The fool in King Lear is at times apparently weird and funny, but his behavioral, dialogical and situational intelligence, prudence and acumen peel off this apparent disposition. The fool in King Lear has no name or in other words and in my view it is the clown named as the fool. The fool in King Lear depicts wisdom wrapped in a clownish disguise, while the clowns of Waiting for Godot depict the foolishness of gestures, action, behavior, situation and conversation that is much thought provoking as well. Beckett’s clowns are very awkward in nature as they portray a gloomy image through their futile existence. Beckett’s clowns make a fool of themselves when they try to realize their aspiration, but failure of intention make things go absurd. On the other hand King Lear’s fool, who is a clown, makes fool of others or in other words tries to bring out the inner fool of Lear himself. The distorted revival of Shakespearian fool in Modern drama seems to be comparatively unconventional and whimsical as the element of Dark Comedy is more prevalent. In this paper I try to figure out the relevance of foolishness as exhibited in the two early mentioned dramas.

For instance, feminist Poets talks about the women emancipation but infect they help create a border between the women and not-women. Same is the case with Black poets when they talk about their culture and their identity; indirectly they are propagating their culture and indeed construct a border by alienating themselves from the rest of the world. Poetry creates borders as it divides the people in certain groups when it comes to the issues discussed in it and sometimes universal issues are dealt differently by poets which divides the people into groups instead of harmonizing society e.g. a romantic poet will give a difference portrayal of love while a realistic poet will try to depict his idea of love in a totally different manner. Poetry may dissolve psychological borders in certain ways but it certainly hardens the geographical borders and for this we can take example of “patriotic” (nationalistic) poetry. These days we do have categories of poetry; English poetry, American Poetry, Indian Poetry etc and further it has categories according to themes and then nature of the poetry also matters; whether it’s realistic, romantic, racial, national etc. So the question that I want to raise is that how a particular “thing/object” (poetry here) be a tool to harmonize society and dissolve borders when that object itself has a lot of classifications within it and divided into many sub-classes? Or you can take it in this way; how poetry can dissolve borders with having so many borders within it?
Now let us give a look to other side of picture where poetry seems to be the tool to dissolve borders. Projecting an individual’s ideas helps the rest of the people to know what he thinks or feel and through this the gaps could be narrowed down. Similarly, poetry deals with universal ideas thus it helps to put aside the useless talks of races, ethnicity etc and come together to enjoy a feeling of being humans.
In my essay, I mainly focuses upon the evolution/construction of borders through poetry and I’ll slightly talk about the other aspect of poetry i.e. the force used to dissolve borders.
In conclusion, poetry evolves borders whether willingly or unwillingly and it makes the people capsule themselves into certain ideas preferable to their nature.
