V.K. McCarty

Her new book: "FROM THEIR LIPS: VOICES OF EARLY CHRISTIAN WOMEN" (2021) is available from Gorgias Press. Born in Boston & a graduate cum laude from General Theological Seminary, VK McCarty was trained for the stage at Michigan State University, University of Louisville, and University of London, including vocal study with composer Herbert Howells at the Royal College of Music and two years with Henry Madden at The Actors Studio. New York City theatre credits include Leon Kirchner’s “Lily” (premiere) at New York City Opera, Christopher Humble’s “Flight of the Earls” (premiere) at St. Clements Theater, George Kleinsinger’s musical “Benedictus” (premiere) at Marymount Manhattan Theater; out of town: Cyril Richard’s last show tour, “Naughty Marietta,” Aspen Music Festival soloist. After her theatre career, she worked in the 80s and 90s in publishing, as V.P. Associate Publisher at General Media, Inc., and in hospital chaplaincy, at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital. During those years, she also served as Sub-deacon and master of ceremonies for St. Ignatius of Antioch Church, and later as preacher and LEM for several New Jersey parishes, and as Director of Christian Formation for St. Paul’s, Chatham; she is an Associate of the Community of the Holy Spirit, a Confrere of St. Gregory's Abbey, and an ecumenical fellow of the Sophia Institute. Pilgrimage has held a special place in her life for many years; favorite destinations have included: the Holy Land, Hagia Sophia, Ravenna, several Russian monasteries, and Canterbury. Book projects include editing "Through the Gates into the City: a Metropolis, a Seminary and a Chapel" & THE VOWS BOOK. McCarty served as Acquisitions Librarian for The General Theological Seminary 2000-2014, as well as guest lecturer in Ascetical Theology, assistant marshal, and copy-editor. She enjoys Biblical languages, ballet and Byzantium.
