This study investigated Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Mathematics classrooms in FCT Abuja: Teac... more This study investigated Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Mathematics classrooms in FCT Abuja: Teachers’ opinions, practices and challenges. The objectives of the study were to seek teachers’ opinions, practices and challenges of using AI in Mathematics classrooms. Population of the study comprised of 256 Mathematics teachers in 70 public Senior Secondary Schools in Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. Multistage sampling procedure was used to select 105 that participated in this study. The instrument used for data collection was questionnaire which was validated by the expert in the field of Mathematics Education and an expert in ICT area. The reliability index of the instrument using Cronbach Alpha stood at 0.85. Data were analysed using mean for research questions while independent t-test statistics and ANOVA was used to test null hypotheses. The findings showed that AI systems and applications could be used as an educational tool to facilitate teaching and learning of Mathematics. The findings also revealed challenges faced by Mathematics teachers in applying AI systems and applications, among them are lack of technical infrastructure, epileptic power supply, inadequate training to effectively integrate AI systems in Mathematics teaching and learning among others. Additionally, the findings revealed no statistically significant difference in the mean scores of Mathematics teachers’ opinions on the use of AI systems in teaching based on gender; however, statistically significant differences were found in the mean scores of the respondents, which is challenges faced by them when using AI systems based on academic qualifications and years of experience. Based on findings, it was recommended among others that government should provide necessary AI tools for teachers, conduct training for teachers and partner with AI developed countries to organize remote training for both male and female teachers on the use of AI systems.

The study examined the assessment of Class-Wide Peer Tutoring (CWPT) strategy on the achievement ... more The study examined the assessment of Class-Wide Peer Tutoring (CWPT) strategy on the achievement of slow learners in Mathematics in public Senior Secondary Schools in Abuja, Nigeria. The research design employed was a quasi-experimental pre-test and post-test. The population of the study comprised 10,936 SS II students. A total of 46 slow learners of public Senior Secondary Schools selected by simple random sampling technique participated in the study. The instrument used for data collection was the Mathematics Achievement Test (MAT), validated by experts and subjected to reliability using Cronbach Alpha, which yielded a reliability index of 0.84. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions and Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that the slow learners in the CWPT group (experimental) achieved significantly better than those in traditional method groups (control), the study also revealed no significant difference in the mean achievement scores of male and female slow learners taught Mathematics using CWPT in public Senior Secondary Schools Abuja. Based on the findings, it was recommended that the use of the CWPT method should be encouraged through workshops and seminars in schools among Mathematics teachers and CWPT method should be incorporated into the mathematics curriculum as one of the instructional strategies for teaching and learning.

The study examined the influence of mathematics teachers' qualification and experience on student... more The study examined the influence of mathematics teachers' qualification and experience on students' academic achievement in Senior Secondary Schools in Federal Capital Territory Abuja, Nigeria. The objectives of the study was to find the difference in the achievement of mathematics students that were taught by qualified and unqualified, experienced and inexperienced and male and female teachers in secondary schools. Population of the study comprised of 256 mathematics teachers. Multistage sampling procedure which involved simple random and purposive sampling techniques were used to select 75 mathematics teachers that took part in this study. The instruments used for data collection were questionnaire and 2022 end of the term SS II mathematics results. Data was analyzed using frequency counts, percentages and independent t-test statistics. The findings revealed that there was significant differences in the achievement of mathematics students between those taught by qualified/experienced teachers and those taught by unqualified/inexperienced teachers and there was no significant difference in the achievement of mathematics students between those taught by male and female teachers in Senior Secondary Schools Abuja. Based on the findings, it was recommended that FCT Education Secretariat and other stakeholders should ensure that only qualified teachers are employed, improved teachers' working condition to retain experienced teachers in the service and prospective female teachers should be encouraged to study mathematics so as to break barrier that mathematics only meant for their male counterparts.

The objective of the study was to find out how effective is MTA in teaching of mathematics in senior secondary schools. Research design used was quasi-experimental of pre-test and post-test. Population of the study comprised of all SS II students of Government Secondary School in Gwagwalada Area Council, Abuja. The sample of 152 students, comprised 68 male and 84 female, were selected randomly from Government Secondary School Hajj Camp Gwagwalada, Abuja. The instrument for data collection was Algebraic Fractions Achievement Test (AFAT) which was validated by the experts in the Department of Science and Environmental Education, Mathematics unit and Measurement and Evaluation in the Department of Educational Foundations all in the Faculty of Education, University of Abuja. The reliability of the AFAT using the Cronbach Alpha technique yielded 0.88. Mean and standard deviation were used to analyse research questions and Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Result of the analysis revealed that there was significant difference in the mean achievement scores of the students taught Algebraic Fractions using Modern Teaching Approach (MTA) and those taught using the traditional method in favour of experimental group and there was no significant difference in the mean achievement scores of male and female students taught Algebraic Fractions using MTA in Gwagwalada Area Council public senior secondary schools. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that the use of Modern Teaching Approach (MTA) should be encouraged by mathematics teachers and other teachers in secondary schools, Stakeholders in education should, from time to time, organise seminars and workshops on Modern Teaching Approach (MTA) for teachers in order to meet with 21 st century instructional delivery.

Covid-19 pandemic has caused education disruptions and prolonged school closures all around the w... more Covid-19 pandemic has caused education disruptions and prolonged school closures all around the world, which affected nearly 95% of the world's student population. This paper holistically looks into Post COVID-19 crisis: Effects and Transformation of Secondary Education in Nigeria. Theoretical frame, Concept of Secondary Education, COVID-19 Effects on Secondary School Students were x-rayed and some of the resultant effects that may likely occur after COVID-19 were highlighted. They are: Secondary School Student dropout, Underage pregnancy and Academic setback. Post COVID-19 Era and Secondary Education System Transformation was discussed where the paper divides into stages. The first phase explained how the schools could adapt with Post COVID-19 Era and set a template for academic process, second phase highlighted how to build education continuity in terms of academic recovery and the third phase looked into speedy education recovery of what had been built in the previous stages. Combining these stages would bring about academic transformation in secondary schools in Nigeria. Conclusion was made that the stages suggested in this paper, if properly adopted would bring about secondary education transformation in Nigeria.

The instrument of the study was questionnaire tagged "Determinant of Students' Academic Performance Questionnaire" (DSAPQ) that was structured in the pattern of Likert 4-point rating scale of agreement. The reliability coefficient of the rating scale was 0.82. Mean was used to answer the research questions, while ANOVA was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. From the study, it was observed that provision of relevant mathematics textbooks, regular payment of school fees, students' motivation to learn mathematics, teacher's interest for teaching profession, teacher's teaching methodology, learners' interest in mathematics, constant studying of mathematics, peer group influence among others are the determinant factors affecting students' academic performance in mathematics among Senior Secondary Schools in Abuja. Based on the findings, it was recommended that students should always be regular in the class, encouraged to have passion for mathematics, workshops or seminars should be organized for mathematics teachers on methods of teaching and other aspects that can improve teaching, parents should endeavour to provide enabling environment for their wards to study at home and visit the school regularly to check their wards academic performance in mathematics.

Higher education in many developing countries including Nigeria confronts many problems. Curricula are often dominated by liberal subjects thereby making education provided by higher education institutions in the country more of liberal education than vocational, technical and other forms of entrepreneurship education. The high number of unemployed graduates in the country is becoming unbearable by the day. The cause of this is not unconnected with issues surrounding curriculum in Nigeria universities. This paper reviews those aims and objectives of higher education that have to do with curriculum issues and development. The definition and concept of higher education, problems facing higher education in Nigeria, concept of curriculum and some of the challenges facing implementation of university curriculum are considered. The paper then submits that if the higher institutions in the country operate within the content of education policy, there would be unprecedented improvements in the skill acquisition among the Nigeria graduates. Recommendations on ensuring productive implementation of university curriculum are consequently made.

Towards achieving scientific and technological advancement, we need nothing but good performance ... more Towards achieving scientific and technological advancement, we need nothing but good performance in mathematics at all levels of education. The negative performance of students towards an educational aims and objectives could be associated to the low motivation of teachers most especially in the area of mathematics. In order to achieve this, this study investigates motivation of teachers as it affects teaching of mathematics in government secondary schools in F.C.T Abuja. This study adopted both descriptive research design, the research design in this study used an ex post factor research design. The study population comprised of mathematics teachers in government schools in F.C.T Abuja. The study used a self-administered questionnaire to collect data from 100 mathematics teachers who were selected by the use of simple random sampling while the selected schools were chosen through purposive sampling. The study results revealed that majority of the teachers (68.0%) under study are not satisfied with their condition of service. Three quarter of teachers (81.0%) under study are not satisfied with the incentives attached to their salaries while majority of the respondents (65.0%) are frown at irregular promotion of teachers. It was observed that the condition of service of teachers, teachers' incentives, and teachers' promotion of in-service training have a great effect on the students' performance in mathematics.

This study assessed human and material resources for teaching and learning of mathematics in seni... more This study assessed human and material resources for teaching and learning of mathematics in senior secondary schools Abuja, Nigeria. The purpose was to identify qualities of teachers, instructional resources and ascertain conditions of the instructional resources available for effective teaching and learning of mathematics in Senior Secondary Schools in Abuja. Three research questions and three null hypotheses guided the study. This study adopted descriptive survey research design. The population of the study consists of 358 mathematics teachers in the six Area Councils of the Federal Capital Territory Abuja. About 50% of the total population was randomly selected which gives 180 mathematics teachers as sample size. The instrument for data collection was a structured questionnaire and a checklist. A total of 180 copies of the questionnaires were distributed, 155 were retrieved and used for analysis using mean and standard deviation statistics for research questions; t-test statistics was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 levels of significance. The findings of the study revealed that qualified mathematics teachers and materials resources were inadequate for effective teaching and learning of mathematics in Senior Secondary Schools and the available instructional resources were not in good condition in Senior Secondary Schools in Abuja. It was recommended that FCT Administration should ensure that qualified applicants who studied Mathematics Education are recruited to teach mathematics; instructional resources for teaching and learning of mathematics should be provided by Education Secretariat through Secondary Education Board (SEB) down to the school principal; Monitoring and Evaluation unit should sensitize the school principals and teachers on the need to put more emphasis on utilisation and improvisation of instructional resources in teaching and learning of mathematics and above all, mathematics and other subjects at all level, should be subjected to accreditation and reaccreditation based on the adequacy of facilities, textbooks and other curricula elements by FCT Education Secretariat and other examining bodies from time to time.

The research work is carried out on an assessment of senior secondary schools mathematics curricu... more The research work is carried out on an assessment of senior secondary schools mathematics curriculum implementation in Federal Capital Territory Abuja. Research design used for this study was descriptive survey. Population of the study comprised of 917 mathematics teachers which include supervisors from inspectorate, out of which 270 mathematics teachers and 30 inspectors totalling 300 respondents were randomly selected for this study. Data collected were analyzed using simple frequency and percentage for demographic information of the respondents and chi-square statistics for research hypotheses which were tested at 0.05 level of significance. From the findings, suggested methodologies in mathematics curriculum were not appropriate for the effective implementation of mathematics curriculum; most of the suggested instructional materials were not suitable for mathematics contents; teachers' qualification had significant effect on implementation of mathematics curriculum and overcrowded classroom also had effect on implementation of mathematics curriculum in senior secondary schools Abuja, Nigeria. Based on the findings, it was recommended, among others, that schools should have all the means necessary for a curriculum to be implemented the way it is originally intended. Hence, teachers should be supported with rich and satisfactory conditions in classrooms.
The main purpose of this study was to assess Nigerian prospective mathematics teachers' knowledge... more The main purpose of this study was to assess Nigerian prospective mathematics teachers' knowledge of fractions. This study adopted descriptive research design using ex-post facto type. The study population comprised of all 300L prospective mathematics teachers in F.C.T College of Education, Zuba Abuja. The study used Fraction Knowledge Test (FKT) and a self-administered questionnaire to collect data from 68 prospective mathematics teachers who were selected by the use of simple random sampling. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple regressions at 0.05 level of significance. Result of the findings revealed that prospective teachers displayed better fraction knowledge on procedure than on conception; they had difficulty in division of fractions because of their inadequate knowledge in multiplicative thinking and their fraction procedural knowledge moderately correlated with their problem solving. Based on the findings, it was recommended that universities and colleges of education in Nigeria should, as a matter of urgency, help prospective teachers to develop deep understanding of mathematics (especially fraction concept) that they need for their future teaching and proper monitoring of teaching activities in both primary and secondary schools school be intensified.

The population of the study was limited to all senior secondary school teachers in six Area councils of the FCT. Stratified random sampling technique was adopted to select 2 schools in each of the six Area councils and 25 teachers were randomly selected in each selected school totalling 300 respondents. Descriptive survey method was adopted. Three research questions were asked and analyzed using frequency counts and mean. The data gathered were further analyzed and interpreted to arrive at findings which showed that high rate of transfer occurs in FCT Senior Secondary Schools; teachers’ transfer affects students’ academic performance; teachers sometimes voluntarily request for transfer and principals sometimes seek transfer of erring staff. Recommendations were suggested that there should inconvenient allowances for the transferred teachers in FCT Secondary Schools and accessible road network as this will reduce rural-urban transfer in FCT secondary schools.

This study investigated influence of community participation on effective administration of Junio... more This study investigated influence of community participation on effective administration of Junior Secondary Schools in Gwagwalada Area Council Abuja. The study focused on community participation in provision of funds, infrastructural facilities, maintenance of discipline and decision-making processes. Four research questions guided the study. This study used the survey research design. The population of the study was 169 while the sample was 78 respondents. Purposive random sampling technique was used to determine the sample size of 78 respondents. The instrument for data collection was self-structured questionnaire titled “Community Participation on the Administration of Secondary Schools Questionnaire” (CPASSQ)”. The instrument was trial tested on 26 respondents in two schools outside the study area. The data collected were analyzed using Cronbach Alpha to compute the reliability estimate and the overall reliability coefficient of 0.77 was obtained. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions that guided the study. The major finding of the study were that communities to a great extent participate in the effective administration of Junior Secondary Schools in Gwagwalada in the provision of funds, infrastructural facilities, maintenance of discipline and decision-making processes. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended among others that the school as a matter of fact should reciprocate by playing active roles in the community such as organizing adult educational programmes that can help to solve community problems. Finally, conclusions were made, the limitations of the study were highlighted and suggestions were made for further studies.
This study investigated the influence of developmental psychology on the academic performance of ... more This study investigated the influence of developmental psychology on the academic performance of students in selected secondary schools in Gwagwalada Area Council, Abuja. Based on the purpose of the study, four objectives were raised and used to formulate three research questions to guide the study. The correlational design was adopted in the study. The population of the study was made up of 4,563 SS II students in Gwagwalada Area Council, out of which 2001 students were drawn from four senior secondary schools in Gwagwalada Area Council. A sample size of 100 students was randomly selected from these school that serve as respondents for this study. The research instruments used to collect data was the “Students Psychological Factor Questionnaire” (SPFQ). Data collected were analyzed using simple percentage for background information of the respondents. Research questions were answered using frequency and mean scores. The findings of the study revealed that students’ anxiety in the class, phobia for particular subject, students’ hatred for subject teachers, interest in schooling were among psychological factors that affect students’ academic performance in Gwagwalada Area Council. However, the study showed that general mental ability of the students influences students’ academic performance but there is no clear indication that students’ character influence students’ academic performance in Gwagwalada Area Council, Abuja. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended among others that School guidance counsellors should encourage students to develop a positive self-concept and attitude towards learning, parents and teachers can also serve as motivators encouraging students in their academic achievement and ministry of education should motivate students by giving scholarship to students who perform well in their academics.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of the head teacher‘s supervisory role on... more The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of the head teacher‘s supervisory role on the performance of public primary school teachers in Kuje Area Council. Specifically the study sought to assess whether the head teachers’ classroom observation influenced teachers’ job performance; to determine the extent to which the head teachers’ provision of instructional resources influence teachers’ job performance; to establish whether the head teachers’ checking of teachers professional records influence teachers’ job performance and to establish the extent to which teachers’ professional development by the head teacher influence teachers’ job performance in primary school in Kuje Area Council. This study employed a descriptive survey design. Targeted population comprised of 505 respondents out of which 10 head teachers and 100 teachers were purposive and randomly selected respectively. Data was collected using two types of questionnaires which were distributed to the head teachers and the teachers respectively and an interview scheduled to the teachers. The collected data were analyzed quantitatively using frequencies and percentages for demographic information and mean and standard deviation for research questions. The study revealed that teachers’ job performance was attributed to combination of the independent factors that related to head teachers’ supervisory role (Classroom observation, provision of instructional resources, checking teachers’ professional records and teachers’ professional development). The study concluded that head teachers who consistently conduct lesson observation and held model teaching sessions with teachers, significantly influenced teacher performance and hence students’ performance. Based on the findings, researcher recommended that Universal Basic Education (UBE) and Local Education Authority (LEA) should emphasizes on the regular monitoring of professional documents by the head teachers including schemes of work, lesson plans, lesson notes and class registers and Education secretariat should reinforce supervision-based training, refresher courses, seminars and workshops for head teachers to update them on the latest practices in supervisory role.
