I am a Reformed Baptist missionary sent to serve Santo Domingo, Ecuador. I serve as pastor of Iglesia Bautista Gracia Soberana in Santo Domingo, and lead our church-based pastoral training program. I have had the privilege of teaching in pastoral training programs in Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Cuba, Nicaragua, along with other countries. I am married to Ariel and we have four children: Lilah, Liam, Nina, and August.

Closed to All but One: The Canon and Messianic Expectation in the Second Temple Period

After examining the current state of canon studies and establishing some preliminary definitions,... more After examining the current state of canon studies and establishing some preliminary definitions, this paper will examine both internal evidence of canonical-consciousness within the HB and external evidence of the state of the OT canon in the Second Temple period. In essence, this paper will propose that the post-exilic and pre-Maccabean era saw a limited closing of the OT canon accompanying the cessation of prophecy. This limited closing served to exclude other religious writings produced in the Second Temple period as being important but of a lesser authority, and left a particular opening that would be filled by the long-awaited coming of the “prophet like Moses” (Deut 18:15-19). This will explain both the authoritative status of what are now known as biblical writings that already existed and also the expectation in sections of Judaism for further revelation from God through the Messiah and his forerunner.

Though we often view the world in a more optimistic way, these rose-colored glasses only blind us... more Though we often view the world in a more optimistic way, these rose-colored glasses only blind us to the countless sufferers all around us. In fact, for many people that silent sufferer of abuse and its devastating effects is as close to us as the house we live in and the spouse we have vowed to love and to hold in sickness and in health, in sorrow and in joy. Though this is the case, many spouses may be completely unaware of the suffocating burden that their spouse carries each day. When they finally receive a glimpse of the pain, they can easily be overwhelmed by the desire to help but the feeling of complete inability to say or do anything meaningful. For this reason, this article seeks to give practical counsel to spouses of victims of abuse as they accompany their spouse in recovery and healing. This article will identify the nature and effects of abuse, put abuse into the context of the biblical storyline, and will conclude with practical principles and Gospel hope.

An Exegetical, Theological, and Practical Analysis of 1 Samuel 1:1-2:11

First and Second Samuel are a single book in the Hebrew Bible. In light of this, 1 Samuel 1-2 ser... more First and Second Samuel are a single book in the Hebrew Bible. In light of this, 1 Samuel 1-2 serves as an introduction to both parts. This passage, with its important shift from narrative register to poetic reminiscence, plays an important part in introducing the next stage in God’s redemptive plan wherein he raises up and puts down, and uses the most unlikely and “unworthy” of persons to fulfill his divine plans. It not only serves to give the back story for the main character found in the book before David—Samuel—but it also lays out the major themes of the book that are also found across the OT. Though this passage most immediately prepares the reader for the coming of David, the full context of the book, however, leads the reader to look beyond David to David’s greater son, the promised seed who will sit on the throne forever in 2 Samuel 7. This paper, therefore, will seek to give an exegetical, theological, and practical look at 1 Samuel 1:1-2:11 using the method provided by Jason DeRouchie in his book, How to Understand and Apply the Old Testament: Twelve Steps from Exegesis to Theology.

This variation can be seen in changes in the use of certain lexemes, syntactical structures, shifts in morphology, among other types of changes. Though the existence of this variation is beyond dispute, there has been many debates in the last two-hundred years of scholarship over the exact way to interpret and explain this variation.

"Fellow-Laborers for the Truth:" A Biblical Perspective on the Relationship between Missionaries and Supporters from 2 and 3 John

No amount of diversification will shield us from it. For the person whose hope is in this life an... more No amount of diversification will shield us from it. For the person whose hope is in this life and in temporal things, this is a bleak and depressing thought. However, God's Word teaches that these temporal things can be exchanged for and invested in a treasure that never inflates, diminishes, tarnishes nor can it ever be taken away (Mat 6:19-21). There are many important ways in which Christians can invest their temporal and fleeting resources into things of eternal value; however, the eternal investment that is the theme of this article is found in the teaching of 2 and 3 John and their call to financially support missions. These two short letters give us a glorious perspective on missionary support that has important applications for how both missionaries and supporters should view this relationship.

What did the early church think about the nature of Scripture? Would they be in agreement with mo... more What did the early church think about the nature of Scripture? Would they be in agreement with modern evangelicals and their affirmations of the inspiration and inerrancy of Scripture? This book looks at one often forgotten second-century father, Theophilus of Antioch, who used the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments in order to defend the Christian faith. Scripture has a foundational role in his arguments and in the very structure of his work. This book examines Theophilus’ explicit affirmations about Scripture and his rhetorical use of Scripture in order to offer a systematic presentation of his doctrine of Scripture. It shows how Theophilus viewed the necessity, authority, inspiration, antiquity and consistency of Scripture. Each of these affirmations not only form part of Theophilus’ explanation of the Christian faith, they also serve to show Christianity’s superiority over the pagan religion and philosophy of his day.
