Parts of Speech Card Sort / Google Slides and Google Forms
Students can work individually or with a group to sort cards based on their part of speech (noun, verb, adjective, adverb, conjunction, preposition, pronoun, interjection, article).Since 100 words is a lot to sort, teachers can divide the cards into groups to split among students or over a series of days. The self-grading Google Forms are also split into 10 with each Form covering 10 words. This makes them perfect for bell work, exit tickets, or formative assessment!
Appositives & Audience Awareness Exit Tickets / Google Slides
This is a set of 24 exit tickets that ask students to do two things: correctly punctuate an appositive and then make an inference about the writer's audience based on that appositive.Since we live in a digital world, the entire set is available in Google Slides so you can decide whether you want to use these cards digitally or whether you (like me) want to print, cut, and laminate.
Indefinite Pronoun Sort and Bookmark / Google Slides and Google Form
Includes 30 cards with a variety of indefinite pronouns.Students work alone, with a partner, or with a group to sort the indefinite pronouns base on whether they are singular, plural, or depending on context.Because of those tricky indefinite pronouns that depend on context, I have also included a bookmark that students can tape on to their desks, inside folders, or in interactive notebooks for easy reference.
Personal, Possessive, Interrogative, Reflexive, and Indefinite Pronoun Sort
Includes 60 cards with various personal, possessive, interrogative, reflexive, and indefinite pronouns. This many cards lends itself to two games: first, students can work alone, with partners, or with a group to sort the pronouns based on type.Or students can use only the personal pronoun cards and sort based on subjects and objects.
Concrete, Abstract, Compound, & Collective Noun Sort / Google Slides
Includes 24 cards with various concrete, abstract, compound, and collective nouns. Students work alone, with partners, or with a group to sort the types of nouns. This may seem like a low-level, low-stress games, but this is the first grammar game my freshmen play, so this is the game I use to establish norms and expectations for this kind of activity. To optimize this set for distance learning, I've included:an interactive matching game in the Google Slides.and a self-grading Google Form.

Are You Neglecting These 4 Skills in High School English?
In the past, I've neglected certain parts of ELA. Some skills I blew off. Others made me uncomfortable. And others I expected students to have before they arrived in my classroom. None of these are good reasons to write off academic skills. More than anything, these attitudes put my students at a disadvantage. Similarly, these attitudes also prevented me from making professional growth. And I'm hope that by sharing my mistakes, others can learn what NOT to overlook or neglect in ELA instruction

5 Myths About Teaching Grammar
I never expected that I would like teaching grammar. More importantly, my students believe that I live for grammar lessons. They think "grammar" is my entire personality, and that's okay. When they see my enthusiasm, they are automatically more engaged. And that's the first myth of teaching grammar: grammar does not have to be your entire personality. However, your students should believe you have a mad passion for correcting comma splices.
