The scope of the project is to determine, how 3D/4D modeling, simulation and visualization of products (artifacts), processes and organisations can support lean construction. The SBB plans to implement lean construction methods on their face-lifting and reshaping program of 400 regional railway stations with the aim to improve the quality and the reliability of the processes and to achieve considerable cost reductions [1].

We develop a BIM based functional design an ordering process (FDOP) to shorten the latency in collaboration between architects, engineers and contractors and perform rapid information and knowledge exchange in early project design phases. The executable information delivery manual (xIDM) is extended based on previous work to host the FDOP and to enable automated filtering and checking processes. A practical use case is developed and studied to explain the concept in details.

Sustainable office buildings in steel construction. Within the research project P881 “Sustainable office and administration buildings in steel and steel-composite construction” planning tools and methods for the design and evaluation of such buildings are being developed by an interdisciplinary research team. In addition to ecological and economic issues, also architectural, socio-cultural and socio-technological criteria are being considered. The benefit from flexibility and its evaluation constitute main aspects influencing the structure and the future marketability of the buildings.Relevant topics and issues for sustainable design of office buildings are being discussed in this paper. Based on diverse ways of usage, development and trends in the structural organization of office buildings, socio-technological and socio-cultural requirements are formulated. Strategies for the life cycle-oriented economic evaluation are being described including an added value assessment. Related research fields in building construction such as façade, building physics, technical building equipment as well as the development of sustainable structures in steel construction are being discussed. The intended instruments for the planning phase of design concepts and their ecological and economic evaluation are being introduced.

From a former regionally organized branch of domestic economy acting in mostly confined markets an internationally operating industry is currently emerging. International competitiveness on the investors' side and performance competition of the AEC industry are increasingly dominating the line of business. In this environment, new processes and organizations with partly virtual collaboration gain in importance. In order to prepare students for these challenges, the "Project Oriented Learning Environment" (POLE) has been created as a novel curriculum project at the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland and an international network of collaborating universities has been established. This paper will present the concept of POLE as well as findings and experiences of the simultaneous projects with students working in multi-disciplinary and locally distribut...

In collaboration with the CAD vendor and developer cadwork informatik AG our research focuses on technology, its intro¬duction into the market the effects and difficulties of the tool use and the induced process changes. We will describe the methodlogy, the expected outcomes of the enhancements, the research approach, initial findings and the further proceedings. In the first tier cadworks introduces an intuitive integrated 4D modeler called (LexoCad or Baubit CAD) for contractors which is commercially available since one year. Analogue to playing with building blocks users create 3D building models and 4D phasing models for the construction of the building directly from 2D pdf drawings. The expected outcome are that the virtual building blocks serve as a test-bed for constructabilit...

The sequencing is based on the commonly used component-activity-resource relations taking structural and process con- straints into account. For the optimization a genetic algorithm approach was developed, imple- mented and successfully applied to several real life steel constructions. In this contribution we discuss the application of the discrete event simulator including its optimization capabilities on a 4D process model of a steel structure of an automobile recycling facility.

Initial findings suggest that Process Design Pattern may have the potential to intuitively support ICT based lean construction. We initiated a “Process Archeology” in order to reveal the requirements for tools that can support the planning, simulation and control of lean construction methods. First findings show that existing tools provide only limited support and therefore, we started to develop new methodologies and technologies to overcome these shortcomings. Through the introduction of Process Design Patterns, we intent to establish process thinking in the interdisciplinary POP design. Optimized construction processes may be synthesized with semi-automatic methods by applying Process Design Patterns on building structures. By providing process templates that integrate problem solution and expert knowledge, Process Design Patterns may have the potential to ensure high quality process models.
