I shall be reviewing some equipments that I have in my kitchen from time to time. This post in particular is about gadgets that I own to either core, slice or peel an apple or do two particular tasks together.
This one is from IKEA and it doesn’t peel the apple but does do quite a good job coring and slicing.
As you can see, the wedges that come out from the slicers are balanced and well-proportionate. But this also depends on how you position the corer before you push it down. It might take a few practise but I don’t think that’s big of a problem for anyone. I haven’t tested this out on huge Fuji apples yet, so far it works on the middle-sized apples.
The core comes out pretty clean and even. This was actually a gift from a friend who knows I love to own funky things for the kitchen. When my mother saw this she was like, ‘I would not go and purposely purchase this thing to slice apples. A knife is good enough.’ Well, in that sense I’d have to agree. I would not purposely go and buy this thing but now that I have it, I do make good use of it. I suppose for people in the food business when you have apple pies on the menu, this does come in handy.
Before owning the IKEA apple slicer-corer, I was using this gadget from Cold Storage to core my apples (pic down). It doesn’t slice or peel. Although it’s very effective in piercing through the flesh, the diameter of the cutter is much smaller and therefore you still get some bits and pieces of the hard core left behind.
With this though, you don’t just core apples but pears as well. I have been to weddings where they use green apples as a decorative pieces by sticking a candle in the middle. This tool will do a clean job cleaning out the middle.
Now, comes this fancy doohickey;
Although during a demonstration it seemed to work perfectly, I found out at home that this tool only performs when circumstances are right. Like the apple has to be proportionate or the size has to be right. When we tested it out on apples that are not so round, the peeler kinda dug right into the flesh. And the corer was not too effective either. When you turn the handle, the apple is suppose to go through the corer and then you’ll have a peeled and cored apple, all done simultaneously. We tried it on few more apples and figured that it wasn’t as good as it claimed. I was disappointed though. I really wanted it to work but then again, we probably got an inferior brand. This gadget could apparently peel potatoes too. But again, not all kinds of potatoes. Only large ones with skin that is considerably thick. Baby potatoes won’t work here.
