Through careful consideration of contemporary debates, these writers, theorists, academics and activists consider the wider place of lesbian feminisms within queer theory, post-colonial feminism, and the movement for LGBT rights. It considers how lesbian feminisms can contribute to discussions on intersectionality, engage with trans activism and the need for trans-inclusion, to ultimately show how lesbian feminisms can offer a transformative approach to today’s sexual and gender politics.

Parental mediation strategies can regulate the benefits and risks of the ICT for children, and have a significant and lifelong impact on children's self-confidence and positive attitudes toward digital technologies. This paper aims to explore how does gender, of both parents and children, affects parent mediation strategies of children's media use, adopting a critical discourse perspective in which gender differences in ICT use are understood as a result of gendertechnology and power-knowledge relations. We present a gender perspective on the results of the research 'Growing Up with Screens', conducted in Portugal which aims to explore the mediation practices of parents including the first generation of digital native parents with children aged 3 to 8 years old.

The lives of women and men, either cisgender or transgender, are deeply affected by gender inequalities. The identity-based approach to equality policies do not consider the interconnections and interdependence of diverse identity categories, and the acknowledgment that it is not possible to explain inequalities through a single framework. Sexual orientation equality policies often fail to take gender inequalities into account. Academic research has the potential to contribute to clarify the concepts underlying equality policies and to promote an intersectional approach. In terms of equality policies this means, for instance, to formulate policies that take into account groups at the different intersections of inequalities and the way that they are affected by the policies in question. This work aims to explore the contribution of the Portuguese research community to sexual orientation equality polici...

This research outlines an embodied and inclusive approach to Elementary Science Education in Teacher Education, based on the literature review, namely in what concerns Gender issues in Elementary Science Education Curricula and Sex Education Curricula, as well as on situated case studies that evidence gender inequalities in elementary schools and the challenges faced by pre-service and in-service Elementary School Teachers regarding these inequalities. The approach here proposed queers binary categorizations: i) emphasizing the integration of cognition and emotion, in an embodied approach; ii) questioning the “natural” heteronormativity and the sex/gender binaries, in a more inclusive attitude. In this work, it is argued that such science (and sex) education approaches should support the development of sexual identity, includin...

During the last decades, research has been studying the factors that can contribute to close the gender gap in what concerns participation, achievement and progression in STEM education. The empirical study presented in this paper assessed, with a gender perspective, the results of the use of electronic sensors to explore and solve environmental health problems by children of four primary school classes. The developed experiment was designed to promote gender inclusion. The results evidenced that children acquired knowledge linked to the use of the sensors, and were able to produce suggestions to solve the explored problems. Nonetheless, gender differences were not promoted by the experiment didactic activities, evidencing affordances of such activities to narrow gender gaps.

However, to be emerged in digital networked practices does not inherently provide competences to critically examine media and online content. Formal learning could profit from young people's interests and enthusiasm in informal learning contexts, bridging the gap between formal learning and everyday digital practices. The school has an urgent and decisive role to promote digital literacies and to prepare young people to adapt to a changing world. This paper presents results from the project Net Children Go Mobile in Portugal to analyze the gap between digital practices and school. The digital gap between the culture of the school and the culture of children's lives outside school is not just about having more access to technology or more ICT training, it is essentially about having the competence of using critical thinking and a diverse set of skills in digital practices.

In particular, ICT continues to be highly gendered in all socioeconomic and educational backgrounds, a source of significant social inequality in enduring ways. This paper reports on an ongoing research project entitled ‘Gender@ICT’ which explores the interrelations of gender and technologies in an educational context. Results from this research demonstrate that gendered identities of young individuals have an effect on future educational and career choices, particularly in relation to science and technology. This project aims to improve an understanding of the co-production of gender and technologies, advancing ways to promote gender equity.

Although there is a solid, diversified and mature corpus of feminist reflection in the Portuguese academia, there is a lack of institutional recognition with very few Women's, Gender and Feminist Studies formally organized in curricula or academic degrees. There have been, and still are, many resistances to a formal recognition of Women's, Gender and Feminist Studies as a scientific domain and Portugal is lagging behind in this area. The first and only scientific research centre entirely dedicated to Gender Studies was only created in 2012. The long period of dictatorship that Portugal endured for over 40 years in the past century, has had a major influence in the Portuguese society, preventing social movements, as the second wave feminism, to foster social change in the academia. The current debates at the present time in Portugal concern the widespread use of the concept of gender without an effective epistemological and methodological paradigm shift, and some researchers question the erasure of the word ‘women’ that is being almost always replaced by the word ‘gender’. In this area of study, the intersections of activism and academia in Portugal are noteworthy, and there is a positive contamination that comes through the contact with the feminist empowering movements. The Portuguese researchers’ resilience has proven to overcome the lack of support, both institutional and financial, making it possible to advance Women's, Gender and Feminist Studies. Keywords: Activism and academia, feminist studies, gender, institutional resistance, Portugal, resilience

The goal of the research reported in this paper is to study how children can participate in school environmental health, using eco-sensors and digital technologies in scientific inquiries. Eco-sensors are used by children to acquire, analyze, interpret, and communicate data, as a support to the identification of problems and to their own environmental health decisions. This paper presents two case studies, one centered on noise and one on indoor air quality, in Portuguese elementary schools. It is a qualitative research that highlights that children can participate in authentic and meaningful environmental health problem solving in schools. Problem solving is developed through scientific inquiries that include children epistemic practices, scaffolded by teacher mediation and epistemi...

Furthermore ICT use continues to be a highly gendered area of life in all socioeconomic and educational backgrounds, and a source of significant social inequality in enduring ways. Gender and ICT/technologies is an international growing field of research that explores diverse research issues, and the main objective of this paper is to characterize the Portuguese research on this topic, identifying the main areas of study and possible gaps. By analyzing institutional repositories of Higher Education in Portugal, conferences and journals on ICT and Education, this paper concludes that research on gender and ICT/technologies in Portugal is very limited and mainly on subjects related with education and occupation/jobs. To finalize the paper presents future research topics to foster knowledge on gender and ICT/technologies in Portugal.
