As a representative of undernutrition, stunting has become a severe public problem. Stunting was a manifestation of chronic malnutrition found in under-five-year-old children. The short stature of the children would hamper growth and development and might affect the disease progression in the future. Not only stunting but also obesity has also become a new issue in low-middle income countries (LMICs). The shift of urbanization heightened the prevalence of obesity in LMICs. This narrative review highlighted the increment of malnutrition in LMICs based on the literature findings during the COVID-19 pandemic and some possible factors related to the outcome. The articles for this review were obtained from verified international journal articles in the National Centre for Biotechnology Information (NCBI)/PubMed and Cochrane Library website. Eleven papers were collected to address malnutrition during the pandemic. Some related factors are: socioeconomic, dietary intake, sanitation and hygiene, health facility, and self-isolation contributed to the double malnutrition problem. Therefore, it is mandatory to suggest the appropriate approach to mitigate malnutrition in children by enriching nutrition education and knowledge programs to assist in resolving the public health problem.

Iron deficiency harms children's cognitive and motor development, increase morbidity. Ascorbic acid prevents stomach iron accumulation, inhibiting nonheme absorption. Iron-deficient kids don't eat enough. 65 to 72% of children's daily calories are consumed at home, hence the environment is crucial. The purpose of this study is to see if the iron and vitamin C consumption of children aged 2 to 6 in Pejagalan, North Jakarta, is related to their eating environment. There were 191 samples examined. To assess children's intake, 2x24h food recalls were performed. A modified version of the NHANES CBQ was used to assess the home food environment. For each response, 1 signified "never" and 4 meant "always." SPSS Version 20 was used to perform Spe...

Fortification and supplementation program aims to meet the requirement of micronutrients by providing synthetic formula. The Indonesian government has applied iron-folic acid fortification (IFA) in flour. Moreover, the IFA supplementation program was given to vulnerable groups, pregnant mothers and women at reproductive age, including adolescent girls. The program has been applied for almost five decades, but the micronutrients deficiencies remain high. This study aims to review effects of the supplementation and fortification to vulnerable groups in Indonesia. This is necessary to to determine their effectiveness within a specified period since the program has been applied for decades and to assess whether an additional program is needed or not. The data of this study were collected from verified international journal a...

Dietary changes during pregnancy (DP) and post-partum are essential for women’s nutrition status ... more Dietary changes during pregnancy (DP) and post-partum are essential for women’s nutrition status and the health of their offspring. We compared the diet quality DP and at 3-year post-partum (3YPP) and assessed the relationship between maternal diet quality and nutritional status using a prospective cohort design among women in East Jakarta. In total, 107 women were recruited from the study in 2014 and followed up at 3YPP in 2018. The mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC), weight, and height were evaluated. Food consumption data were collected from repeated 24-h recalls. The validated US Diet Quality Index-Pregnancy (DQI-P) scores with eight components were calculated using the food consumption data and compared between DP and 3YPP. Associations of the DQI-P score with the MUAC and weight gain DP and body mass index (BMI) at 3YPP were analyzed using multivariable linear and logistic regression. The median of the DQI-P score DP was significantly higher than at 3YPP [35 (27; 42) versus 27...

However, defining IUGR by suitable field methods remains a challenge. A maternal-child Risk-Approach- Strategy (during 1988-1989) and follow-on Tanjungsari Cohort Study (TCS) (1989-1990), aimed to generate a practical classification of IUGR and explore its usage in predicting growth, mortality and morbidity of infants in the cohort. STUDY DESIGN Some 3892 singleton live-birth infants were followed. IUGR was defined by birth weight (BW) and length (BL) classified as: acute, chronic, non-IUGR or 'probably preterm'. Growth, mortality, and survival curve were calculated to prove that the classification identified the most vulnerable infants. Fever >3 days and diarrhoea were assessed based on IUGR classification, sex, exclusive breastfeeding, and environmental factors. RESULTS IUGR infant weight and length did not catch-up with the non-IUGR in the first year. Infant mortalit...

Many studies show that community empowerment and nutrition education are effective at reducing the risk of malnutrition when combined with attractive tools and appropriate nutrition and parenting messages. Therefore, we developed innovative picture storybooks as a fun learning tool to equip teachers and parents with a way to improve their understanding and awareness of the quality of early childhood dietary habits and social behavior. The study consisted of three stages, including formative research, book development, and evaluation. Our formative research triangulated information on preferences and key messages on food, nutrition, parenting, and child characteristics through focus group discussions (FGDs), in-depth interviews (IDIs), and observations of school food environments. The FGDs were held for the children (n=6), teachers (n=6), and mothers (n=6). The IDIs explored opinions from a story teller, a nutritionist, a communication expert, a child psychologist, and an illustrator team. Finally, books were developed by the researcher and evaluated by the expert team (n=10) and teachers (n=8). The study took place in early childhood education centers and kindergartens in Central Jakarta's urban areas. Children preferred picture storybooks that represented a unique condition of magical power and provided characters from the fantasy genre. Following the IDI's recommendations and observations, three picture storybook series were developed: healthy snacking, integrated with messages to stimulate a child's disciplined behavior; eating vegetables, especially green ones, with the motivation to increase truthfulness; and a healthy eating portion guide with a variety of foods combined with messages to motivate grateful attitudes. The book content integrated key messages on nutrition, parenting, and social behavior with unique characters and colorful pictures. The expert team recommended the appropriate development of the picture storybooks and emphasized paying attention to clear genres, text structure, content, themes and ideas, language, vocabulary, illustrations and graphic design, and messages delivered. The picture storybooks present key messages on nutrition, parenting, and child behavior using an attractive, colorful and unique appearance. These books can be used to teach early childhood nutrition and parenting intervention by integrating them with other approaches such as story-telling, eating meals together, and other supporting activities.

However, well-documented information on this issue is lacking. We investigated the dietary quality of young Indonesian children and assessed the relationship to serum adiponectin levels as an early marker of NCDs. Eighty-five (44 girls and 41 boys) Indonesian preschool-age children in East Jakarta were included in this study. Dietary intake data were gathered by collecting repeated 24-hour recalls for one weekday and one day during the weekend, which were then further converted into participants’ Healthy Eating Index (HEI) 2015 scores. Meanwhile, an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was performed to determine the serum adiponectin level. A multiple regression analysis was performed to assess the association between the HEI 2015 score and serum adiponectin, adjusting for potential confounders. The mean HEI 2015 score was 33.2 ± 8.3 points, which was far below t...
