally three placement-design combinations were selected for developing final products. Six jackets were developed, i.e., three with embroidery and three with painting. On the basis of experts’ preferences for developed jackets on various parameters, fabric painting technique was most preferred technique on the basis of ove...

To promote functional garments amongst the target group, their construction and production was initiated. For that a catalogue entitled ‘Drafting Technique of Functional Garments’ was prepared in English and Hindi. To impart technical know how regarding functional garments, workshops were organized in two rehabilitating organizations running training-cum production center. The workshops were attended by the instructors and the trainees of the centers including handicapped persons. The participants had high opinion about the functional garments because they found that ‘The functional features incorporated in the garments will increase their serviceability and durability’, ‘the functional garments will enhance the perso...

Four different protective masks were given and tested on various parameters. Respondents reported respiratory health problems which were mainly due to heat and organic dust in the surroundings. All respondents reported irritation in eyes and throat followed by nose (85.0%) and ears (75.0%). Musculo-skeletal problems were reported showing severe to very severe discomfort in lower arms (m.s. = 3.8), upper back (3.6) and upper arms (3.4). Overall discomfort score (ODS) was 7.6 depicting high level of discomfort. Peak expiratory flow rate was reduced by 6.6 % depicting reduced capacity of lungs after day long work in polluted environment. Hood mask was highly acceptable as it showed lowest breathing resistance. Leakage of dust from sides and rate of sweating was medium. Hence, use of hood mask would be helpful to achieve the ergonomics objective of reducing health problems and ...

The garments were given to the respondents for three consecutive trials to assess their suitability and acceptability. The data highlighted that hemiplegic men, their care takers, care takers of hemiplegic women and paraplegic men had high level of acceptability for functional garments. Hemiplegic women and their caretakers had medium level of acceptability for functional garments. The 't' values indicated that there was a significant difference between acceptability level of hemiplegic men and their caretakers. The chi-square values indicated that age and educational status of the respondents, family educational status of caretakers and their income had significant association with acceptability level for the functional garments.

Wearing the proper clothes at work can help to prevent some injuries to the body. Various farm jobs require different types of clothing. These should not only protect the body, increase safety and health but also should improve workers job efficiency and allow the wearer, maximum use of senses. The problems cannot be completely eradicated but can be solved up to some extent through specially designed 'Functional Clothing' that may prove to be a boon for the farmers. Here an effort has been made to design and construct functional clothing for farm workers.
