The power of new technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) is being felt across all industries. In healthcare, AI has the potential to improve patient outcomes and enhance efficiency. But the industry is exceptional for the protective measures that are applied to it. How can the healthcare sector strike a balance between harnessing innovation and maintaining rigorous ethical standards?
All AI systems entail challenges. AI requires massive volumes of data. But medical information is restricted to protect patient confidentiality. Using data also puts systems at risk of cybersecurity breaches. And insurance coverage decisions based on data-driven decision-making can affect who receives treatment, potentially further exacerbating inequalities of treatment and outcomes.
When AI models are trained on poor data, its outputs are at risk of “algorithmic bias”. Clinicians interacting with AI too often can lead to “automation bias” where incorrect advice is accepted. This can further result in “feedback bias” where AI learns and perpetuates the same mistakes.
Moreover, who owns medical data and should have the right to use it? How can healthcare professionals, technology companies and regulatory bodies maintain algorithmic accuracy, efficiency and integrity while ensuring patient safety? And who is responsible for medical errors made by AI?
Ethical standards in healthcare are a moral obligation and a driver of innovation, efficiency and resilience. By prioritising fairness and equal access to care, the healthcare system can achieve both ethical integrity and practical gains, creating a model that benefits all stakeholders.
