Therefore, a study was conducted in Maigatari Local Government Area of Jigawa State to determine some morphometric characteristics of Red Sokoto and Sahel goats. A total of 250 goats (187 Red Sokoto and 63 Sahel) of mixed sex and age were used for the study. The animals were sampled from Maigatari main livestock market. Data generated were subjected to simple descriptive, analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation analysis and stepwise linear regression. The coefficients of variation obtained for the parameters ranged from 8.96 % for wither height to 56.89 % for udder circumference. Red Sokoto had mean BW, BCS, BL, HG, WH, UL, UC, TL and TC of 20.58 kg, 3.20, 22.45 cm, 25.28 cm, 22.93 cm, 3.48 cm, 5.99 cm, 4.97 cm and 7.88 cm, respectively. The corresponding values for Sahel were 22.91 kg, 3.00, 23.58 cm, 25.07 cm, 24.55 cm, 4.14 cm, 7.06 cm, 4.75 cm and 7.52 c...

Multistage sampling was adopted to select a total of 300 sheep comrison of 99 rams and 201 ewes. Body condition score was determined twice a day by two assessors using the standard procedure. The experiment was conducted using a cross factor design. Model III analysis of variance was carried out to determine the between sheep and inter and intra-assessor variations in the trait. The results shows a significant (P<0.01) effects of rams and ewes on the body condition score. It is concluded that repeatability and reproducibility of BCS were very high (0.828-0.982 and 0.791-0.939 for repeatability and reproducibility, respectively). A total of 220 unsexed day old Marshall Broiler line were assigned to five dietary treatments each replicated four times in a completely randomised design (CRD). All data generated were subjected to one way analysis of variance. Results indicated thatbirds fed 5% ARM had 10% and 9% higher (P<0.05) carcass and eviscerated weights compared to those fed the control diet. Inclusion of ARM in the diets affected most of the carcass characteristics and internal organ weights positively (P<0.05). However, birds fed higher levels of ARM (15 and 20%) had 62% higher (P<0.05) abdominal fat than those fed the control diet. In conclusion, 5% AwaraResidue Meal (ARM) can be incl...

A total of 460kids (219 males and 241 females) were used to obtain the following parameters; live weight (LW), body length (BL), chest girth (CG), wither height (WH), leg length (LL), loin girth (LG), ear length (EL) and face length (FL). The animals were sampled from four local markets across the study area (Kashere, Kumo, Malam Sidi and Kwadom). Data generated were subjected to descriptive statistics, analysis of variance, Pearson’s correlation and linear regression analyses. The coefficients of variation of the variables observed ranged from 21.14 % for body weight to 7.86 % for chest girth. The mean LW, BL, CG, WH, LL, LG, EL and FL were 11.09 kg, 37.94 cm, 50.95 cm, 43.84 cm, 14.21 cm, 54.47 cm, 11.13 cm and 8.23 cm, respectively. Location had effect on leg (P<0.01), ear a...

A total of 400 eggs were used for this study. They were obtained from two strains of helmeted guinea fowl (Pearl and Belgium) managed intensively to generate the following parameters; egg weight (EWT), egg length (EL), egg width (EW), shell thickness (ST), shell weight (SWT), albumen height (SH), albumen weight (AWT), yolk height (YH), yolk weight (YWT) and Haugh unit (HU). Data generated were analyzed using independent sample t-test while the relationships among the traits were estimated using Pearson’s correlation analysis. The mean values of 42.26 g, 54.63 mm, 43.36 mm, 0.39 mm, 4.62 g, 5.29 mm, 26.08 g, 15.11 mm, 15.13 g and 83.49 for EWT, EL, EW, ST, SWT, AH, AWT, YH, YWT and HU were recorded in Pearl strain while the corresponding values for the Belgium type were 55.39 g, 53.56 mm, 45.90 mm, 0.52 mm, 4.95 g, 6.84 mm, 34.03 g, 15.88 mm, 17.00 g and 8...

A total of 450 sheep (200 males and 250 females) with varied age groups (>1 year = 0PPI, < 1 year = 1PPI, 2 years = 2PPI, < 2-3 years = 3PPI and 3.5-4 years and above = 4PPI) were used. The traits measured include; Live weight (LW), face length (FL), horn length (HL), ear length (EL), neck length (NL), girth circumference (GC), body length (BL), wither height (WH), leg length (LL), Loin girth (LG), rump width (RW), canon circumference (CC), tail length (TL), testicular circumference (TC), testicular length (TCL), teat length (TTL) and udder circumference (UC). Data generated were subjected to descriptive statistics and multivariate analysis of variance and Pearson correlation analysis between traits were estimated. The coefficient of variation of the variables ranged from 6.43 % for testicular length to 27.33 % for teat length.

A total of 250 cows were used for the study to determine the influence of sex, age at first service and gestation length on this trait (birth weight). Influence of calf's sex on gestation length was also assessed. Data generated were subjected to analysis of variance using the general linear procedure of SPSS, version 23 (2015). Significantly different means were compared using Least Significant Difference (LSD). The relationship between birth weight and gestation length was estimated using Pearson's correlation and simple linear regression analyses of the same software. The overall mean birth weight and gestation length were 23.40±0.43 kg and 286.51±0.55 days, respectively. Significant effects of sex (P<0.05) and gestation length (P<0.001) were observed on birth weight. Male calves were heavier at birth than females and higher value for this trait (birth weight) was observed in calves with longer gestation length (291-295 days). Significant effect of sex on gestation length (P<0.01) was noticed. Males had longer gestation length than females. Significant interaction effect of sex and gestation length on birth weight (P<0.05) was also evident. Males were heavier at birth with longer gestation length than females. The correlation coefficient (R) observed between birth weight and gestation length was high, positive and significant (0.49; P<0.01), while the prediction accuracy (R 2) between the two traits was low. Conclusively, sex had effect on weight of calves at birth and that this trait cannot be predicted by the gestation length.
