YEARS AGO A YOUNG WOMAN WAS BEATEN AND RAPED WHILE ONLOOKERS DID NOTHING. NOW THOSE WITNESSES ARE BECOMING VICTIMS THEMSELVES...
Baltimore homicide detective J.D. Fitzpatrick has seen a lot of horrific violence both as a cop and during his deployment in Afghanistan, but nothing like the trail of tortured bodies turning up throughout the city. He's up against a brutal killer with a very personal vendetta, and J.D. is beginning to suspect that his medical examiner may be shielding some crucial evidence linked to the case.
Medical examiner Dr. Lucy Trask is intrigued by J.D.'s compassion, but she isn't about to mix work with pleasure. Not while there's a ruthless killer on the loose. And definitely not while she's keeping a dark secret that could connect her to these vicious killings - and put her next on the killer's hit list...
Internationally bestselling, RITA-award winning, author Karen Rose was born and raised in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC. She met her husband, Martin, on a blind date when they were seventeen and after they both graduated from the University of Maryland, (Karen with a degree in Chemical Engineering) they moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. Karen worked as an engineer for a large consumer goods company, earning two patents, but as Karen says, “scenes were roiling in my head and I couldn't concentrate on my job so I started writing them down. I started out writing for fun, and soon found I was hooked.”
Her debut suspense novel, DON'T TELL, was released in July, 2003. Since then, she has published fifteen more novels and two novellas. Her seventeenth novel, ALONE IN THE DARK, will be released in 2016.
Karen's books have appeared on the bestseller lists of the New York Times, USA Today, London's Sunday Times, and Germany's der Spiegel (#1), and the Irish Times, as well as lists in South Africa (#1) and Australia!
Her novels, I'M WATCHING YOU and SILENT SCREAM, received the Romance Writers of America's RITA award for Best Romantic Suspense for 2005 and 2011. Five of her other books have been RITA finalists. To date, her books have been translated into twenty-four languages.
A former high school teacher of chemistry and physics, Karen lives in Florida with her husband of more than twenty years, her two daughters, two dogs, and a cat.
Karen Rose knows how to hook readers with a chilling prologue and keep them engaged and in suspense throughout a novel. You Belong to Me is the first book in her Baltimore Romantic Suspense series which combines a police procedural with romantic suspense. Baltimore city Homicide Detective JD Fitzpatrick has been a lot violence in his career as a policeman as well as his deployment in Afghanistan. However, the bodies turning up throughout the city take violence and torture to a new level. JD is intrigued by Medical Examiner Dr. Lucy Trask, who has several secrets that make him believe she may be shielding evidence linked to the case.
JD is compassionate, kind, has a good ear for accents, confident, and kind. Lucy is contained, thorough, sensible, predictable, has an eye for detail, and doesn’t get close to many people. As the story progresses, both show growth and become more dynamic.
This riveting crime thriller, police procedural, and romantic suspense novel keeps you turning the pages. The writing is fluid and descriptive which helps readers envision the scenes without disrupting or slowing the flow. It’s well-plotted with a few twists, and the storyline is gripping at times and heartwarming at other times. Add to that plenty of conflict and a strong but vulnerable protagonist, and you have a winning combination. However, there are some disturbing torture scenes.
Overall, this was intriguing, suspenseful, and had an action-packed ending with compelling characters that kept me turning the pages. With exciting scenes and a fascinating story line, this astonishing thriller kept me fully engaged. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
I purchased a copy of this novel. All opinions expressed in this review are my own. Publication date was January 11, 2011. ------------------------------------------ My 4.41 rounded to 4 stars review is coming soon.
Forensic pathologist Lucy Trask stumbles upon a dead body while jogging and, in that moment, her world is changed forever. Homicide detective J.D. Fitzpatrick is assigned to the case that turns out to be a pileup of bodies like he's never experienced before. Complicating everything is not only his attraction to Lucy (and she to him), but all of her secrets lying beneath a cool facade that makes his job tougher when it becomes painfully obvious she's also a focus of a diabolical and brutal killer.
This guy was really sadistic and scary. He was a master at disguise, which made him all the more frightening as he operated in the midst of normalcy, seeking revenge (won't divulge against whom). There's quite a big cast to keep up with as I tried to figure out the connections and what was really going on so be prepared for that (I kept a list). I was repulsed by the truth when all was revealed, though it didn't change my revulsion about those who were murdered. However, it will test your limits.
I "enjoyed" this story, finding it hard to put down, though I was bothered by the body count. Lucy was an extremely interesting character with a whole lot of layers and there was lots to admire about her. J.D. was no slouch either and I like how their relationship developed. This series continues to be a favorite and I'm intrigued by the new characters introduced here in the new city (Baltimore). And! Part of the story was set in my Virginia hometown.
5 reasons why this book is bloody good. (Pun intended)
1. Despite having 480 pages, the pacing is fast that I didn't even notice that it's longer than usual.
2. The mystery is mysterious. It leaves you hanging and wondering who the fuck is butchering up people.
3. The romance is good. It's not overly done, it's not the center of the story and it's not the "I'll-roll-my-eyes-this-is-shitty" romance that we usually see in a romantic suspense books.
4. Blood and pieces of dead bodies everywhere... ♥
5. The secondary characters are interesting. The type where you want to read the next book to know more about them..
P.S: You don't have to read the previous books to understand this story. This can be read as a standalone ♥
1 Stern aufgrund unvereinbarer Geschmacksunterschiede.
Wow. This was a lot of book to get through (494 pages), but well worth the time it took to read it. This is the start of a new series of connected books for Karen Rose taking place in Baltimore, so expect to meet a lot of characters and read plenty of details about them. As expected with the first book of a series, all that set-up can slow the pace of the book down a bit, and I thought this book lagged just a bit in the middle. But once everything started coming together, the last third of the book just flew by! Rose weaves together an intricate revenge plot, serves up one of her patented psycho killers (although call me crazy, but I could sympathize a bit with the killer), and gives us a brave H/h to root for. The story takes place over the course of 3-4 days, so there's not much time for romance, but somehow KR manages to give us a couple of scenes that get your heart pounding and make you wonder what she could do in the romance department if her H/h had a lot more time together.
The basic plot is pretty easy to understand. Twenty-one years ago a group of high school seniors were involved in a crime that they covered up. Now someone is out to see that they pay for that crime, and is killing them (in a most gruesome way) one by one. The heroine of the book, 35-year-old Baltimore medical examiner Dr. Lucy Trask is somehow connected to the crime (although she doesn't know how) because the killer is making sure that she's the one to find all the victims. Was Lucy involved in something 21 years ago?
Trying to solve the case is handsome widowed homicide detective J.D. Fitzpatrick. J.D. and Lucy are instantly attracted to each other (she thought of him as a narcotic), but both have a lot of baggage and Lucy is a woman with a lot of secrets. Will J.D. be able to get past the walls Lucy has surrounding her heart? Will Lucy let J.D. know the real her, or just the prim, sedate part she reveals to the public? And will J.D. and Lucy be able to work together to stop a killer whose next victim may be Lucy?
This was a typical KR thriller, with an intricate plot that has many pieces and plenty of gruesomeness from our killer. There's quite a few POV's, and you have to be on your toes and pay attention to all the clues revealed while reading (or take some notes). It's always exciting to read a KR book because she only reveals just enough to keep you guessing, and of course your mind gets busy conjuring up possibilities. In You Belong To Me you figure out pretty quickly who the killer is and why he's doing the killing, but you're on the edge of your seat wating to see when the H/h will realize just who he is and what the heroine's connection to him is.
I really loved the hero, compassionate, sexy, homicide detective J.D. Fitzpatrick and his relationship with Dr. Lucy Trask. They had a couple of hot moments together that made me wish for more! Lucy did frustrate me a bit with her secret keeping--getting her to reveal info was like pulling teeth! So kudos to J.D. for hanging in there with her until she revealed all. My frustration with her was forgotten when she proved herself to be rather kick-ass in the nail-biting conclusion when she faced off against the killer.
So yes, Karen Rose is off to a good, solid start with her Baltimore books. This doesn't quite make it to favorite status, but all her books are winners for me. If you like smart romantic suspense (heavy on the suspense), with a heaping side order of gore, I think you'll enjoy this one. I'm hoping we see J.D. and Lucy in upcoming books, because I'd like to check in on them and see how they're doing. 4 stars
I never even noticed how long this book was. I only eagerly devoured it page by page. To say that the plot was brilliantly crafted and the romance hot, well those are just givens with a Karen Rose book. But, I will say, that after 12 books, I FINALLY GUESSED THE BADDIE !!! We have a whole new cast of characters here in the Baltimore books and I look forward to reading the rest of them.
Lucy Trask is out jogging in the early morning, as is her routine, when she comes across a body slumped over a chess table in the park. Her first impression is that the victim is poor Mr. Pugh who has Alzheimer's and has wandered away again. It isn't, but it gives Lucy the shock of her life none the less. Lucy is a ME in Baltimore and someone has left this poor victim for Lucy to find. He is just the first victim lest for Lucy to find, but not the last. A bizarre puzzle unfolds and Lucy's past holds the key.
J.D. Fitzpatrick is a Baltimore homicide detective who, with his partner, Stevie, catches this case. He also catches a case if instant lust for Lucy. It's mutual, but both fight the attraction for all of, oh, 11 hours, then they have a kissing scene that melts right off the pages. By then it is oblivious that Lucy is a target and J.D. is going to play her protector. These two both had childhoods that were really messed up and it takes them time before they trust and open up to each other. As the body count rises, everyone is desperate to catch this crazy. They have a glimpse of why he is killing, but have no idea who it is.
Karen Rose is definitely the master when it comes to creepy killers, eerie chillers, and dark thrillers, and this was certainly no exception. You Belong To Me is an edgy, intense romantic suspense that introduces a new cast of characters based in the Baltimore area. I really liked the hero, sexy widower and former military sniper and vice cop, Homicide Detective J.D. Fitzpatrick. The romance between J.D. and medical examiner with a troubled past, Dr. Lucy Trask, is emotional and passionate, and it’s also steamier than some of Rose’s other books.
I definitely liked the intensity of the romance in this one, but I didn’t enjoy the overall story as much as some of Rose’s previous books. There were too many characters, alternate POVs, and confusing details to keep track of, and it dragged at times. The villain is sadistically scary and the suspense is edge-of-your-seat gripping, so in other words, it’s classic Karen Rose. Although it’s not my favorite of hers, You Belong To Me is still a satisfying, nail-biting romantic suspense thriller. 3 ½ stars.
Karen Rose knows exactly how to write a story that will grab you and not let go. This story revolves around a lot of secrets. It twists and turns all the way to the end. There is a lot of violence in this book so if that bothers you than I suggest you do not read it.
Why is a killer leaving bodies staged for Lucy to find? Why do they all have links back to her home town? And what secret does she know that is putting her in danger?
It's complicated.
It took me until I was over 1/3 of the way into this book before it all started coming together for me. I had even contemplated dnfing it! Dnf a Karen Rose? That would be a first for me. But I'm glad I didn't. Once things started falling into place, I couldn't leave it alone. It became one of those books you prop up on the kitchen bench to read while preparing the vegetables at the risk of losing a fingertip.
This is an intense, complex, and sometimes complicated, but engrossing read.
As with always with a Karen Rose book a speedy read because it was another page turner. Very addictive and entertaining. Although a very yucky murderer.
I'm a big fan of Ms. Rose and as far as KR fare goes, this doesn’t disappoint. It holds her usual cocktail of chilling, thrilling suspense, wickedly insane serial killer, dark pasts, deep-buried secrets, traumatic upbringings, and a side-dish of hot romance.
On the other hand, I was rather disappointed with the slowness of the pace (I became a fan because her books were always fast-moving page-turners), and the annoying heroine (which came as quite a surprise, since this was a Karen Rose book). I simply didn’t get Lucy. She was an emotional cripple, which was understandable given what she’s been through in the past, but still, she took the emotional-crippledness to a higher level that was necessary. I didn’t get the secret-keeping, it wasn’t like she was a porn-star or anything that could ruin her career, and I didn’t care for her attitude – again, understandable due to the past, but still, a bit over the top.
Also, the thing with the PI bothered me quite a bit. I understand the whole PI-client confidentiality thing, I understand the fact he and his deceased partner have helped quite a lot of people to disappear (not really through legal channels), but still, when the bodies start piling up and you know who did it, why wouldn’t you tell the police and prevent more bodies from piling up? Would someone really be that stupid to stand in the way of justice for...I don’t know what reasons?
All in all, I have absolutely no idea how to rate this one. On one side it was great, on the other...not so much. I guess I’ll just go with the middle ground. 3 stars...Fine 3 ½.
After reading 500 pages of this book in what seems like an eternity, I only have one thing to say: "Thank God I'm finished with it!"
And I had such high hopes...
It looked like an interesting book. The reviews were good. The title was good. I liked the blurb. I liked the cover. And it was so bad for me. I struggled to finish it. In the end all I had was a headache.
I can't even start to talk about what it was about and what didn't work for me. The headache is getting in the way of my thoughts.
Oh, Lucy and J.D, I don't want to see you again. Goodbye.
Medical Examiner Lucy Trask is devastated to learn that the body she stumbled upon while jogging is someone from her past. Soon more victims are placed in her path, and it becomes clear that a malicious killer has set his sights on Lucy. Only by revealing her deepest secrets can she save herself from becoming his next target.
Lucy is an appealing heroine although her tendency toward secret keeping is rather irritating, especially as a killer is out to get her.
Homicide Detective J.D. Fitzpatrick is totally yummy! As a former military sniper and narcotics cop, J.D. has all the makings of an overbearing alpha male yet his physical strength is balanced by a gentleness and protectiveness that makes his romance with Lucy all the more intense and passionate.
Rose writes an excellent villain, and the one in this book is no exception. Vicious and brutal, the killer has no qualms about killing anyone who gets in their way. That said, by writing such a one-dimensional baddie, Rose missed out on an opportunity for providing a deeper and more insightful persepective on the moral ambiguities of vigilante justice.
All in all, Rose is definitely back on track after the disaster of the Vartanian series, and I look forward to continuing with the characters from her Baltimore books.
A smorgasbord of characters and suspects, a gory pile of corpses piling up, and two seemingly unconnected investigations plus a trailer load of secrets equals another great read in Karen Rose's Romantic Suspense series. Add in a good dash of sexual chemistry and romance and you've got another Must Read by this author.
It has been a while since I tried this from the library but what killed this for me was the heroine. I remember that she had so many secrets and just kept hiding stuff and some wasn't even a big deal. So she frustrated me really bad just because she just never opened up.
My first Karen Rose's book. I didn't know what to expect from her but certainly not that many victims, everyone drop like flies!! At the end there are 12 bodies in total, urgh! The villain? I hate him for what he had done but nothing just black and white in this book. I don't even warm to the heroine up to the first half, oh well I guess you just need to find out.
This book is multiple POV, and the way it set up I know we will get more stories from this bunch. Because eventhought we know the H/h of this story, we also got lots of future H/h glimpse too.
I don't mind much tho because the story is interesting and made me sleep very laaaaaate last night!!! Feeling like zombie now but will hop to the next book in the series soon!:)
Sometimes going home again isn’t always what you think it would be. Home can be the place of our childhood dreams and it can also be the place of our greatest nightmares. Only the strong at heart can walk away and never look back.
Beginning a new series set in Baltimore, Karen Rose introduces brings to life a new set of characters and sets us up for a thrilling experience in suspense as only she can. A violent childhood, and reluctant mother and a dead brother all haunt her on a daily basis. After setting up a new life with people who care about her, Lucy must return to her childhood and revisit memories that she has spent years forgetting. Lucy and J.D. confront all the suspects, victims and clues that they hope will lead to a serial killer and reveal his connection to Lucy.
Stir into the mixture a secret nightlife that she is determined to keep private, a lifelong friend, a nurturing former teacher dealing with Alzheimer’s Disease, an overprotective business partner along with the various detectives, DA’s, ME’s and hometown neighbors you will see that there is nothing here that is less than perfect.
When reading suspense, you want dialogue, you want to hear the characters discuss and uncover the clues, and this is where Karen Rose is the master. No one can compare with her balance of narrative and dialogue. Dramas often get lost under the detailed descriptions and no dialogue for pages and pages. Never will this be an issue for a Karen Rose reader. Her particular talent of combining many different aspects of the story and points of view moves the story along at a rapid pace, never losing the details or the interest of the readers.
With You Belong To Me, Karen Rose brings suspense to a whole new level! When you are a fan of a particular author you are willing to wait and wait for their next production. Sometimes it is worth the wait and sometimes not so much! When it comes to Karen Rose, though, it is always worth the wait.
I've said it before, but I'll say it again. Karen Rose is literally as good as it gets in writing romantic mystery/thrillers. No one can do what she can. She puts you straight into the lives of the MCs and victims, making them feel like characters you've been reading about for years. At the same time, she puts you in the mind of the killers with chilling success. As you continue to bounce back and forth between different POVs you'll become so addicted to her books that you won't be able to stop until you've read them all.
You Belong To Me is no exception. I think this is the first book she has written that isn't connected to all her previous works, but I didn't miss having familiar names and places. I am intrigued by some of the other characters introduced, so I'm glad she is setting up a new series of connected books.
Lucy Trask, the female MC, actually had me constantly back and forth as to whether I liked her personality. But, eventually, enough of her history was revealed that it became easy to forgive her for all of her personality issues. Even if I hadn't ended up liking her, it is really refreshing to have an author unafraid to present her characters warts and all versus making them all unbelievably perfect. Although, J.D. Fitzpatrick was pretty darn wonderful. The tough-yet-sensitive-cop character type that will never get old.
I love how we get bits and pieces of the story, some that seem completely unrelated, at a time so that it takes awhile before the bigger picture becomes clear. Then, once we know the who and why - she throws in a curve that will take you by the throat until the very end. The story that starts with Lucy's older brother in high school, continues through his seemingly accidental death and through to the current day and the twelve victims a killer bent on revenge leaves behind will leave you second guessing everything and everyone you come across while reading. If you're a fan of the romantic suspense genre, you definitely can't pass this one by!
Karen Rose is one of my favorite romantic suspense writers...mainly because she doesn't hold back. Her characters always have been through and continue to go through horrible things, and they make it through all of them. The characters in her novels always resonate with me because they're survivors.
While this particular story wasn't my favorite of hers, it was still a solid book that had me enthralled from the getgo. JD and Lucy feel an instant connection that the reader immediately picks up on, and yes their relationship does evolve very quickly, but I can overlook it because of the extreme circumstances. Sadly, this book didn't have any of her previous characters in it, and that is one thing I really missed. The connections always made the books a little more emotional, and I think that's why I didn't enjoy this one quite as much. Lucy kept too many secrets, and I didn't think her reasons for keeping them were strong enough. JD was so patient with her, and I connected with him a lot more because of it.
The villain was super creepy, and though I had an idea of who I thought it might be, I was still a little surprised with the ending. The mystery involving the past was a nice addition.
I'm hoping this is the beginning of a new set of connections for Karen Rose, and that Gwyn, Stevie, Clay, Alyssa, and Thorne will also get books. I got that vibe from the ending, but I could be wrong. Kudos for brilliant writing, Ms. Rose!
My first Karen Rose's book. I think, the In Death series have ruined me for other suspense books for life. I know, it's not fair. I had to put this book aside for a couple of days because it wasn't getting to me. I picked it up again two days after and trudge through.
One morning during her run, Lucy, a medical examiner, found a body slump over a chess table. She thought at first it was her next door neighbor and former teacher but the shoes were all wrong. The face was mutilated, you see, so recognition is impossible. On that same morning, she met Detective JD (Jack Daniel) Fitzpatrick. His mother is a drunk. Hence, his name. What kind of a mothet does this?
Moving on, the bodies kept on piling for Lucy to find. Just what is going on?
I love the Hero, JD but the heroine? not so much. Though, I understand the secrets she kept. I just felt detached with her. And that's my problem. I am sure, others would love it more.
After successfully reading three really long books by this author, i can definitely say that her writing is very formulaic. you know the main characters are gonna instantly want each other the MOMENT they meet and end up falling in love [LUST] within a week (hell, that’s even pushing it, 4 days max), because that’s how long the course of the story runs, that they will have tragic backstories filled with pity parties, and there’ll be a serial killer who will be close to either one or both of them and who will be gleefully sneering at them and causing mischief and mayhem while they hump each other at very inappropriate moments, and that the main female character will always fall for the killer’s trap at the end. C’est finis. This extremely pathetic yet effective formula aside, the stories are still entertaining, fast-paced, and keep you listening or turning the pages which is why i’m moving onto the next book lmao.
You belong to me by Karen Rose is the first book in her Baltimore series. A woman was brutally beaten and raped years ago and now a killer is targetting those with a connection to the crime and especially medical examiner Dr. Lucy Trask. A creepy thriller full of suspense and plenty of bodies. I loved the characters and especially the chemistry between Lucy and detective J.D.Fitzpatrick but found the book a bit too long. A chilling and suspenseful book.
THE NARRATOR: 3 stars. Her narratin' version of Lucy was not to my likin'. Lucy's accent, in the words of the book, 'It wasn’t quite Southern, but she wasn’t from the city. At least not originally.” so I guess I can't fault Gavin for makin' Lucy drop her 'g's when she talking. Do ALL Southerners drop their 'g's? Anyway, that did make me pause and revise my perception of the heroine as in my mind, she was 100% a big city girl.
Gavin is also one of those narrators that, to indicate someone is from the South, gives the character a twang plus a nasal quality. Sorry, but I don't find that attractive. I like the Southern accent but I don't like nasal voices.
Gavin also reads the chaeracter's thoughts as if he/she were speaking to someone. There is no change in pitch to differentiate the internal monologue (they are always just a few words) from the dialogue. I had my ebook with me otherwise I would be confused, wondering why the killer was saying that to his next victim.
However, Gavin is far superior to Laura Hicks who can sound like Donald Duck on helium. Sample: Suzanne Brockmann's Over The Edge
THE STORY: 4.5 STARS I liked this much better this time around. This is one book where, again, the audio made me enjoy the story more despite Gavin's not-so-great narration.
JD was just as appealing though in a low-key way. It's a nice change, once in a while, to have a hero that doesn't go caveman and in-your-face. The man that intrigued me this time, however, was Thorne. He didn't register the first time I read this book but this time I felt this was a man who held secrets (does anyone not have anything to hide in a KR books?) and his protective attitude towards Lucy did trigger an interest in me. I'm thinking he'll make a sexy alpha in his own book though I don't know if one is planned.
I did not like Clay Maynard here even though Rose tried to make his actions and decisions understandable. I'm still annoyed but how long he kept his own private investigations from the cops even when the normal, logical thing to do would be to report what he knows.
I know the fourth book is about Clay Maynard and I'm left scratching my head as to why Ms Rose chose him to be a hero! Why not Thorne?
--------------------------------------------------------------------- JUNE 2011 REVIEW:
I enjoyed this latest KR. It's not my favorite but the last few had been so disappointing in the romance dept that YB2M was a welcome relief. Detective JD Fitzpatrick with his quiet charm and all-round niceness was a surprisingly pleasant change from my usual bad-boy kink. Lucy was an okay heroine though I always wonder why romance heroines need so much convincing before they'll wear a wire or agree to a bodyguard. I mean...hey, she was going to be bait for a serial killer, a killer who had up to then killed ten people and cut out their hearts and sent them to her. And she still balks at wearing a wire coz of privacy issues. Thankfully, JD just laid it out for Lucy in that quiet, rational way of his and Lucy accepted it without further argument.
Like most, if not all KR's books (I have not read the last 3 or 4), the killings are violent and YB2M is pretty horrific. Though I enjoyed this enough to give it 4 stars, I still found many parts difficult to understand and piece together. I still don't understand the PI, Clay Maynard's part in the story. Why was he necessary to the plot? He and his assistants had created a new ID for the killer but at the time, they didn't know, of course. When Clay begins to suspect something was terribly, horribly wrong, why was he so reluctant to go to the police? In the end he did, anyway, and even though the reason could be he didn't want to be charged for creating an ID for someone, in the end he did suspect, or knew, that his client was a killer and he still refused to go to the police.
I'm hoping someone's review can help me piece together the PI's role in the story but for now, it seems unnecessary for him to have gone off tangent when he knew his client was dangerous.
Despite this tendency of KR to confound me with too many characters and seemingly unnecessary information about everyone and everything, I enjoyed this book enough to want to go and read the other books I missed - Scream for Me and Silent Scream...maybe another one or two more. I just hope that the next few books will also have the romance back alongside the murder investigation just like this one had.
Romantic Suspense / Crime Thrillers / Serial Killers Publication date : June 7, 2011
Medical examiner Dr. Lucy Trask (35) finds tortured body in front of her home. Soon its clear that someone is after her for the things that happened more than 20 years ago. Baltimore homicide detective J.D. Fitzpatrick must solve the murders before the killer goes after Lucy.
Yet another thiller where the heroine and the hero carry heavy baggage from their past. I don't know what to think of Lucy. She's talented, beautiful, sexy, she works as a medical examiner, she's also a music prodigy. As we learn about her past, we learn that she used to be violent and broke other people's noses. Solving problems with violence...its not cool! I felt like this story was swamped by too many sub-plots and characters. There are so many POVs that the characters development was quite weak, and most of them remain lifeless, flat. I especially disliked the villain's chapters. They were disgusting (hate to think what goes on in author's head when she write those gory murder scenes!). And they gave away some of the mystery and suspense (reader already knew about yet another victim to come). The villain's motivations for his sadistic actions were weak. He waited 21 years for his revenge? Why now? Why not sooner? Why those sadistic killings? The romance between J.D. and Lucy among all those discoverings of multilated bodies...weird.
I took this book to read without much of a expectation. And I was wrong. Great, great read! Mystery with everything you want from one: JD is a homicide inspector with a past and beautiful MD Lucy who has all kind of secrets about her. And a killer who has a personal motive. The rhythm of the story is fast and furious. The murders are bloody, gruesome and monstrous, so this book is not for people with weak heart or stomach because the author portrayed them vividly and true to the reality. Bodies are dropping left and right. In the middle of that mayhem and general confusion on to why those people and what's the connection with the MD, we have a strong attraction between main characters that even they find inappropriate, but life has a way of sneaking up on you, no matter the circumstances. Great, great read!
