A series of 47 short biblical pageants known as the “York Cycle of Mystery Plays,” or simply as t... more A series of 47 short biblical pageants known as the “York Cycle of Mystery Plays,” or simply as the “York Play,” the plays as they survive today are dated to 1476–77, recorded exactly 100 years after the first reference to pageants performed in York. The pageants celebrated the feast of Corpus Christi, involving episodes based on sacred history starting with the Creation and Fall of the Angels, and ending with Doomsday. From its inception the event in York has been associated with the trades and crafts guilds of the city, with single guilds, or consortia of guilds, bearing responsibility for the production of individual pageants
