Urban environment

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A busy intersection in East Austin’s entertainment area is a much-needed safety upgrade. In 2015, there were 20 crashes at the intersection of East Sixth Street and Waller Street alone. Due to the significant rise in pedestrian traffic in the area, the city’s Transportation Department decided to install an all-way stop along with highly visible pedestrian markings. Instead of regular white paint, the dept painted colorful polka dots to clearly delineate pedestrian space.

Crosswalks | Overseas

School bus yellow was specifically formulated for use on school buses in North America in 1939. Now known as National School Bus Glossy Yellow, it was originally called National School Bus Chrome, the lead-containing chrome yellow pigment. Australian 'Red Rattler' carriages were used from late 1800s to1980s. The design, known as American Suburban or 'Cowboy' cars, featured Tuscan Red until replaced by Indian Red in 1976. Tuscan Red was also used on train carriages throughout the US and Canada. Indian Red was part of the Victorian colour palette recommended by the National Trust in Australia along with Brunswick Green, Cream and Slate Grey. Putting play back on the city agenda with PLAY[ground] - World Landscape Architecture World Landscape Architecture 2015.

This supergraphic weaves its way along two car-free blocks on Broadway between 36th and 39th Streets. It delineates a new ‘Urban Garden’ plaza that features cafes, planters, street furniture open to pedestrians only. The interwoven pattern represents the rich tapestry of people, businesses and history of the garment district in NYC. The Garment District Alliance commissioned the mural as part of their initiative to revitalize the district and it was designed and painted by Steed Taylor

Installations

Crosswalk design uses pairs of contrasting colours that attract attention plus white stripes painted with Resene FX Nightlight (glow-in-the-dark paint) that will enhance the effectiveness of the pedestrian crossing at night. Saturated Resene Lumbersider colours: Havoc, Bang, Bilbao, Outrageous, Lochmara, Wild Thing and Studio plus the diagonal pattern aim to improve pedestrian safety and calm traffic as per similar interventions overseas.
